Review of Non-Classical Features of Deformation Twinning in hcp Metals and Their Description by Disconnection Mechanisms

Deformation Mechanism and Structural Changes in the Globular Ti-6Al-4V Alloy under Quasi-Static and Dynamic Compression: To the Question of the Controlling Phase in the Deformation of α+β Titanium Alloys

The deformation mechanism of the Ti-6Al-4V (wt.%) alloy with globular structure was studied under conditions of quasi-static and high-strain compression with rates 10−3 s−1 and 2.1–3.3 × 103 s−1, respectively. High-strain compression was conducted using a Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB). The details of the deformation mechanism were evaluated based on the analysis of the deformation hardening curves using the strain hardening exponent concept developed for titanium alloys in tension conditions. The used approach allowed us to identify the stages of plastic deformation observed and the controlling phase in deformation of two-phase alloy through the assessment of the strengthening index, n. It has been found that three deformation stages can be identified in quasi-static conditions. However, when the alloy is compressed at a high strain rate, the third deformation stage does not develop due to the high process rate. Further analysis of deformation curves reveals the leading role of the β-phase under the quasi-static conditions and the essential contribution of the second, α-phase, at a high compression rate. The findings on the deformation mechanism based on the analysis of hardening curves were supported by a detailed structural study.

Type III and IV deformation twins in minerals and metals

Historically, two types of twins (I and II) have been categorized for twinning in minerals and metals. When analyzed by the topological model, a crystallographic construction used to define the defect structure of interfaces, triclinic and some other low-symmetry crystals do not fall into either category and instead form two new twinning types, namely, III and IV. Aside from accurately describing twin structures, these concepts are important for understanding the deformation of minerals such as plagioclase and for deriving constitutive models for the deformation.

Type IV twins are defined and shown to exist in triclinic crystal systems, as well as in some monoclinic and trigonal systems. Here, we focus on Pericline twins in triclinic plagioclase as an example. Type IV twins are associated with the irrationality of one of the twinning elements that is rational for a type II twin. The formation of type IV twins is accomplished through the shear on a K2 plane produced by the motion of twinning disconnections on a K1 plane, followed by rotational partitioning. The same systems where type IV twins are present also have type III twins instead of type I. Without using the correct type IV analysis, one would deduce the wrong magnitude and direction of shear associated with the twinning process, the magnitude of which would increase with greater triclinicity. Types I and II twins form if and only if there are rational lattice translation vectors lying in the plane of distortion/shear. Otherwise, the twins are types III and IV.

The Plastic Deformation Mechanisms of hcp Single Crystals with Different Orientations: Molecular Dynamics Simulations

The deformation mechanisms of Mg, Zr, and Ti single crystals with different orientations are systematically studied by using molecular dynamics simulations. The affecting factors for the plasticity of hexagonal close-packed (hcp) metals are investigated. The results show that the basal <a> dislocation, prismatic <a> dislocation, and pyramidal <c + a> dislocation are activated in Mg, Zr, and Ti single crystals. The prior slip system is determined by the combined effect of the Schmid factor and the critical resolved shear stresses (CRSS). Twinning plays a crucial role during plastic deformation since basal and prismatic slips are limited. The 101¯2 twinning is popularly observed in Mg, Zr, and Ti due to its low CRSS. The 101¯1 twin appears in Mg and Ti, but not in Zr because of the high CRSS. The stress-induced hcp-fcc phase transformation occurs in Ti, which is achieved by successive glide of Shockley partial dislocations on basal planes. More types of plastic deformation mechanisms (including the cross-slip, double twins, and hcp-fcc phase transformation) are activated in Ti than in Mg and Zr. Multiple deformation mechanisms coordinate with each other, resulting in the higher strength and good ductility of Ti. The simulation results agree well with the related experimental observation.
