Thermal Stability and Lubrication Properties of Biodegradable Castor Oil on AISI 4140 Steel

Reactive Extraction for Fatty Acid Methyl Ester Production from Castor Seeds Using a Heterogeneous Base Catalyst: Process Parameter Optimization and Characterization

Fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) from oil seeds is conventionally produced via a two/three-process-step method: extraction of oil and subsequent esterification/transesterification to fatty FAME (biodiesel). However, in the present study, we investigated the production of castor kernel oil (CKO) FAME by reactive extraction for extraction and transesterification in a single process using a heterogeneous catalyst. The content of oil that can be extracted was checked by investigating several nonreactive extraction parameters such as solvent type (polar, nonpolar, and mixture), the solvent to kernel ratio, and extraction time. Maximum oil was extracted using methanol as a solvent with a methanol-to-seed ratio of 6.25:1 for 6 h extraction time. The viscosity of CKO obtained by nonreactive extraction was reduced from 288.83 to 19.04 mm²/s by reactive extraction using a 4.09 wt % catalyst concentration (BaO) and a 330.9:1 methanol-to-oil molar ratio for 6 h reaction time at 64 °C. Reactive extraction for transesterification of CKO was performed using BaO, CaO, and ZnO heterogeneous catalysts. BaO results in the increased yield of CKO FAME compared to other catalysts. Central composite design (CCD) using the response surface methodology (RSM) was implemented to design the experimental matrix, process parameter optimization, maximize the yield of CKO FAME, and investigate interaction effects of parameters such as reactive extraction temperature (55-65 °C), catalyst concentration (3-5 wt %), and methanol-to-oil molar ratio (175:1-350:1) on the yield of CKO FAME. A second-order model equation with a p-value < 0.05 and an R ² value near 1.0 was obtained to predict the yield using the input parameters. The maximum yield CKO FAME of 96.13 wt % with 94.4% purity of produced CKO FAME was obtained at a catalyst concentration of 4.09 wt % and a methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 330.9:1 for 6 h with a reaction temperature of 64 °C. Therefore, a comparable conversion of castor seed oil triglyceride (96.13 wt %) was obtained in a single step directly from castor seeds. Furthermore, the rheological behavior investigation of castor kernel oil and castor methyl ester revealed that the dynamic viscosity of both samples was found to be dependent on triglyceride content and temperature.

On the Tribological and Oxidation Study of Xanthophylls as Natural Additives in Castor Oil for Green Lubrication

The present study focuses on an introductory analysis of the use of three xanthophylls as additives for green lubricant applications. For this purpose, the additives were characterized by FTIR and ¹H-NMR techniques, and the bio-lubricants were described by their physical properties. The effect of the natural compounds on the friction and wear properties of bio-lubricants were evaluated by sliding friction tests under boundary conditions, as confirmed by an analysis of the lubricating film thickness. The antioxidant capacity was analyzed by FTIR spectroscopy. It was observed better wear protection in castor oil with xanthophylls than without these additives. The wear rate was reduced up to 50% compared with neat oil. Lesser beneficial effects were appreciated in friction coefficient since it was increased 25%. The best contribution was observed with astaxanthin as an additive. In addition, a significant improvement in the oxidation of castor oil, complemented with this additive, was exhibited by FTIR analysis. It was found that xanthophylls could be employed as additives for totally biodegradable lubricant applications since they have better tribological and antioxidant behavior than current additives.

On the Influence of Tribological Properties of AISI 4140 Annealed Steel against Ceramic Counterparts under Dry and Lubricated Conditions and Their Effect on Steel Microstructure

AISI 4140 steel is still one of the most distinguished steels employed in tribological applications because of its low cost, great mechanical properties, and appropriate wear resistance. In this contribution, the tribological performance of AISI 4140 annealed steel against engineering ceramic was analyzed to promote parameters for the application of this steel, especially in systems that are subjected to contact pressures between 490–1240 MPa. Dry and lubricated pin-on-disk experiments were completed at different normal loads. The worn surfaces were analyzed by contact profilometry, optical and scanning electron microscopies, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and microhardness examinations. In dry conditions, a better friction response was found on the steel tested with ZrO2. Friction coefficient and wear rate resulted in reductions up to 60% and 99% compared with those obtained with Al2O3 and Si3N4 counterparts. A strain-hardening phenomenon due to the friction process was observed on the samples tested with ZrO2 and Si3N4, which showed grain refinement and hardness increment on worn surfaces. Therefore, those systems exhibited better wear responses. In lubricated conditions, all counterparts exhibited low friction and wear, but the performance of Al2O3 and Si3N4 was highlighted. The results demonstrate that the performance of AISI 4140 annealed steel under the tested conditions is comparable with that of the same steel with other surface treatments.

Improvement Effect of Green Lubricants on the Tribological and Mechanical Performance of 4140 Steel

Although much has been learned and investigated about environmentally friendly lubricants in recent years, several issues remain critical to their use in specific applications. A key point that could be limiting their utilization is that the effect of green lubricants on the tribological and mechanical properties of the elements has not been thoroughly studied since such attributes determine their performance in industrial applications. For this reason, in this research, the effect of green lubrication on the tribological and hardness properties of AISI 4140 steel was studied. The performance of three bio-based lubricants was studied and compared to that of five of the most representative lubricants. First, the lubricants were chemically and physically characterized. Then, the effect of each lubricant on the friction and wear behavior of the system was analyzed by kinetic friction coefficient, wear rate calculations, and microhardness measurements. In general, the bio-based lubricants exhibited the lowest values of friction and wear. Further the mechanical properties of the systems lubricated by these lubricants were not affected or were affected to a lesser degree.

Enhanced Ricinoleic Acid Preparation Using Lipozyme TLIM as a Novel Biocatalyst: Optimized by Response Surface Methodology

Ricinoleic acid (RA) is an important raw material for plasticizers, emulsifiers, and nanomaterials. In this work, a green and efficient method was developed for RA production. Results showed that Lipozyme TLIM can be used as a novel biocatalyst to catalyze the hydrolysis of castor oil (CO) for RA preparation. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to evaluate and optimize the effects of reaction variables on the hydrolysis of CO. Reaction conditions were optimized as follows: 41.3 °C, enzyme load 8.9%, 39.2 h, and 40:1 molar ratio of water to oil. Under these optimized reaction variables, the maximum hydrolysis ratio of CO (96.2 ± 1.5%) was obtained. The effect of hydrolysis variables on the reaction was as follows: enzyme load > hydrolysis time > temperature. In conclusion, this is a green, simple, and efficient method for RA preparation and can provide a good alternative method for RA industrial production.
