Abstract
This paper presents a comprehensive review of mechanical design and synthesis methods for piezo-actuated compliant micro-positioning stages, which play an important role in areas where high precision motion is required, including bio-robotics, precision manufacturing, automation, and aerospace. Unlike conventional rigid-link mechanisms, the motion of compliant mechanisms is realized by using flexible elements, whereby deformation requires no lubrication while achieving high movement accuracy without friction. As compliant mechanisms differ significantly from traditional rigid mechanisms, recent research has focused on investigating various technologies and approaches to address challenges in the flexure-based micro-positioning stage in the aspects of synthesis, analysis, material, fabrication, and actuation. In this paper, we reviewed the main concepts and key advances in the mechanical design of compliant piezo-actuated micro-positioning stages, with a particular focus on flexure design, kineto-static modeling, actuators, material selection, and functional mechanisms including amplification and self-guiding ones. We also identified the key issues and directions for the development trends of compliant micro-positioning stages.

Abstract
Hair regenerative medicine must involve practical procedures, such as cryopreservation of tissue grafts. This can aid in evaluating tissue safety and quality, as well as transportation to a clinic and multiple transplants. Hair follicle germs (HFGs), identified during in vivo development, are considered effective tissue grafts for hair regenerative medicine. However, to the best of our knowledge, methods for cryopreserving HFGs have not been explored yet. This study investigated the efficacy of slow vitrification methods for freezing HFGs. Cryoprotectants such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and carboxylated poly-l-lysine were used for vitrification. The results indicate that DMSO vitrification yielded the most efficient de novo hair regeneration in mouse skin, comparable to that of non-cryoprotected HFGs. A microfinger was fabricated to scale up the cryopreservation method, considering that thousands of tissue grafts were required per patient in clinical practice. The microfinger can be used for a series of processes, holding the HFG, replacing it with a cryopreservation solution, freezing it in liquid nitrogen, thawing it in a warm medium, and transplanting it into the skin. Although de novo hair regeneration by HFGs cryopreserved using microfingers was reduced by approximately 20 % compared to those cryopreserved using flat plates for fertilized eggs, it exceeded 50 %. These findings demonstrate that vitrification with DMSO and microfingers could be a useful approach for the cryopreservation of tissue grafts in hair regenerative medicine for hair loss.

Abstract
Controlling the phase-separated structure of polymer alloys is a promising method for tailoring the properties of polymers. However, controlling the morphology of phase-separated structures is challenging. Recently, phase-separated structures have been fabricated via 3D printing; however, only a few methods that enable on-demand control of phase separation have been reported. In this study, laser-scanning stereolithography, a vat photopolymerization method, is used to form a phase-separated structure via polymerization-induced microphase separation by varying the scanning speed and using macro-reversible addition/fragmentation chain transfer (macro-RAFT) agents with different average molar masses, along with multiarmed macro-RAFT agents; such structures were used to fabricate 3D-printed parts. Various phase-separated morphologies including sea-island and reverse sea-island were achieved by controlling the laser scanning speed and RAFT type. Heterogeneous structures with different material properties were also achieved by simply changing the laser scanning speed. As the deformation due to shrinkage in the process of cleaning 3D-printed parts depends on the laser scanning speed, shape correction was introduced to suppress the effect of shrinkage and obtain the desired shape.

Abstract
This work offers a new alternative tool for atherectomy operations, with the purpose of minimizing the risks for the patients and maximizing the number of clinical cases for which the system can be used, thanks to the possibility of scaling its size down to lumen reduced to a few tenths of mm. The development of this microsystem has presented a certain theoretical work during the kinematic synthesis and the design stages. In the first stage a new multi-loop mechanism with a Stephenson’s kinematic chain (KC) was found and then adopted as the so-called pseudo-rigid body mechanism (PRBM). Analytical modeling was necessary to verify the synthesis requirements. In the second stage, the joint replacement method was applied to the PRBM to obtain a corresponding and equivalent compliant mechanism with lumped compliance. The latter presents two loops and six elastic joints and so the evaluation of the microsystem mechanical advantage (MA) had to be calculated by taking into account the accumulation of elastic energy in the elastic joints. Hence, a new closed form expression of the microsystem MA was found with a method that presents some new aspects in the approach. The results obtained with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) were compared to those obtained with the analytical model. Finally, it is worth noting that a microsystem prototype can be fabricated by using MEMS Technology classical methods, while the microsystem packaging could be a further development for the present investigation.

Abstract
Compliant mechanisms are popular to the applications of micro/nanoscale manipulations. This paper proposes a novel triaxial parallel-kinematic compliant manipulator inspired by the Tripteron mechanism. Compared to most conventional triaxial compliant mechanisms, the proposed manipulator has the merits of structure compactness and being free of assembly error due to its unique configuration and the utilize of 3D printing technology. The compliance matrix modeling method is employed to determine the input stiffness of the compliant manipulator, and it is verified by finite-element analysis (FEA). Results show that the deviations between simulation works and the derived analytical models are in an acceptable range. The simulation results also reveal that the compliant manipulator can achieve a 16 μm × 16 μm × 16 μm cubic workspace. In this motion range, the observed maximum stress is much lower than the yield strength of the material. Moreover, the dynamic characteristics of the manipulator are investigated via the simulations as well.

Abstract
Compared to cell suspensions or monolayers, 3D cell aggregates provide cellular interactions organized in space and heterogeneity that better resume the real organization of native tissues. They represent powerful tools to narrow down the gap between in vitro and in vivo models, thanks to their self-evolving capabilities. Recent strategies have demonstrated their potential as building blocks to generate microtissues. Developing specific methodologies capable of organizing these cell aggregates into 3D architectures and environments has become essential to convert them into functional microtissues adapted for regenerative medicine or pharmaceutical screening purposes. Although the techniques for producing individual cell aggregates have been on the market for over a decade, the methodology for engineering functional tissues starting from them is still a young and quickly evolving field of research. In this review, we first present a panorama of emerging cell aggregates microfabrication and assembly technologies. We further discuss the perspectives opened in the establishment of functional tissues with a specific focus on controlled architecture and heterogeneity to favor cell differentiation and proliferation.

Abstract
Compliant mechanisms’ design aims to create a larger workspace and simple structural shapes because these mechanical systems usually have small dimensions, reduced friction, and less bending. From that request, we designed optimal bridge-type compliant mechanism flexure hinges with a high magnification ratio, low stress by using a flexure joint, and especially no friction and no bending. This joint was designed with optimal dimensions for the studied mechanism by using the method of grey relational analysis (GRA), which is based on the Taguchi method (TM), and finite element analysis (FEA). Grey relational grade (GRG) has been estimated by an artificial neural network (ANN). The optimal values were in good agreement with the predicted value of the Taguchi method and regression analysis. The finite element analysis, signal-to-noise analysis, surface plot, and analysis of variance demonstrated that the design dimensions significantly affected the equivalent stress and displacement. The optimal values of displacement were also verified by the experiment. The outcomes were in good agreement with a deviation lower than 6%. Specifically, the displacement amplification ratio was obtained as 65.36 times compared with initial design.
