Assessment of the Bulgarian Wastewater Treatment Plants' Impact on the Receiving Water Bodies

On inorganic tracers of wastewater treatment plant discharges along the Marque River (Northern France)

Increase of water quality in aquatic systems has become a hot button issue in recent decades. However, with the aim to implement an effective remediation strategy, the first step is to identify the sources of diffuse and point-source pollution using several tracers. In urban areas, B isotopes, Gd enrichment, Cl^- or carbamazepine concentrations can be used as wastewater treatment plant tracers. In this study, a focus was made on the quantification of a wide variety of inorganic compounds (elements, ions, isotopic ratios) all along the Marque River, a small stream located in Northern France receiving effluents coming from seven wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The objectives were (i) to determine the importance of the WWTPs discharge during low water events, (ii) to assess the efficiency of conventional tracers in quantifying the contribution of the WWTPs and (iii) to investigate new potential tracers less commonly used. The results have shown, through statistical analyses ANOVA (Analysis Of Variance) tests, PCA (Principal Component Analysis) and contribution calculations, that the WWTPs discharges strongly impact the water composition of all the watercourse and particularly during the first 6 km. However, due to high discharges of wastewaters not always well treated, some classical indicators (e.g. B, Rb/Sr) have shown limitations when used alone. The use of a set of relevant tracers including alkali metals could therefore be one solution for overcoming such a problem. Finally, other indicators like Rb/B or Gd/Pt ratios may also be a way to tackle this issue; they are indeed promising to discriminate the source of wastewaters.

Chemometric Evaluation of WWTPs’ Wastewaters and Receiving Surface Waters in Bulgaria

Wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) installations are designed and operated to reduce the quantity of pollutants emitted to surface waters receiving treated wastewaters. In this work, we used classical instrumental studies (to determine chemicals and parameters under obligations put with Directive 91/271/EEC), ecotoxicological tools (Sinapis alba root growth inhibition (SA-RG) and Heterocypris incongruens mortality (MORT) and growth inhibition (GRINH)) and multivariate statistical analysis to gain information on feature profiles of WWTPs’ effluents and the possible burden of surface water bodies receiving treated wastewaters in eleven locations of Bulgaria. Initial screening of results has shown that only phosphorus content exceeds the admissible level in 5 out 11 WWTP effluents, while As, Cr, Cu, Mn, and Zn show exceedance at several locations. The multivariate statistical analysis reveals the discriminating water quality parameters and outlines the ability of Heterocypris incongruens to evaluate the ecotoxicological potential of different groups of waters.

Modelling Freshwater Eutrophication with Limited Limnological Data Using Artificial Neural Networks

Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have wide applications in aquatic ecology and specifically in modelling water quality and biotic responses to environmental predictors. However, data scarcity is a common problem that raises the need to optimize modelling approaches to overcome data limitations. With this paper, we investigate the optimal k-fold cross validation in building an ANN using a small water-quality data set. The ANN was created to model the chlorophyll-a levels of a shallow eutrophic lake (Mikri Prespa) located in N. Greece. The typical water quality parameters serving as the ANN’s inputs are pH, dissolved oxygen, water temperature, phosphorus, nitrogen, electric conductivity, and Secchi disk depth. The available data set was small, containing only 89 data samples. For that reason, k-fold cross validation was used for training the ANN. To find the optimal k value for the k-fold cross validation, several values of k were tested (ranging from 3 to 30). Additionally, the leave-one-out (LOO) cross validation, which is an extreme case of the k-fold cross validation, was also applied. The ANN’s performance indices showed a clear trend to be improved as the k number was increased, while the best results were calculated for the LOO cross validation as expected. The computational times were calculated for each k value, where it was found the computational time is relatively low when applying the more expensive LOO cross validation; therefore, the LOO is recommended. Finally, a sensitivity analysis was examined using the ANN to investigate the interactions of the input parameters with the Chlorophyll-a, and hence examining the potential use of the ANN as a water management tool for nutrient control.

Assessment of Advanced Oxidation Processes Using Zebrafish in a Non-Forced Exposure System: A Proof of Concept

Water bodies and aquatic ecosystems are threatened by discharges of industrial waters. Ecotoxicological effects of components occurring in untreated and treated wastewaters are often not considered. The use of a linear, multi-compartmented, non-forced, static system constructed with PET bottles is proposed for the quality assessment of treated waters, to deal with such limitations. Two synthetic waters, one simulating wastewater from the textile industry and the other one simulating wastewater from the cassava starch industry, were prepared and treated by homogeneous Fenton process and heterogeneous photocatalysis, respectively. Untreated and treated synthetic waters and their dilutions were placed into compartments of the non-forced exposure system, in which zebrafish (Danio rerio), the indicator organism, could select the environment of its preference. Basic physical–chemical and chemical parameters of untreated and treated synthetic waters were measured. The preference and avoidance responses allowed verification of whether or not the quality of the water was improved due to the treatment. The results of these assays can be a complement to conventional parameters of water quality.

Chemometric Assessment of Bulgarian Wastewater Treatment Plants' Effluents

Surface water quality strongly depends on anthropogenic activity. Among the main anthropogenic sources of this activity are the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents. The discharged loads of nutrients and suspended solids could provoke serious problems for receiving water bodies and significantly alter the surface water quality. This study presents inventory analysis and chemometric assessment of WWTP effluents based on the mandatory monitoring data. The comparison between the Bulgarian WWTPs and previously reported data from other countries reveals that discharged loads from investigated WWTPs are lower. This is particularly valid for total suspended solids (TSS). The low TSS loads are the reason for the deviations of the typical calculated WWTP effluent ratios of Bulgarian WWTPs compared to the WWTPs worldwide. The performed multivariate analysis reveals the hidden factors that determine the content of WWTP effluents. The source apportioning based on multivariate curve resolution analysis provides detailed information for source contribution profiles of the investigated WWTP effluent loads and elucidate the difference between WWTPs included in this study.

Evaluation of Fecal Coliform Prevalence and Physicochemical Indicators in the Effluent from a Wastewater Treatment Plant in the North-West Province, South Africa

Compliance of the effluents from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) to the regulatory standards, which mostly entail the removal/reduction of organic waste and deactivation of the potential microbial pathogens is of great importance. The detection of indicator parameters can be used to determine the effectiveness of a WWTP and the level of compliance with the South African regulatory standards. The performance of the WWTP was assessed by biological, physical and chemical measures in wastewater final effluent. The Escherichia coli ranged from 0 and 2420 count/100 mL in the final effluent. The recorded values for the physicochemical parameters were within the following ranges: pH (7.03-8.49), electrical conductivity (81.63-126.5 mS/m), suspended solids (0.40-20.4 mg/L), ammonia (0-22.15 mg/L), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) (1-73 mg/L), nitrate (0-16.1 mg/L), ortho-phosphate (0-8.58 mg/L) and free chlorine (0-3.21 mg/L). Furthermore, the concentration of toxic heavy metals was recorded to be between 1-10 ug/L for arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury. In conclusion, all the parameters that were evaluated in this study indicate that the studied WWTP is performing in accordance with the prescribed general limits.

Changes in Water and Sewage Management after Communism: example of the Oder River Basin (Central Europe)

This paper presents changes in water and sewage management in the cross-border Oder River basin in the period since the post-communist political and economic system transformation, including the period after Poland’s accession to the European Union. The Oder River basin, with an area of 124,000 km², is the second largest basin in the Baltic Sea Basin, and therefore requires particular protection. It was emphasised that in the years 1989–2017, water withdrawal for production purposes considerably decreased (by 42%), as well as water withdrawal for exploitation of the water supply system (by 33%). The amount of sewage discharged to rivers was also reduced (by approximately 50%), and treatment technologies considerably improved. Changes in water and sewage management were presented in spatial form, i.e. by hydrographic regions of the Oder River basin. Particular attention was paid to changes in sewage management in cities. They involved among others the liquidation of mechanical treatment plants and a considerable increase in the number of cities with treatment plants with increased nutrient removal. The analysis of the effect of the changes in water and sewage management on the quality of the Oder River and Baltic Sea was also performed, and the rate of decrease in loads of contaminants most harmful to water ecosystems was determined. The role of European Union funds and national funds in the implementation of investments in the scope of water management was emphasised. Finally, attention was drawn to the need to intensify works for protecting waters in agricultural areas, which currently constitute the primary threat to their quality. Several top-priority tasks were also specified that should be implemented in the near future for the purpose of obtaining a good ecological state of waters in the Oder River basin pursuant to the Water Framework Directive.
