Charge Displacement Analysis-A Tool to Theoretically Characterize the Charge Transfer Contribution of Halogen Bonds

Monomeric gold hydrides for carbon dioxide reduction: ligand effect on the reactivity

We analyzed the ligand electronic effect in the reaction between a [LAu(I)H]0/- hydride species and CO2, leading to a coordinated formate [LAu(HCOO)]0/-. We explored 20 different ligands, such as carbenes, phosphines and others, carefully selected to cover a wide range of electron-donor and -acceptor properties. We included in the study the only ligand, an NHC-coordinated diphosphene, that, thus far, experimentally demonstrated facile and reversible reaction between the monomeric gold(I) hydride and carbon dioxide. We elucidated the previously unknown reaction mechanism, which resulted to be concerted and common to all the ligands: the gold-hydrogen bond attacks the carbon atom of CO2 with one oxygen atom coordinating to the gold center. A correlation between the ligand σ donor ability, which affects the electron density at the reactive site, and the kinetic activation barriers of the reaction has been found. This systematic study offers useful guidelines for the rational design of new ligands for this reaction, while suggesting a few promising and experimentally accessible potential candidates for the stoichiometric or catalytic CO2 activation.

A Structural Approach to the Strength Evaluation of Linear Chalcogen Bonds

The experimental structural features of chalcogen bonding (ChB) interactions in over 34,000 linear fragments R–Ch⋯A (Ch = S, Se, Te; R = C, N, O, S, Se, Te; A = N, O, S, Se, Te, F, Cl, Br, I) were analyzed. The bond distances dR–Ch and the interaction distances dCh⋯A were investigated, and the functions δR–Ch and δCh⋯A were introduced to compare the structural data of R–Ch⋯A fragments involving different Ch atoms. The functions δR−Ch and δCh⋯A were calculated by normalizing the differences between the relevant bond dR–Ch and ChB interaction dCh⋯A distances with respect to the sum of the relevant covalent (rcovR + rcovCh) and the van der Waals (vdW) radii (rvdWCh + rvdWA), respectively. A systematic comparison is presented, highlighting the role of the chalcogen involved, the role of the R atoms covalently bonded to the Ch, and the role of the A species playing the role of chalcogen bond acceptor. Based on the results obtained, an innovative approach is proposed for the evaluation and categorization of the ChB strength based on structural data.

Solid-State 19F NMR Chemical Shift in Square-Planar Nickel-Fluoride Complexes Linked by Halogen Bonds

The halogen bond (XB) is a highly directional class of noncovalent interactions widely explored by experimental and computational studies. However, the NMR signature of the XB has attracted limited attention. The prediction and analysis of the solid-state NMR (SSNMR) chemical shift tensor provide useful strategies to better understand XB interactions. In this work, we employ a computational protocol for modeling and analyzing the ¹⁹F SSNMR chemical shifts previously measured in a family of square-planar trans Ni^II-L₂-iodoaryl-fluoride (L = PEt₃) complexes capable of forming self-complementary networks held by a NiF···I(C) halogen bond [Thangavadivale, V.; Chem. Sci. 2018, 9, 3767-3781]. To understand how the ¹⁹F NMR resonances of the nickel-bonded fluoride are affected by the XB, we investigate the origin of the shielding in trans-[NiF(2,3,5,6-C₆F₄I)(PEt₃)₂], trans-[NiF(2,3,4,5-C₆F₄I)(PEt₃)₂], and trans-[NiF(C₆F₅)(PEt₃)₂] in the solid state, where a XB is present in the two former systems but not in the last. We perform the ¹⁹F NMR chemical shift calculations both in periodic and molecular models. The results show that the crystal packing has little influence on the NMR signatures of the XB, and the NMR can be modeled successfully with a pair of molecules interacting via the XB. Thus, the observed difference in chemical shift between solid-state and solution NMR can be essentially attributed to the XB interaction. The very high shielding of the fluoride and its driving contributor, the most shielded component of the chemical shift tensor, are well reproduced at the 2c-ZORA level. Analysis of the factors controlling the shielding shows how the highest occupied Ni/F orbitals shield the fluoride in the directions perpendicular to the Ni-F bond and specifically perpendicular to the coordination plane. This shielding arises from the magnetic coupling of the Ni(3d)/F(2p lone pair) orbitals with the vacant σ_Ni-F^* orbital, thereby rationalizing the very highly upfield (shielded) resonance of the component (δ₃₃) along this direction. We show that these features are characteristic of square-planar nickel-fluoride complexes. The deshielding of the fluoride in the halogen-bonded systems is attributed to an increase in the energy gap between the occupied and vacant orbitals that are mostly responsible for the paramagnetic terms, notably along the most shielded direction.

Yet another perspective on hole interactions, part II: lp-hole vs. lp-hole interactions

Most of the experimental and theoretical work in hole interactions (HIs) is mainly focused on exploiting the nature and characteristics of σ and π-holes. In this perspective, we focus our attention on understanding the origin and properties of lone-pair holes. These holes are present on an atom opposite to its lone-pair region. Utilizing some new and old examples, such as X₃N/P⋯F^- (X = F/Cl/Br/I), F-Cl/Br/I⋯H₃P⋯NCH and H₃B-NBr₃ along with other molecular systems, we explored to what extent these lp-holes participate in lp-hole interactions, if they participate at all.

A Comprehensive Analysis of the Metal-Nitrile Bonding in an Organo-Diiron System

Nitriles (N≡CR) are ubiquitous in coordination chemistry, yet literature studies on metal-nitrile bonding based on a multi-technique approach are rare. We selected an easily-available di-organoiron framework, containing both π-acceptor (CO, aminocarbyne) and donor (Cp = η⁵-C₅H₅) ligands, as a suitable system to provide a comprehensive description of the iron-nitrile bond. Thus, the new nitrile (2-12)CF₃SO₃ and the related imine/amine complexes (8-9)CF₃SO₃ were synthesized in 58-83% yields from the respective tris-carbonyl precursors (1a-d)CF₃SO₃, using the TMNO strategy (TMNO = trimethylamine-N-oxide). The products were fully characterized by elemental analysis, IR (solution and solid state) and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy. In addition, the structures of (2)CF₃SO₃, (3)CF₃SO₃, (5)CF₃SO₃ and (11)CF₃SO₃ were ascertained by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Salient spectroscopic data of the nitrile complexes are coherent with the scale of electron-donor power of the R substituents; otherwise, this scale does not match the degree of Fe → N π-back-donation and the Fe-N bond energies, which were elucidated in (2-7)CF₃SO₃ by DFT calculations.

Metal-Involving Chalcogen Bond. The Case of Platinum(II) Interaction with Se/Te-Based σ-Hole Donors

Platinum(II) complexes exhibiting an expressed d_z²-nucleophilicity of the positively charged metal centers, namely, [Pt(ppy)(acac)] (1; acacH is acetylacetone; ppyH is 2-Ph-pyridine) and [Pt(ppy)(tmhd)] (2; tmhdH is 2,2,6,6-tetramethylheptanedione-3,5), were cocrystallized with the chalcogen bond donors (4-NC₅F₄)₂Ch (Ch = Se, Te) to form two isostructural cocrystals 1·¹/₂(4-NC₅F₄)₂Ch, and 2·²/₃(4-NC₅F₄)₂Se and 2·(4-NC₅F₄)₂Te. The X-ray data for these cocrystals and appropriate theoretical DFT calculations (PBE0-D3BJ) allowed the recognition of the metal-involving chalcogen bond, namely, Ch···d_z²-Pt^II (its energy spans from -7 to -12 kcal/mol). In 1·¹/₂(4-NC₅F₄)₂Ch, Ch···d_z²-Pt^II bonding is accompanied by the C···d_z²-Pt^II interaction, representing a three-center bifurcate, whereas in 2·(4-NC₅F₄)₂Te the chalcogen bond Te···d_z²-Pt^II is purely two-centered and is stronger than that in 1·¹/₂(4-NC₅F₄)₂Ch because of more efficient orbital overlap. The association of 2 with (4-NC₅F₄)₂Te and the structure of the formed adduct in CDCl₃ solutions was studied by using ¹H, ¹³C, ¹⁹F, ¹⁹⁵Pt, ¹²⁵Te NMR, ¹⁹F-¹H HOESY, and diffusion NMR methods. The ¹⁹⁵Pt and ¹²⁵Te NMR titration and the isothermal titration calorimetry results revealed a 1:1 association of 2 with (4-NC₅F₄)₂Te.

Yet another perspective on hole interactions

Hole interactions are known by different names depending on the key atom of the bond (halogen bond, chalcogen bond, hydrogen bond, etc.), and the geometry of the interaction (σ if in line, π if perpendicular to the Lewis acid plane). However, its origin starts with the creation of a Lewis acid by an underlying covalent bond, which forms an electrostatic depletion and a virtual antibonding orbital, which can create non-covalent interactions with Lewis bases. In this (maybe subjective) perspective, we will claim that hole interactions must be defined via the molecular orbital origin of the molecule. Under this premise we can better explore the richness of such bonding patterns. For that, we will study old, recent and new systems, trying to pinpoint some misinterpretations that are often associated with them. We will use as exemplars the triel bonds, a couple of metal complexes, a discussion on convergent σ-holes, and many cases of anti-electrostatic hole interactions.

Chalcogen vs Halogen Bonding Catalysis in a Water-Bridge-Cocatalyzed Nitro-Michael Reaction

Recently, a tellurium-based chalcogen-bond-catalyzed nitro-Michael reaction was reported ( Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2019, 58, 16923), taking advantage of the strong Lewis acidity of the catalyst. This species was found to be more effective than an analogous iodine-based halogen bond organocatalyst. Herein, we present a detailed mechanistic and kinetic analysis of these catalytic cycles including the influence of the solvent (and the performance of different intrinsic solvation models). While the chalcogen bonding interaction is fundamental to activate the C-C bond formation, we found that the presence of a two-water molecular bridge is critical to allow the following, otherwise high-energy proton transfer step. Even though the iodine-based halogen bonding interaction is stronger than the tellurium-based chalcogen bonding one, which makes the former a stronger Lewis acid and hence in principle a more efficient catalyst, solvation effects explain the smaller energy span of the latter.

Assessing the Orbital Contribution in the "Spodium Bond" by Natural Orbital for Chemical Valence-Charge Displacement Analysis

The term "spodium bond" (SpB) has been recently proposed to describe the noncoordinative interaction that can be established between a polarized group 12 metal and a mild Lewis base (LB). Most of the systems showing short metal-donor distances compatible with SpB are characterized by the coexistence of multiple weak interactions, including hydrogen and halogen bonding, making the assessment of real importance of SpB difficult. Here, we show that the relative importance of each contribution can be probed by dissecting the orbital component of the interaction through the extended transition state-natural orbital for chemical valence-charge displacement analysis (ETS-NOCV-CD). The latter gives useful information about relative energies and electrons involved, for model systems ([(thiourea)₂MX₂]···LB; M = Zn, Cd, and Hg; X = Cl and I; and LB = CH₂S, CH₂O, CH₃CN, and CO) and a variety of structures extracted from experimentally characterized adducts, allowing us to demonstrate the lack of a direct correlation between a favorable metal-base distance and the presence of an orbital contribution for the SpB.

Disentanglement of orthogonal hydrogen and halogen bonds via natural orbital for chemical valence: A charge displacement analysis

As known, the electron density of covalently bound halogen atoms is anisotropically distributed, making them potentially able to establish many weak interactions, acting at the same time as halogen bond donors and hydrogen bond acceptors. Indeed, there are many examples in which the halogen and hydrogen bond coexist in the same structure and, if a correct bond analysis is required, their separation is mandatory. Here, the advantages and limitations of coupling the charge displacement analysis with natural orbital for chemical valence method (NOCV-CD) to separately analyze orthogonal weak interactions are shown, for both symmetric and asymmetric adducts. The methodology gives optimal results with intermolecular adducts but, in the presence of an organometallic complex, also intramolecular interactions can be correctly analyzed. Beyond the methodological aspects, it is shown that correctly separate and quantify the interactions can give interesting chemical insights about the systems.
