High-Valent NiIII and NiIV Species Relevant to C-C and C-Heteroatom Cross-Coupling Reactions: State of the Art

High-Valent Nickel Complexes Supported by a Functionalized PC(sp3)P Pincer Ligand: Properties and Catalysis

This article presents the synthesis and characterization of a series of robust high-valent organometallic nickel (Ni) complexes stabilized by a functionalized PC(sp3)P pincer ligand. Notably, the nickel center, covalently confined within the 3D ligand framework, demonstrates predictable coordination and redox behavior, coupled with remarkable stability across oxidation states +2, +3, and +4. These states were found to interconvert via one-electron transfer reactions. Among these complexes, the Ni(III)-PC(sp3)P species was identified as an efficient catalyst for the mild and selective hydrosilylation of alkenes, operating through a nonoxidative reaction mechanism.

Oxidative Coupling of Guanidines and Isocyanides Catalyzed by Nickel(II): Access to Imidazoline Derivatives with Antibacterial Activity

A novel and concise approach to rare 2,3,5-triamino-imidazole scaffolds via Ni-catalyzed coupling of alkylisocyanides and N,N'-diarylguanidines has been developed. This reaction features include mild conditions (thermal or visible light activation), a wide substrate scope, and high efficiency. The coupling proceeds through a NiII/NiIV catalytic cycle, involving two-electron aerobic oxidation and the sequential insertion of two isocyanide units into Ni-N bonds.Testing these compounds against pathogens of the ESKAPE panel showed their high activity with a minimum inhibitory concentration down to 0.38 μg/mL.

Nickel-catalyzed reductive arylalkylation of alkenes: 5-exo cyclization vs. 6-endo cyclization vs. 1,2-aryl migration to 6-endo product

The detailed mechanisms of Ni-catalyzed reductive arylalkylation of unactivated alkenes with aryl bromides to synthesize benzene-fused 5-exo and 6-endo cyclic compounds were systematically investigated by DFT calculations. Our finding reveals that, under the catalysis of a Ni/biOx system with Zn as a reductant, bromobenzene containing a terminal olefin unit preferentially undergoes traditional Heck cyclization and cross-coupling reactions, favoring the formation of 5-exo cyclization products. In contrast, when Zn is absent, NiIII-alkyl species play a pivotal role, facilitating a rare 1,2-aryl migration followed by H-atom abstration, which selectively yields 6-endo cyclization products.

Advances in accessing rare oxidation states of nickel for catalytic innovation

Nickel catalysis has experienced a renaissance over the past two decades, driven by its ability to access diverse oxidation states (0 to +4) and unique reactivity. This review consolidates the advancements in nickel chemistry, providing an overview of ligands that stabilize specific nickel oxidation states. The stability, reactivity, and catalytic applications of Ni0 sources, including in situ generation from air- and moisture-stable NiII precursors, are discussed, along with the roles of NiI and NiIII intermediates in catalytic cycles. The progress in synthesizing and utilizing NiIV complexes highlights their emerging importance in catalysis. Advances in spectroscopic and theoretical tools have enhanced the understanding of nickel's complex catalytic behavior.

Synthesis, Structure, and Redox Reactivity of Ni Complexes Bearing a Redox and Acid-Base Non-innocent Ligand with NiII, NiIII, and NiIV Formal Oxidation States

A series of Ni complexes bearing a redox and acid-base noninnocent tetraamido macrocyclic ligand, H4-(TAML-4) {H4-(TAML-4) = 15,15-dimethyl-5,8,13,17-tetrahydro-5,8,13,17-tetraaza-dibenzo[a,g]cyclotridecene-6,7,14,16-tetraone}, with formal oxidation states of NiII, NiIII, and NiIV were synthesized and characterized structurally and spectroscopically. The X-ray crystallographic analysis of the Ni complexes revealed a square planar geometry, and the [Ni(TAML-4)] complex with the formal oxidation state of NiIV was characterized to be [NiIII(TAML-4•+)] with the oxidation state of the NiIII ion and the one-electron oxidized TAML-4 ligand, TAML-4•+. The NiIII oxidation state and the TAML-4 radical cation ligand, TAML-4•+, were supported by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. The reversible interconversions between [NiII(TAML-4)]2- and [NiIII(TAML-4)]- and between [NiIII(TAML-4)]- and [NiIII(TAML-4•+)] were demonstrated in spectroelectrochemical measurements as well as in chemical oxidation and reduction reactions. The reactivities of [NiIII(TAML-4)]- and [NiIII(TAML-4•+)] were then investigated in hydride transfer reactions using NADH analogs. Hydride transfer from 9,10-dihydro-10-methylacridine (AcrH2) to [NiIII(TAML-4•+)] was found to proceed via electron transfer (ET) from AcrH2 to [NiIII(TAML-4•+)] with no deuterium kinetic isotope effect (kH/kD = 1.0(2)). In contrast, hydride transfer from AcrH2 to [NiIII(TAML-4)]- proceeded much more slowly via a concerted proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) process with kH/kD = 7.0(5). In the latter reaction, an electron and a proton were transferred to the NiIII center and the TAML-4 ligand, respectively. The mechanisms of the ET by [NiIII(TAML-4•+)] and the concerted PCET by [NiIII(TAML-4)]- were ascribed to the different redox potentials of the Ni complexes.

Altering the Localization of an Unpaired Spin in a Formal Ni(V) Species

The participation of both ligand and the metal center in the redox events has been recognized as one of the ways to attain the formal high valent complexes for the late 3d metals, such as Ni and Cu. Such an approach has been employed successfully to stabilize a Ni(III) bisphenoxyl diradical species in which there exist an equilibrium between the ligand and the Ni localized resultant spin. The present work, however, broadens the scope of the previously reported three oxidized equivalent species by conveying the approaches that tend to affect the reported equilibrium in CH3 CN at 233 K. Various spectroscopic characterization revealed that employing exogenous N-donor ligands like 1-methyl imidazole and pyridine favors the formation of the Ni centered localized spin though axial binding. In contrast, due to its steric hinderance, quinoline favors an exclusive ligand localized radical species. DFT studies shed light on the novel intermediates' complex electronic structure. Further, the three oxidized equivalent species with the Ni centered spin was examined for its hydrogen atom abstraction ability stressing their key role in alike reactions.

Ligand-free nickel catalyzed perfluoroalkylation of arenes and heteroarenes

We describe a "ligand-free" Ni-catalyzed perfluoroalkylation of heteroarenes to produce a diverse array of trfiluoromethyl, pentafluoroethyl and heptafluoropropyl adducts. Catalysis proceeds at room temperature via a radical pathway. The catalytic protocol is distinguished by its simplicity, and its wide scope demonstrates the potential in the late-stage functionalization of drug analogues and peptides.

Formation and Reactivity of a Fleeting NiIII Bisphenoxyl Diradical Species

Cytochrome P450s and Galactose Oxidases exploit redox active ligands to form reactive high valent intermediates for oxidation reactions. This strategy works well for the late 3d metals where accessing high valent states is rather challenging. Herein, we report the oxidation of Ni^II (salen) (salen=N,N'-bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-salicylidene)-1,2-cyclohexane-(1R,2R)-diamine) with mCPBA (meta-chloroperoxybenzoic acid) to form a fleeting Ni^III bisphenoxyl diradical species, in CH₃ CN and CH₂ Cl₂ at -40 °C. Electrochemical and spectroscopic analyses using UV/Vis, EPR, and resonance Raman spectroscopies revealed oxidation events both on the ligand and the metal centre to yield a Ni^III bisphenoxyl diradical species. DFT calculations found the electronic structure of the ligand and the d-configuration of the metal center to be consistent with a Ni^III bisphenoxyl diradical species. This three electron oxidized species can perform hydrogen atom abstraction and oxygen atom transfer reactions.

Electron Shuttle in N-Heteroaromatic Ni Catalysts for Alkene Isomerization

Simple N-heteroaromatic Ni(II) precatalysts, (L)NiMe2 (L = bipy, bipym), were used for alkene isomerization. With an original reduction method using a simple borane (HB(Cat)), a low-valent Ni center was formed readily and showed good conversion when a reducing divalent lanthanide fragment, Cp*2Yb, was coordinated to the (bipym)NiMe2 complex, a performance not achieved by the monometallic (bipy)NiMe2 analogue. Experimental mechanistic investigations and computational studies revealed that the redox non-innocence of the L ligand triggered an electron shuttle process, allowing the elusive formation of Ni(I) species that were central to the isomerization process. Additionally, the reaction occurred with a preference for mono-isomerization rather than chain-walking isomerization. The presence of the low-valent ytterbium fragment, which contributed to the formation of the electron shuttle, strongly stabilized the catalysts, allowing catalytic loading as low as 0.5%. A series of alkenes with various architectures have been tested. The possibility to easily tune the various components of the heterobimetallic catalyst reported here, the ligand L and the divalent lanthanide fragment, opens perspectives for further applications in catalysis induced by Ni(I) species.

Nickel macrocyclic complexes with porphyrazine and some [benzo]substituted, oxo and fluoro ligands: DFT analysis

By using quantum chemical calculation data obtained by the DFT method with the OPBE/TZVP and B3PW91/TZVP levels, the principal possibility of the existence of three heteroligand complexes of nickel, each of which was shown to contain in the inner coordination sphere either porphyrazine or di[benzo]- and tetra[benzo]porphyrazine, oxygen (O[Formula: see text] and fluorine (F[Formula: see text] ions. The data on the geometric parameters of the molecular structure of these complexes are presented; which shows that NiN4 chelate nodes, all metal-chelate and non-chelate cycles in each of these complexes, are strictly planar. The bond angles between two donor nitrogen atoms and a nickel atom are equal to 90[Formula: see text], while the bond angles between donor atoms N, Ni, and O or F, in most cases, albeit insignificantly, differ from this value. Nevertheless, the bond angles formed by Ni, O and F atoms are exactly 180[Formula: see text]. NBO analysis data for these complexes are presented; it was noted that the ground state of all these complexes was a spin doublet. It has been shown that a good agreement between the data obtained using the above two versions of the DFT method occurs. Also, standard thermodynamic parameters of formation (standard enthalpy [Formula: see text], entropy [Formula: see text] and Gibbs’s energy [Formula: see text] for the macrocyclic compounds under consideration were calculated.

Photoinduced Trifluoromethylation of Arenes and Heteroarenes Catalyzed by High-Valent Nickel Complexes

We describe a series of air-stable Ni^III complexes supported by a simple, robust naphthyridine-based ligand. Access to the high-valent oxidation state is enabled by the CF₃ ligands on the nickel, while the naphthyridine exhibits either a monodentate or bidentate coordination mode that depends on the oxidation state and sterics, and enables facile aerobic oxidation of Ni^II to Ni^III . These Ni^III complexes act as efficient catalysts for photoinduced C(sp² )-H bond trifluoromethylation reactions of (hetero)arenes using versatile synthetic protocols. This blue LED light-mediated catalytic protocol proceeds via a radical pathway and demonstrates potential in the late-stage functionalization of drug analogs.

Nickel-Borolide Complexes and Their Complex Electronic Structure

Borolides (BC₄^2-) can be considered as dianionic heterocyclic analogues of monoanionic cyclopentadienides. Although both are formally six-π-electron donors, we herein demonstrate that the electronic structure of their corresponding transition metal complexes differs significantly, leading to altered properties. Specifically, the 18-electron sandwich complex Ni(iPr₂NBC₄Ph₂)₂ (1) features an ∼90° angle between the Ni-B-N planes and is best described as a combination of three limiting resonance structures with the major contribution stemming from a formally Ni²⁺ species bound to two monoanionic radical (BC₄^•-) ligands. Compound 1 displays two sequential one-electron oxidation events over a small potential range of <0.2 V, which strikingly contrasts the large potential separations between redox partners in the family of metallocenes, and the potential reasons for this unusual observation are discussed.

Dialkyl Ether Formation at High-Valent Nickel

In this article, we investigated the I2-promoted cyclic dialkyl ether formation from 6-membered oxanickelacycles originally reported by Hillhouse. A detailed mechanistic investigation based on spectroscopic and crystallographic analysis revealed that a putative reductive elimination to forge C(sp3)-OC(sp3) using I2 might not be operative. We isolated a paramagnetic bimetallic NiIII intermediate featuring a unique Ni2(OR)2 (OR = alkoxide) diamond-like core complemented by a μ-iodo bridge between the two Ni centers, which remains stable at low temperatures, thus permitting its characterization by NMR, EPR, X-ray, and HRMS. At higher temperatures (>-10 °C), such bimetallic intermediate thermally decomposes to afford large amounts of elimination products together with iodoalkanols. Observation of the latter suggests that a C(sp3)-I bond reductive elimination occurs preferentially to any other challenging C-O bond reductive elimination. Formation of cyclized THF rings is then believed to occur through cyclization of an alcohol/alkoxide to the recently forged C(sp3)-I bond. The results of this article indicate that the use of F+ oxidants permits the challenging C(sp3)-OC(sp3) bond formation at a high-valent nickel center to proceed in good yields while minimizing deleterious elimination reactions. Preliminary investigations suggest the involvement of a high-valent bimetallic NiIII intermediate which rapidly extrudes the C-O bond product at remarkably low temperatures. The new set of conditions permitted the elusive synthesis of diethyl ether through reductive elimination, a remarkable feature currently beyond the scope of Ni.

Bismuth-Catalyzed Oxidative Coupling of Arylboronic Acids with Triflate and Nonaflate Salts

Herein we present a Bi-catalyzed cross-coupling of arylboronic acids with perfluoroalkyl sulfonate salts based on a Bi(III)/Bi(V) redox cycle. An electron-deficient sulfone ligand proved to be key for the successful implementation of this protocol, which allows the unusual construction of C(sp²)–O bonds using commercially available NaOTf and KONf as coupling partners. Preliminary mechanistic studies as well as theoretical investigations reveal the intermediacy of a highly electrophilic Bi(V) species, which rapidly eliminates phenyl triflate.

Special Issue: "Advances in Homogeneous Catalysis"

The use of enzymes, organo-catalysts or transition metal catalysts, as opposed to the employment of stoichiometric quantities of other traditional promoters of different organic synthetic processes (like, inorganic/organic bases, Brønsted acids, radicals, etc.) has allowed the discovery of a great number of new synthetic protocols within the toolbox of organic chemists. Moreover, the employment of the aforementioned catalysts in organic synthesis permits: (i) the diminution of the global energy demand and production cost; (ii) the enhancement of both the chemoselectivity and stereoselectivity of the global process; and (iii) the reduction of metal-, organo- or bio-catalyst consumption, thanks to the possible recycling of the catalysts; all these being synthetic concepts closely related with the principles of so-called Green Chemistry. Thus, this Special Issue on “Advances in Homogenous Catalysis” has been aimed to showcase a series of stimulating contributions from international experts within different sub-areas of catalysis in organic synthesis (ranging from metal-, organo-, or bio-catalyzed organic reactions).
