Fish Responses to Alternative Feeding Ingredients under Abiotic Chronic Stress

Aquaculture has become one of the most attractive food production activities as it provides high-quality protein for the growing human population. However, the abiotic chronic stress of fish in intensive fish farming leads to a detrimental condition that affects their health and somatic growth, comprising productive performance. This work aims to comprehensively review the impact of alternative and novel dietary protein sources on fish somatic growth, metabolism, and antioxidative capacity under environmental/abiotic stressors. The documental research indicates that ingredients from rendered animal by-products, insects, bacteria as single-cell proteins, and fungal organisms (e.g., yeast, filamentous fungus, and mushrooms) benefit fish health and performance. A set of responses allows fish growth, health, and survival to remain unaffected by feeding with alternative ingredients during chronic environmental stress. Those ingredients stimulate the production of enzymes such as catalase, glutathione peroxidase, and selenoproteins that counteract ROS effects. In addition, the humoral immune system promotes immunoglobulin production (IgM) and cortisol plasmatic reduction. Further investigation must be carried out to establish the specific effect by species. Additionally, the mixture and the pre-treatment of ingredients such as hydrolysates, solid fermentations, and metabolite extraction potentialize the beneficial effects of diets in chronically stressed fish.

Alleviative effects of a novel strain Bacillus coagulans XY2 on copper-induced toxicity in zebrafish larvae

Copper (Cu) is a kind of micronutrient element that is essential for human metabolism. However, it is also considered as an environmental pollutant which is toxic to organisms at a high concentration level. Probiotics, regarded as beneficial microorganisms for promoting human health, have functions of antioxidant capacity, immune-enhancing properties, intestinal barrier protection and regulation. Several studies have reported that probiotics show positive effects on alleviating and intervening heavy metals toxicity. However, evidence for relieving copper-induced toxicity by probiotics is still limited. In this study, we firstly conducted a zebrafish larvae model to screen out microorganisms which are helpful for CuSO₄ toxicity resistance and one novel strain named as Bacillus coagulans XY2 was discovered with the best protective activity. B. coagulans XY2 significantly reduced the mortality of zebrafish larvae exposed to 10 µmol/L CuSO₄ for 96 hr, as well as alleviated the neutrophils infiltration in the larvae lateral line under a 2 hr exposure. B. coagulans XY2 exhibited a high in vitro antioxidant activity and against CuSO₄-induced oxidative stress in zebrafish larvae by up-regulating sod1, gstp1 and cat gene transcriptional levels and relevant enzymatic activities. CuSO₄ stimulated the inflammation process resulting in obvious increases of gene il-1β and il-10 transcription, which were suppressed by B. coagulans XY2 intervention. Overall, our results underline the bio-function of B. coagulans XY2 on protecting zebrafish larvae from copper toxicity, suggesting the potential application values of probiotics in copper toxicity alleviation on human and the environment.

Review of Bioactivity, Isolation, and Identification of Active Compounds from Antrodia cinnamomea

Antrodia cinnamomea is a precious and popular edible and medicinal mushroom. It has attracted increasing attention due to its various and excellent bioactivities, such as hepatoprotection, hypoglycemic, antioxidant, antitumor, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulation, and gut microbiota regulation properties. To elucidate its bioactivities and develop novel functional foods or medicines, numerous studies have focused on the isolation and identification of the bioactive compounds of A. cinnamomea. In this review, the recent advances in bioactivity, isolation, purification, and identification methods of active compounds from A. cinnamomea were summarized. The present work is beneficial to the further isolation and discovery of new active compounds from A. cinnamomea.

Effects of Antrodia camphorata-Supplemented Diets on the Non-Specific Immune Responses and Disease Resistance of Orange-Spotted Grouper (Epinephelus coioides) against Vibrio alginolyticus and Streptococcus iniae

In Taiwan, the mushroom Antrodia camphorata (AC) is used for medicinal purposes, including cancer prevention and treatment. This study aimed to investigate the effect of AC-supplemented diets on the innate immunity and disease resistance of the orange-spotted grouper Epinephelus coioides against two bacterial infections—Vibrio alginolyticus and Streptococcus iniae. Orange-spotted groupers were fed AC-supplemented diets at 0 (control), 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 g kg−1 for 28 days and examined for innate immune responses and survival rates against V. alginolyticus and S. iniae. The results showed that the innate cellular and humoral immune parameters, including respiratory burst, phagocytic activity, and lysozyme activity of leukocytes, along with serum alternative complement activity (ACH50) and superoxide dismutase activity, as well as interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-6, were all significantly increased in groupers fed AC-supplemented diets. Groupers fed diets containing AC at doses higher than 3.0 g kg−1 had better survival rates than the control group 3–18 days after V. alginolyticus or S. iniae challenge. The enhanced disease resistance may be attributable to AC-induced innate immunity, suggesting that utilizing AC as a dietary supplement at 3.0 g kg−1 may enhance the disease resistance of orange-spotted groupers against Vibrio or Streptococcus infection.
