Liquid-Liquid Extraction of Indium(III) from the HCl Medium by Ionic Liquid A327H+Cl- and Its Use in a Supported Liquid Membrane System

Indium extraction from nitrate medium using Cyphos ionic liquid 104 and its mathematical modeling

The treatment and recovery of pollutants in aquatic system is one of the greatest challenges for environmentalists throughout the world. In this study, solvent extraction of indium using phosphonium ionic liquid (Cyphos IL 104) as an extractant and its mathematical model was proposed for prediction of In(III) ion transport across a FSSLM (flat-sheet-supported liquid membrane). Solvent extraction experiments on indium have been carried out under various experimental conditions in order to assert some fundamental parameters using mathematical analysis for mass transfer process. Diffusion is the process which facilitates metal ion transport across liquid membrane, indicating the applicability of Fick's law of diffusion in model formulation. The influence of different parameters like composition of diluent, feed acidity, and ligand concentration on In(III) ion transport rate has been reported. At different extractant concentrations, the modeling outputs and experimental indium extraction were observed to be in reasonably good agreement.

Indium(III)/2-benzoylpyridine chemistry: interesting indium(III) bromide-assisted transformations of the ligand

Reactions of 2-benzoylpyridine, (py)(ph)CO, with InX₃ (X = Cl, Br) in EtOH at room temperature have been studied. The InCl₃/(py)(ph)CO system has provided access to complex [InCl₃{(py)(ph)CO}(EtOH)]·{(py)(ph)CO} (1) and the byproduct {(pyH)(ph)CO}Cl (2). The reaction of InBr₃ with (py)(ph)CO has led to a mixture of (L)[InBr₄{(py)(ph)CO}] (3) and [In₂Br₄{(py)(ph)CH(O)}₂(EtOH)₂] (4), where L⁺ is the 9-oxo-indolo[1,2-a]pyridinium cation and (py)(ph)CH(O)^- is the anion of (pyridin-2-yl)methanol. Based on solubility and crystallisation time differences between the two components of the mixture, complex 4 was isolated in pure form, i.e. free from 3. The formations of the counterion L⁺ and the coordinated (py)(ph)CH(O)^- anion represent clearly InBr₃-promoted/assisted transformations. Reaction mechanisms have been proposed for the formation of 2, 3 and 4. Complex 4 could also be isolated by the reaction of InBr₃ and pre-formed (py)(ph)CH(OH) in EtOH. The solid-state structures of 1, 3 and 4 were determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, while the identity of the salt 2 was confirmed by microanalyses and a variety of spectroscopic techniques, including ESI-MS spectra. In the indium(III) complexes, the metal ions are 6-coordinate with a distorted octahedral geometry. The halogeno groups (Cl^-, Br^-) in the three complexes are terminal. The (py)(ph)CO molecule behaves as a N,O-bidentate (1.11) ligand in 1 and 3. A terminal EtOH ligand completes the coordination sphere of In^III in 1. The alkoxo oxygen atoms of the two 2.21 (py)(ph)CH(O)^- ligands doubly bridge the In^III centers in 4 creating a {InIII2(μ-OR)₂}⁴⁺ core; a nitrogen atom of one reduced organic ligand, two bromo ions and one terminal EtOH molecule complete the 6-coordination at each metal centre. Complexes 1, 3 and 4 were characterised by IR and Raman spectroscopies, and the data were discussed in terms of their known solid-state structures. Molar conductivity data and ¹H NMR spectra were used in an attempt to probe the behaviour of the complexes in DMSO. The to-date observed metal ion-assisted/promoted transformations of (py)(ph)CO are also discussed.

In Situ XANES Studies on Extracted Copper from Scrap Cu/ITO Thin Film in an Ionic Liquid Containing Iodine/Iodide

Copper is coated on indium-tin-oxide (ITO) thin film to improve its electrical resistivity. In order to recycle the scrap Cu/ITO thin film, an ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([C4mim][PF6])) containing iodine/iodide (IL-I) was used to extract copper at 303, 343, 413, 374, and 543 K. The extraction efficiency of copper from the scrap Cu/ITO thin film was >99% with IL-I. Using XRD, crystal In2O3 was found on the regenerated ITO thin film which had a resistivity similar to that of unused ITO thin film. Using X-ray absorption near edge structural (XANES) spectroscopy, at least two paths for the extraction of copper from the Cu/ITO thin film into IL-I were identified. Path I: Copper is stripped from the scrap Cu/ITO thin film and then interacts with I3− in the IL-I to form nano CuI. The nano CuI further interacts with I−. Path II: Copper interacts with I3− on the surface of the Cu/ITO thin film to form nano CuI. The nano CuI is further stripped into the IL-I to interact with I−. During extraction, the nanoparticle size could be increased in the IL-I by conglomeration due to fewer coordinating anions and decrease in the viscosity of IL-I at high temperatures. Furthermore, nanoparticle growth was affected by [PF6]− of the IL-I determined via 31P NMR.

Ionic Liquids as Components of Systems for Metal Extraction

This review addresses research and development on the use of ionic liquids as extractants and diluents in the solvent extraction of metals. Primary attention is given to the efficiency and selectivity of metal extraction from industrial wastewater with ionic liquids composed of various cations and anions. The review covers literature sources published in the period of 2010–2021. The bibliography includes 98 references dedicated to research on the extraction and separation of lanthanides (17 sources), actinides (5 sources), heavy metals (35 sources), noble metals, including the platinum group (16 sources), and some other metals.
