Desymmetrizing Heteroleptic [Cu(P^P)(N^N)][PF6] Compounds: Effects on Structural and Photophysical Properties, and Solution Dynamic Behavior

Heteroleptic copper(I) complexes with coumarin-substituted aminodiphosphine and diimine ligands: synthesis and photophysical studies

The synthesis of heteroleptic Cu(I) complexes with coumarin-functionalized aminodiphosphine and diimine ligands is described. The complexes show yellow to deep-red phosphorescence in the solid state at ambient temperature with quantum yields up to 21%. The emission color of the complexes can be tuned by systematic modifications in the ligand system.

Photoactive Copper Complexes: Properties and Applications

Photocatalyzed and photosensitized chemical processes have seen growing interest recently and have become among the most active areas of chemical research, notably due to their applications in fields such as medicine, chemical synthesis, material science or environmental chemistry. Among all homogeneous catalytic systems reported to date, photoactive copper(I) complexes have been shown to be especially attractive, not only as alternative to noble metal complexes, and have been extensively studied and utilized recently. They are at the core of this review article which is divided into two main sections. The first one focuses on an exhaustive and comprehensive overview of the structural, photophysical and electrochemical properties of mononuclear copper(I) complexes, typical examples highlighting the most critical structural parameters and their impact on the properties being presented to enlighten future design of photoactive copper(I) complexes. The second section is devoted to their main areas of application (photoredox catalysis of organic reactions and polymerization, hydrogen production, photoreduction of carbon dioxide and dye-sensitized solar cells), illustrating their progression from early systems to the current state-of-the-art and showcasing how some limitations of photoactive copper(I) complexes can be overcome with their high versatility.

The effects of introducing terminal alkenyl substituents into the 2,2'-bipyridine domain in [Cu(N^N)(P^P)]+ coordination compounds

The N^N chelating ligands 6,6'-bis(but-3-en-1-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine (1), 6-(but-3-en-1-yl)-6'-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine (2), 6,6'-bis(pent-4-en-1-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine (3) and 6-(pent-4-en-1-yl)-6'-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine (4) have been prepared, characterized, and incorporated into the heteroleptic [Cu(N^N)(P^P)][PF₆] complexes in which P^P is either POP (bis(2-(diphenylphosphanyl)phenyl)ether) or xantphos (9,9-dimethyl-9H-xanthene-4,5-diyl)bis(diphenylphosphane). The eight coordination compounds have been fully characterized, including the single crystal structures of [Cu(1)(xantphos)][PF₆], [Cu(1)(POP)][PF₆]·CH₂Cl₂, [Cu(2)(xantphos)][PF₆], [Cu(2)(POP)][PF₆] and [Cu(3)(POP)][PF₆]·0.5Et₂O. The [Cu(N^N)(P^P)]⁺ cations exhibit a partially reversible or irreversible Cu⁺/Cu²⁺ oxidation at more positive potentials than the benchmark [Cu(bpy)(P^P)]⁺ and [Cu(Me₂bpy)(P^P)]⁺ complexes consistent with the increase in steric hindrance of the terminal alkenyl substituents. When excited in the region of the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) absorption, solutions of the [Cu(N^N)(P^P)][PF₆] complexes are weak emitters with λmaxem in the range 565-578 nm. However, powdered samples achieve photoluminescence quantum yields in the range of 28.5 to 62.3%, with the highest PLQY found for [Cu(3)(POP)][PF₆] with an excited-state lifetime, τ, of 16.1 μs. For [Cu(3)(POP)][PF₆], the excited state lifetime was measured in MeTHF at 293 and 77 K, and the increase in τ from 1.77 to 59.4 μs upon cooling supports thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) at ambient temperatures.

Heteroleptic [Cu(P^P)(N^N)][PF6] Complexes: Effects of Isomer Switching from 2,2′-biquinoline to 1,1′-biisoquinoline

The preparation and characterization of [Cu(POP)(biq)][PF6] and [Cu(xantphos)(biq)][PF6] are reported (biq = 1,1′-biisoquinoline, POP = bis(2-(diphenylphosphanyl)phenyl)ether, and xantphos = (9,9-dimethyl-9H-xanthene-4,5-diyl)bis(diphenylphosphane). The single crystal structure of [Cu(POP)(biq)][PF6] 0.5Et2O was determined and compared to that in three salts of [Cu(POP)(bq)]+ in which bq = 2,2′-biquinoline. The P–C–P angle is 114.456(19)o in [Cu(POP)(biq)]+ compared to a range of 118.29(3)–119.60(3)o [Cu(POP)(bq)]+. There is a change from an intra-POP PPh2-phenyl/(C6H4)2O-arene π-stacking in [Cu(POP)(biq)]+ to a π-stacking contact between the POP and bq ligands in [Cu(POP)(bq)]+. In solution and at ambient temperatures, the [Cu(POP)(biq)][PF6]+ and [Cu(xantphos)(biq)]+ cations undergo several concurrent dynamic processes, as evidenced in their multinuclear NMR spectra. The photophysical and electrochemical behaviors of the heteroleptic copper (I) complexes were investigated, and the effects of changing from bq to biq are described. Short Cu···O distances within the [Cu(POP)(biq)]+ and [Cu(xantphos)(biq)]+ cations may contribute to their very low photoluminescent quantum yields.
