Simultaneous Grafting Polymerization of Acrylic Acid and Silver Aggregates Formation by Direct Reduction Using γ Radiation onto Silicone Surface and Their Antimicrobial Activity and Biocompatibility

Polymers are versatile compounds which physical and chemical properties can be taken advantage of in wide applications. Particularly, in the biomedical field, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is one of the most used for its high biocompatibility, easy manipulation, thermal, and chemical stability. Nonetheless, its hydrophobic nature makes it susceptible to bacterial pollution, which represents a disadvantage in this field. A potential solution to this is through the graft of stimuli-sensitive polymers that, besides providing hydrophilicity, allow the creation of a drug delivery system. In this research, PDMS was grafted with acrylic acid (AAc) and vinyl pyrrolidone (VP) in two steps using gamma radiation. The resulting material was analyzed by several characterization techniques such as infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), swelling, contact angle, critical pH, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), demonstrating the presence of both polymers onto PDMS films and showing hydrophilic and pH-response properties. Among the performed methods to graft, the loading and release of ciprofloxacin were successful in those samples obtained by direct irradiation method. Furthermore, the antimicrobial assays showed zones of inhibition for microorganisms such as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.

Water-Soluble Starch-Based Copolymers Synthesized by Electron Beam Irradiation: Physicochemical and Functional Characterization

Modification of natural polymers for applications in the treatment of waste and surface waters is a continuous concern of researchers and technologists in close relation to the advantages they provide as related to classical polymeric flocculants. In this work, copolymers of starch-graft-polyacrylamide (St-g-PAM) were synthesized by electron beam irradiation used as the free radical initiator by applying different irradiation doses and dose rates. St-g-PAM loaded with ex situ prepared silver nanoparticles was also synthesized by using an accelerated electron beam. The graft copolymers were characterized by chemical analysis, rheology, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results showed that the level of grafting (monomer conversion coefficient and residual monomer concentration), intrinsic viscosity and thermal behavior (thermodynamic parameters) were influenced by the irradiation dose, dose rate and presence of silver nanoparticles. The flocculation performances of the synthesized copolymers were also tested on water from the meat industry in experiments at the laboratory level. In the coagulation–flocculation process, the copolymer aqueous solutions showed good efficiency to improve different water quality indicators.

Fouling Prevention in Polymeric Membranes by Radiation Induced Graft Copolymerization

The application of membrane processes in various fields has now undergone accelerated developments, despite the presence of some hurdles impacting the process efficiency. Fouling is arguably the main hindrance for a wider implementation of polymeric membranes, particularly in pressure-driven membrane processes, causing higher costs of energy, operation, and maintenance. Radiation induced graft copolymerization (RIGC) is a powerful versatile technique for covalently imparting selected chemical functionalities to membranes' surfaces, providing a potential solution to fouling problems. This article aims to systematically review the progress in modifications of polymeric membranes by RIGC of polar monomers onto membranes using various low- and high-energy radiation sources (UV, plasma, γ-rays, and electron beam) for fouling prevention. The feasibility of the modification method with respect to physico-chemical and antifouling properties of the membrane is discussed. Furthermore, the major challenges to the modified membranes in terms of sustainability are outlined and the future research directions are also highlighted. It is expected that this review would attract the attention of membrane developers, users, researchers, and scientists to appreciate the merits of using RIGC for modifying polymeric membranes to mitigate the fouling issue, increase membrane lifespan, and enhance the membrane system efficiency.

A novel Y-shaped photoiniferter used for the construction of polydimethylsiloxane surfaces with antibacterial and antifouling properties

The simultaneous introduction of two new functionalities into the same polymeric substrate under mild reaction conditions is an interesting and important topic. Herein, dual-functional polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surfaces with antibacterial and antifouling properties were conveniently developed via a novel Y-shaped asymmetric dual-functional photoiniferter (Y-iniferter). The Y-iniferter was initially immobilized onto the PDMS surface by radical coupling under visible light irradiation. Afterwards, poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) brushes and antibacterial ionic liquid (IL) fragments were simultaneously immobilized on the Y-iniferter-modified PDMS surfaces by combining the sulfur(VI)-fluoride exchange (SuFEx) click reaction and UV-photoinitiated polymerization. Experiments using E. coli as a model bacterium demonstrated that the modified PDMS surfaces had both the expected antibacterial properties of the IL fragments and the excellent antifouling properties of PHEMA brushes. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity of the modified PDMS surfaces to L929 cells was examined in vitro with a CCK-8 assay, which showed that the modified surfaces maintained excellent cytocompatibility. Briefly, this strategy of constructing an antibacterial and antifouling PDMS surface has the advantages of simplicity and convenience and might inspire the construction of diverse dual-functional surfaces by utilizing PDMS more effectively.
