Synthesis of New Hybrid Structured Magnetite Crosslinked Poly Ionic Liquid for Efficient Removal of Coomassie Brilliant Blue R-250 Dye in Aqueous Medium

Electrochemical detection and removal of brilliant blue dye via photocatalytic degradation and adsorption using phyto-synthesized nanoparticles

Herein, we report a sensitive electrochemical platform prepared by modifying the electrode surface with copper-doped zinc oxide nanoparticles; these nanoparticles were prepared via a green synthetic approach using the extract of Cassia fistula leaves and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). For the best response of the electrode modifier, a number of experimental conditions were optimized to obtain the most intense signal of the target analyte Coomassie brilliant blue using a rapid analysis technique square wave voltammetry. The designed sensor displayed remarkable sensitivity for Coomassie brilliant blue with a detection limit of 0.1 nM under the optimized conditions. Moreover, the repeatability, specificity and reproducibility of the designed sensor demonstrated its potential for practical applications. The sensing platform was also used for monitoring the degradation kinetics of the Coomassie brilliant blue dye. Catalytic degradation of the dye was performed using the synergistic effect of Cu-ZnO NPs together with Fenton reagent. The dye degraded by 96% in 60 minutes under neutral conditions, which is one of the main achievements of this work that has never been reported. The photocatalytic breakdown of Coomassie brilliant blue was also monitored using UV-visible spectroscopy. The degradation kinetics results of both techniques agreed well. The adsorption of Coomassie brilliant blue using ZnO NPs was monitored spectrophotometrically. The adsorption data were fitted in a pseudo-second order kinetic model by following the Langmuir isotherm at lower concentration and Freundlich isotherm at higher concentration.

Adsorptive Removal of Direct Azo Dyes from Textile Wastewaters Using Weakly Basic Anion Exchange Resin

Direct dyes are still widely used for coloring a variety of materials due to their ease of use and the wide range of colors available at a moderate cost of production. In the aquatic environment, some direct dyes, especially the azo type and their biotransformation products, are toxic, carcinogenic and mutagenic. Hence the need for their careful removal from industrial effluents. It was proposed adsorptive retention of C.I. Direct Red 23 (DR23), C.I. Direct Orange 26 (DO26) and C.I. Direct Black 22 (DB22) from effluents using anion exchange resin of tertiary amine functionalities Amberlyst A21 (A21). Applying the Langmuir isotherm model, the monolayer capacities were calculated as 285.6 mg/g for DO26 and 271.1 mg/g for DO23. The Freundlich isotherm model seems to be the better one for the description of DB22 uptake by A21, and the isotherm constant was found to be 0.609 mg^1-1/n L^1/n/g. The kinetic parameters revealed that the pseudo-second-order model could be used for the description of experimental data rather than the pseudo-first-order model or intraparticle diffusion model. The dye adsorption decreased in the presence of anionic and non-ionic surfactants, while their uptake was enhanced in the presence of Na₂SO₄ and Na₂CO₃. Regeneration of the A21 resin was difficult; a slight increase in its efficiency was observed using 1M HCl, 1 M NaOH and 1 M NaCl solutions in 50% v/v methanol.

Ionic liquid based composites: A versatile materials for remediation of aqueous environmental contaminants

Water pollution is one of the most aggravated problems threatening the sustainability of human race and other life forms due to the rapid pace of civilization and industrialization. A long history exists of release of hazardous pollutants into the water bodies due to selfish human activities since the Industrial Revolution, but no effort has been completely successful in curbing the activities that result in the degradation of our environment. These pollutants are harmful, carcinogenic and have adverse health effects to all forms of life. Thus, remarkable efforts have been geared up to obtain clean water by exploiting science and technology. The application of Ionic liquids (ILs) as sustainable materials have received widespread attention since the last decade. Their interesting properties, simplicity in operation and satisfactory binding capacities in elimination of the contaminants makes them a valuable prospect to be utilized in wastewater treatment. Immobilizing and grafting the solid supports with ILs have fetched efficient results to exploit their potential in the adsorptive removal processes. This review provides an understanding of the recent developments and outlines the possible utility of IL based nano adsorbents in the removal of organic compounds, dyes and heavy metal ions from aqueous medium. Effect of several parameters such as sorbent dosage, pH and temperature on the removal efficiency has also been discussed. Moreover, the adsorption isotherms, thermodynamics and mechanism are comprehensively studied. It is envisioned that the literature gathered in this article will guide the budding scientists to put their interest in this area of research in the days to come.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Application of Magnetite Nanoparticles Coated with Hydrophobic Polyethyleneimine for Oil Spill Cleaning

Pollution with oil spills, a major contributor to water contamination, has a remarkable effect on the economy, biodiversity, and environment. To protect marine species and environment, efforts should be undertaken for developing efficient ways to remove oil spills. The current work discusses the oil spill removal using magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) functionalized with hydrophobic polyethyleneimine (HPEA). In this respect, nonylphenol pentaethylenehexamine (NTEPA) and nonylphenol triethylenetetramine (NDETA) were prepared by a simple one-step method and used as capping agents in the synthesis of hydrophobically modified magnetite nanoparticles designated as NDETA/Fe3O4 (magnetite as a core and NDETA as a shell) and NTEPA/Fe3O4 (magnetite as a core and NTEPA as a shell). The prepared MNPs were characterized using FTIR, XRD, TEM, DLS, TGA, and DSA to determine their physical and chemical properties. Additionally, MNPs were applied as oil spill collectors with high efficiencies that reached 93% and 90% for NDETA/Fe3O4 and NTEPA/Fe3O4, respectively, at low magnetite to oil ratios.
