Nonlinear Free and Forced Vibrations of a Hyperelastic Micro/Nanobeam Considering Strain Stiffening Effect

Application of Surface Stress-Driven Model for Higher Vibration Modes of Functionally Graded Nanobeams

This paper employs a surface stress-driven nonlocal theory to investigate the synergistic impact of long-range interaction and surface energy on higher vibration modes of Bernoulli-Euler nanobeams made of functionally graded material. It takes into account surface effects such as the surface modulus of elasticity, residual surface stresses, surface density, and rotary inertia. The governing equation is derived through the application of Hamilton's principle. The novelty of this work lies in its pioneering approach to studying higher-order vibrations, carefully considering the combination of long-range interactions and surface energy in nanobeams of functionally graded materials through a well-posed mathematical model of nonlocal elasticity. This study conducts a parametric investigation, examining the effects of the nonlocal parameter and the material gradient index for four static schemes: Cantilever, Simply-Supported, Clamped-Pinned and Clamped-Clamped nanobeams. The outcomes are presented and discussed, highlighting the normalized nonlocal natural frequencies for the second through fifth modes of vibration in each case under study. In particular, this study illustrates the central role of surface effects in the dynamic response of nanobeams, emphasizing the importance of considering them. Furthermore, the parametric analysis reveals that the dynamic response is influenced by the combined effects of the nonlocal parameter, the material gradient index, the shapes of the cross-sections considered, as well as the static scheme analyzed.

Hyperelastic Microcantilever AFM: Efficient Detection Mechanism Based on Principal Parametric Resonance

The impetus of writing this paper is to propose an efficient detection mechanism to scan the surface profile of a micro-sample using cantilever-based atomic force microscopy (AFM), operating in non-contact mode. In order to implement this scheme, the principal parametric resonance characteristics of the resonator are employed, benefiting from the bifurcation-based sensing mechanism. It is assumed that the microcantilever is made from a hyperelastic material, providing large deformation under small excitation amplitude. A nonlinear strain energy function is proposed to capture the elastic energy stored in the flexible component of the device. The tip–sample interaction is modeled based on the van der Waals non-contact force. The nonlinear equation governing the AFM’s dynamics is established using the extended Hamilton’s principle, obeying the Euler–Bernoulli beam theory. As a result, the vibration behavior of the system is introduced by a nonlinear equation having a time-dependent boundary condition. To capture the steady-state numerical response of the system, a developed Galerkin method is utilized to discretize the partial differential equation to a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODE) that are solved by the combination of shooting and arc-length continuation method. The output reveals that while the resonator is set to be operating near twice the fundamental natural frequency, the response amplitude undergoes a significant drop to the trivial stable branch as the sample’s profile experiences depression in the order of the picometer. According to the performed sensitivity analysis, the proposed working principle based on principal parametric resonance is recommended to design AFMs with ultra-high detection resolution for surface profile scanning.

Application of the Higher-Order Hamilton Approach to the Nonlinear Free Vibrations Analysis of Porous FG Nano-Beams in a Hygrothermal Environment Based on a Local/Nonlocal Stress Gradient Model of Elasticity

Nonlinear transverse free vibrations of porous functionally-graded (FG) Bernoulli–Euler nanobeams in hygrothermal environments through the local/nonlocal stress gradient theory of elasticity were studied. By using the Galerkin method, the governing equations were reduced to a nonlinear ordinary differential equation. The closed form analytical solution of the nonlinear natural flexural frequency was then established using the higher-order Hamiltonian approach to nonlinear oscillators. A numerical investigation was developed to analyze the influence of different parameters both on the thermo-elastic material properties and the structural response, such as material gradient index, porosity volume fraction, nonlocal parameter, gradient length parameter, mixture parameter, and the amplitude of the nonlinear oscillator on the nonlinear flexural vibrations of metal–ceramic FG porous Bernoulli–Euler nano-beams.
