Adsorption of contaminants by nanomaterials synthesized by green and conventional routes: a critical review

Nanomaterials, due to their large surface area and selectivity, have stood out as an alternative for the adsorption of contaminants from water and effluents. Synthesized from green or traditional protocols, the main advantages and disadvantages of green nanomaterials are the elimination of the use of toxic chemicals and difficulty of reproducing the preparation of nanomaterials, respectively, while traditional nanomaterials have the main advantage of being able to prepare nanomaterials with well-defined morphological properties and the disadvantage of using potentially toxic chemicals. Thus, based on the particularities of green and conventional nanomaterials, this review aims to fill a gap in the literature on the comparison of the synthesis, morphology, and application of these nanomaterials in the adsorption of contaminants in water. Focusing on the adsorption of heavy metals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, dyes, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, and phenol derivatives in water, for the first time, a review article explored and compared how chemical and morphological changes in nanoadsorbents synthesized by green and conventional protocols affect performance in the adsorption of contaminants in water. Despite advances in the area, there is still a lack of review articles on the topic.

Performance and Kinetics of BPA Degradation Initiated by Powdered Iron (or Ferrous Sulfate) and Persulfate in Aqueous Solutions

The widespread use of bisphenol A (BPA) in industry has resulted in BPA contamination of water bodies and even endocrine-disrupting effects on organisms and humans through water transmission. Advanced oxidation processes based on sulfate radicals have received increasing attention due to their ability to efficiently degrade endocrine disruptors (including BPA) in water. In this study, powdered iron (Fe(0)) and ferrous sulfate (Fe(II)) were used as activators to activate persulfate (PS) for the degradation of BPA. The effects of the dosage of the activator, the concentration of PS, the concentration of BPA, the initial solution pH, and the reaction temperature on the degradation efficiency of BPA in Fe(II)/PS and Fe(0)/PS systems were investigated, and the kinetics of BPA degradation under different reaction conditions were analyzed. The results showed that the optimal conditions were [Fe(II)] = 0.1 g/L, [PS] = 0.4 mM, [BPA] = 1 mg/L, T = 70 °C and pH = 5.0 for the Fe(II)/PS system and [Fe(0)] = 0.5 g/L, [PS] = 0.5 mM, [BPA] = 1 mg/L, T = 70 °C and pH = 5.0 for the Fe(0)/PS system; both systems were able to achieve equally good degradation of BPA. The degradation of BPA in the Fe(II)/PS system satisfied the pseudo-secondary kinetic equation under varying PS concentration conditions, otherwise the degradation of BPA in both systems conformed to the pseudo-first-order kinetic equation.

Room-Temperature, Ionic-Liquid-Enhanced, Beta-Cyclodextrin-Based, Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for the Selective Extraction of Abamectin

To ensure environmental protection and food quality and safety, the trace level detection of pesticide residues with molecularly imprinted polymers using a more economic, reliable, and greener approach is always demanded. Herein, novel, enhanced, imprinted polymers based on beta-cyclodextrin, using room-temperature, ionic liquid as a solvent for abamectin were developed with a simple polymerization process. The successful synthesis of the polymers was verified, with morphological and structural characterization performed via scanning electron microscope analysis, nitrogen adsorption experiments, and thermogravimetric analysis. The imprinted polymers showed good adsorption ability, which was confirmed with a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and a Langmuir isotherm model, as they exhibit a theoretical adsorption of 15.08 mg g⁻¹ for abamectin. The polymers showed high selectivity for abamectin and significant reusability without significant performance loss. The MIPs were used to analyze abamectin in spiked apple, banana, orange, and grape samples, and as a result, a good recovery of 81.67−101.47%, with 1.26−4.36% relative standard deviation, and limits of detection and quantitation of 0.02 µg g⁻¹ and 0.05 µg g⁻¹, respectively, was achieved within a linear range of 0.03−1.50 µg g⁻¹. Thus, room-temperature, ionic-liquid-enhanced, beta-cyclodextrin-based, molecularly imprinted polymers for the selective detection of abamectin proved to be a convenient and practical platform.
