Quinoline Synthesis: Nanocatalyzed Green Protocols-An Overview

Heterocyclic compounds are of great interest in our daily lives. They are widely distributed in nature and are synthesized in laboratories. Heterocycles play an important role in the metabolism of all living cells, including vitamins and coenzyme precursors like thiamine and riboflavin. Furthermore, heterocyclic systems are essential building blocks for creating innovative materials with intriguing electrical, mechanical, and biological properties. Also, more than 85% of all biologically active chemical entities comprise a heterocycle. As a result, heterocycle synthesis piqued researchers' curiosity, and in recent decades, chemists have concentrated more on nitrogen-containing cyclic nuclei in structures. Quinoline and its derivatives exhibit several biological functions, including antimicrobial, anticancer, antimalarial, anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, and antiasthmatic effects. In addition, over a hundred quinoline-based drugs are available to treat a variety of disorders. Because of its biological importance, researchers developed one-pot synthetic methods employing effective acid/base catalysts (Lewis acids, Brønsted acids, and ionic liquids), reagents, and transition-metal-based catalysts. These methods have some downsides, including longer reaction times, harsher reaction conditions, creation of byproducts, costly catalysts, use of hazardous solvents, an unacceptable economic yield, and catalyst recovery. Researchers' focus has switched to creating environmentally friendly and effective methods for the synthesis of quinoline derivatives as a result of these methodologic shortcomings. Because of its special qualities, the use of nanocatalysts or nanocomposites offers an option for the effective synthesis of quinolines. This review focuses on the published research articles on nanocatalysts to synthesize substituted quinoline derivatives. This review covers all contributions until May 2024, focusing on quinoline ring building and mechanistic issues. With the aid of this review, we anticipate that synthetic chemists will be able to develop more effective methods of synthesizing quinolines.

Iron(III) Complexes with Pyridine Group Coordination and Dissociation Reversible Equilibrium: Cooperative Activation of CO2 and Epoxides into Cyclic Carbonates

Herein, a series of [ONSN]-type iron(III) complexes were synthesized. A binary catalytic system in combination with iron complexes and tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB) exhibited high activity for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from CO2 (1 atm) and terminal epoxides at room temperature. Additionally, single-component iron complexes without using additional TBAB as nucleophiles also showed high activity for the cycloaddition of CO2 and terminal epoxides under 80 °C and 0.5 MPa of CO2. This study demonstrates that single-component iron catalysts provide a competitive alternative to binary catalytic systems for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from CO2 and epoxides. Mechanistic studies on a single-component iron catalytic system suggest that the temperature serves as a role of responsive switch for controlling the coordination and dissociation of pyridine bearing iron catalysts detected using in situ infrared spectroscopy, and uncoordinated pyridine activates CO2 to form carbamate. Studies of electrospray ionization high-resolution mass spectrometry reveal that an iron center was used as a Lewis acidic site, free halogen anions from the iron center were used as a nucleophilic site, and coordinated pyridine was released from iron complexes to activate CO2.

S-Doping Regulated Iron Spin States in Fe-N-C Single-Atom Material for Enhanced Peroxidase-Mimicking Activity at Neutral pH

Designing biomimetic nanomaterials with peroxidase (POD)-like activity at neutral pH remains a significant challenge. An S-doping strategy is developed to afford an iron single-atom nanomaterial (Fe1@CN-S) with high POD-like activity under neutral conditions. To the best of knowledge, there is the first example on the achievement of excellent POD-like activity under neutral conditions by regulating the active site structure. S-doping not only promotes the dissociation of the N─H bond in 3,3″,5,5″-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), but also facilitates the desorption of OH* by the transformation of iron species' spin states from middle-spin (MS FeII) to low-spin (LS FeII). Meanwhile, LS FeII sites typically have more unfilled d orbitals, thereby exhibiting stronger interactions with H2O2 than MS FeII, which can enhance POD-like activity. Finally, a one-pot visual detection of glucose at pH 7 is performed, demonstrating the best selectivity and sensitivity than previous reports.

Fe–FeOx nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped carbon material: a facile catalyst for selective synthesis of quinazolines from alcohols in water

A Fe–FeOx@NC catalyst with N-doped carbon encapsulated Fe–FeOx nanoparticles has excellent performance in the synthesis of quinazolines.
