Water Dispersible Few-Layer Graphene Stabilized by a Novel Pyrene Derivative at Micromolar Concentration

Lattice thermal conductivity of 2D nanomaterials: a simple semi-empirical approach

Extracting reliable information on certain physical properties of materials, such as thermal transport, can be computationally very demanding. Aiming to overcome such difficulties in the particular case of lattice thermal conductivity (LTC) of 2D nanomaterials, we propose a simple, fast, and accurate semi-empirical approach for LTC calculation. The approach is based on parameterized thermochemical equations and Arrhenius-like fitting procedures, thus avoiding molecular dynamics or ab initio protocols, which frequently require computationally expensive simulations. As a proof of concept, we obtain the LTC of some prototypical physical systems, such as graphene (and other 2D carbon allotropes), hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), silicene, germanene, binary, and ternary BNC lattices and two examples of the fullerene network family. Our obtained values are in good agreement with other theoretical and experimental estimations, nonetheless, being derived in a rather straightforward way, at a fraction of the usual computational cost.

Facile Preparation of Fluorescent Carbon Dots from Glutathione and l-Tryptophan for Sensitive and Selective Off/On Detection of Fe3+ Ions in Serum and Their Bioimaging Application

In the past decade, carbon dots (CDs) have attracted considerable attention due to their excellent properties such as low toxicity, good biocompatibility, good fluorescence imaging, etc. Here, glutathione and l-tryptophan were used as carbon sources to hydrothermally synthesize CDs for sensitive and selective off/on detection of Fe³⁺ ions. The CDs are spherical nanoparticles with an average particle size of 3.8 nm and the presence of organic groups such as hydroxyl, carboxyl, sulfhydryl, and amino groups on their surface. The experiment results display that Fe³⁺ ions can be selectively and sensitively detected by quenching the fluorescence of CDs. Moreover, the fluorescence of the CDs+Fe³⁺ system can be restored after adding ascorbic acid. Thus, an off/on fluorescent probe for the determination of Fe³⁺ can be formed using the as-synthesized CDs solution. The CDs show a good linear range of 0-13.89 mM and a 0.0331 μM limit of detection for Fe³⁺, and the most probable mechanism concluded from ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry, and fluorescence spectrophotometry is a mixed static and dynamic quenching. Furthermore, the cytotoxicity experiment results show that CDs have low toxicity and can be used for intracellular imaging.

Mixed Carbon Nanomaterial/Epoxy Resin for Electrically Conductive Adhesives

The increasing complexity of printed circuit boards (PCBs) due to miniaturization, increased the density of electronic components, and demanding thermal management during the assembly triggered the research of innovative solder pastes and electrically conductive adhesives (ECAs). Current commercial ECAs are typically based on epoxy matrices with a high load (>60%) of silver particles, generally in the form of microflakes. The present work reports the production of ECAs based on epoxy/carbon nanomaterials using carbon nanotubes (single and multi-walled) and exfoliated graphite, as well as hybrid compositions, within a range of concentrations. The composites were tested for morphology (dispersion of the conductive nanomaterials), electrical and thermal conductivity, rheological characteristics and deposition on a test PCB. Finally, the ECA’s shelf life was assessed by mixing all the components and conductive nanomaterials, and evaluating the cure of the resin before and after freezing for a time range up to nine months. The ECAs produced could be stored at −18 °C without affecting the cure reaction.
