Preparation and Characterization of Nanocomposite Films Containing Nano-Aluminum Nitride and Cellulose Nanofibrils

ZnO microrods sandwiched between layered CNF matrix: Fabrication, stress transfer, and mechanical properties

Functional metal oxide particles are often added to the polymers to prepare flexible functional polymer composites with adequate mechanical properties. ZnO and cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) outstand among these metal oxides and the polymer matrices respectively due to their various advantages. Herein, we in situ prepare ZnO microrods in the presence of CNF, which resultes in a layered composite structure. The ZnO microrods are sandwiched between the CNF layers and strongly bind to highly charged CNF, which provides a better stress transfer during mechanical activity. Digital image correction (DIC) and finite element analysis-based computational homogenization methods are used to investigate the relationship between mechanical properties and composite structure, and the stress transfer to the ZnO microrods. Full-field strain measurements in DIC reveal that the in situ ZnO microrods preparation leads to their homogenous distribution in the CNF matrix unlike other methods, which require external means such as ultrasonication. The computational homogenization technique provides a fairly good insight into the stress transfer between constituents in microstructure as well as a good prediction of macroscopic mechanical properties, which otherwise, would be challenging to be assessed by any ordinary mechanical testing in the layered composites. Finally, we also demonstrate that these composites could be used as physiological motion sensors for human health monitoring.

Emerging challenges in the thermal management of cellulose nanofibril-based supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries and solar cells: A review

In recent years, extensive efforts have been devoted to electronic miniaturization and integration. Accordingly, heating up of electronics has become a critical problem that needs to be urgently solved by efficient and reliable thermal management. Electronic device substrates made of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) exhibit outstanding flexibility, mechanical properties, and optical properties. Combining CNFs with high-thermal-conductivly fillers is an effective thermal management technique. This paper focuses on the thermal management of electronic devices and highlights the potential of CNF-based materials for efficient thermal management of energy storage electronic such as supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries and solar cells. A high-thermal-conductivity composite material for electronic devices can be obtained by combining CNFs as the framework material with carbon nanotubes, graphene, and inorganic nitrides. Moreover, The research progress in the application of CNFs-based materials for supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries and solar cells is highlighted, and the emerging challenges of different CNFs-based energy storage devices are discussed.

Isolation of the Flavonoid from Bamboo Residues and Its Application as Metal Ion Sensor in Vitro

Fluorescence sensors prepared from natural polymers have received increasing attention based on their luminescence characteristics for bioimaging, cell imaging, and intracellular detection of inorganic metabolites. In this work, flavonoids isolated from bamboo residues (BRF) were applied as fluorescence sensors for different metal cations' detection in vitro. Results showed the optimal flavonoids extraction condition of solid to liquid ratio, ethanol concentration, extraction time and temperature were determined at 1:25, 50%, 240 min and 90 °C, respectively, resulting in an extraction yield with 104.7 mg/100 g bamboo residues. The BRF is mainly composed of isoorientin, isovitexin, pinosylvin, tricin and isorhamnetin by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis. It is found that the BRF displayed strong blue-green emission as well as notable excitation, which can selectively and sensitively detect Fe3+ with the limit of detection (LOD) as low as 38.0 nM. In the Fe3+ detection was no obvious interference by other cations except for Al3+. In addition, the BRF displayed excellent biocompatibility that can be applied to bioimages of the intracellular detection of Fe3+ in L02 cells. Finally, it is found that the BRF possessed significant antioxidant properties in scavenging H2O2-induced endogenous reactive oxygen species (ROS) in a zebrafish module (in vivo) and L02 cells (in vitro). These results showed that the flavonoid products sustainably isolated from an abundant lignocellulosic waste appear to be effective fluorescent sensors for Fe3+ detection in biological systems with excellent biocompatibility and antioxidant activity.
