Stabilization and strengthening effects of filamentous nanocellulose in the foam forming of quartz paper

Compared with traditional papermaking, foam forming is a new papermaking technology that uses foam instead of water to disperse fibres, which can effectively solve the problem of poor evenness of ceramic paper, but the instability of foam itself affects the application of foam forming technology. Herein, a highly stable foaming agent for foam forming technology was prepared via physical reaction of lauryl dimethyl amine oxide (OB-2) with filamentous nanocellulose (cellulose nanofiber (CNF-C) and bacterial cellulose (BC)). Then, the quartz paper was prepared by foam forming technology. Firstly, hydrogen bond interactions between hydroxyl groups of the filamentous nanocellulose and hydrophilic moieties on OB-2 enabled the formation of a 3D nanonetwork layer on the surface of the bubble, which extended the half-life of the bubble and effectively prevented the bubble from bursting or coalescing. Then, the foam was extruded and cracked, and the filamentous nanocellulose was retained on the quartz fibres to prepare filamentous nanocellulose/quartz fibre paper by foam forming technology. The quartz paper exhibited excellent evenness and mechanical properties. In conclusion, the research of foam forming technology is of great significance to the application and development of special paper.

High-Temperature Aroma Mitigation and Fragrance Analysis of Ethyl Cellulose/Silica Hybrid Microcapsules for Scented Fabrics

Microencapsulation can improve the thermal stability of a fragrance, and composite wall materials are one way to further improve the thermal stability of microcapsules. This paper presents a facile approach for cotton fabric coatings by using cellulose/silica hybrid microcapsules. Lavender fragrance oil-loaded cellulose/silica hybrid microcapsules were one-step synthesized via emulsion solvent diffusion. The prepared microcapsules were found to be spherical in shape with a particle size distribution between 500 to 1000 nm. Due to the slow releasing of lavender fragrance oil in the capsules, the fragrance loss rate of (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES)-, triethoxy(3-glycidyloxypropyl)silane (GPTES)-, and (3-aercaptopropyl)trie-thoxysilane (MPTES)- modified cellulose/silica hybrid microcapsules are 25.2%, 35.1%, and 16.7% after six hours at 120 °C. E-nose and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GCMS) studies found that the fragranced cotton fabrics had good retention of characteristic aromas. It provides the basis for the application of the heating treatment of cotton fabrics in sterilization, bleaching, printing, and other processes.

Double-Encapsulated Microcapsules for the Adsorption to Cotton Fabrics

Double-encapsulated microcapsules (DEMs) were prepared and effectively adsorbed onto the cotton fabric surfaces during impregnation without crosslinking agents to obtain functional cotton fabrics. Specifically, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) showed two different molecules (lavender essence and dye indigo) were encapsulated into the microcapsules simultaneously, with loading capacity of 10% and 9.73%, respectively. The spherical shape of DEMs was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) and average particle sizes were about 617 nm, as measured by dynamic light scattering (DLS). According to the results of IR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) experiments, DEMs was combined with cotton fabrics by hydrogen bond. The superior thermal stability of microcapsules and functional cotton fabrics was also demonstrated. The adsorption behavior and mechanism of microparticles onto cotton fabrics were further examined by chemical property characterization in combination with adsorption kinetic model. The kinetic adsorption process included three stages: fast adsorption, slow adsorption rate, and adsorption equilibrium. Finally, the good color fastness of the functional cotton fabrics was demonstrated by the tests of rubbing and accelerated laundering. Herein, this study will be beneficial to the development of functional cotton fabrics-based materials.
