Knowledge domain and research trends for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus and nutrition from 2011 to 2021: a bibliometric analysis

Objective

Nutrient management and lifestyle changes are the frontlines of treatment for all pregnant women diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM). This study aimed to identify the global research architecture, trends, and hotpots of GDM and nutrition.

Methods

We obtained publications from the sub-databases of Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Science Citation Index sourced from the Web of Science Core Collection database on January 4, 2022, using publication years between 2011 and 2021. CiteSpace software, VOSviewer, and Microsoft Excel 2019 were used to conduct the bibliometric analyses.

Results

A growing publication trend was observed for GDM and nutrition, and this field has great potential. More GDM and nutrition research has been conducted in developed countries than developing countries. The top three authors with a high publication frequency, co-citations, and a good h-index were from the United States. There were the four studies of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or meta-analyses of RCTs, as well as one review in the top five items of cited literature. Keywords were categorized into four clusters based on the keywords visualization.

Conclusion

It is important to strengthen the collaboration between nations of different economies to produce more high-quality research on GDM and nutrition. It may be beneficial to further study the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of GDM based on current results to provide a new perspective on GDM and nutrition.

The Effect of Glucose Metabolism and Breastfeeding on the Intestinal Microbiota of Newborns of Women with Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a pregnancy complication in which women without previously diagnosed diabetes develop chronic hyperglycemia during gestation. The diet and lifestyle of the mother during pregnancy as well as lactation have long-term effects on the child's health and development. Detection of early risk markers of adult-age chronic diseases that begin during prenatal life and the application of complex nutritional interventions at the right time may reduce the risk of these diseases. Newborns adapt to the ectopic environment by developing intestinal immune homeostasis. Adequate initial colonization of bacteria is necessary for sufficient development of intestinal immunity. The environmental determinant of adequate colonization is breast milk. Although a developing newborn is capable of producing an immune response, the effector immune component requires bacterial stimulation. Breast milk stimulates the proliferation of a well-balanced and diverse microbiota, which initially influences the switch from an intrauterine TH2 predominant to a TH1/TH2 balanced response and the activation of T-regulatory cells by breast milk-stimulated specific organisms (Bifidobacteria, Lactobacillus, and Bacteroides). Breastfeeding in newborns of mothers with diabetes mellitus regulates the adequate immune response of the newborn and prevents diseases of the neonatal and postnatal period.

LncRNA-SNX17 Promotes HTR-8/SVneo Proliferation and Invasion Through miR-517a/IGF-1 in the Placenta of Diabetic Macrosomia

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has become a worldwide problem in recent years. Macrosomia, a primary consequence of GDM, has short-term and life-long consequences in the offspring of mothers with GDM. Our previous study showed that miR-517a was dysregulated in placenta and plasma of fetal growth restriction through inhibiting invasion of trophoblast and might be closely related with the regulation of birth weight by the placenta. To further investigate the mechanism of miR-517a, we conducted genome-wide microarray profile of lncRNAs. lncRNA-SNX17 was found to be significantly upregulated in the placenta of diabetic macrosomia by qRT-PCR, and the expression of miR-517a and IGF-1 were measured by qRT-PCR and Western blot. Interestingly, significant inverse correlations of the miR-517a with both lncRNA-SNX17 and IGF-1 expression were revealed in the placenta of diabetic macrosomia. Bioinformatic prediction also revealed that both lncRNA-SNX17 and IGF-1 possessed binding sites for miR-517a, which were then confirmed by luciferase report assay. LncRNA-SNX17 overexpression reduced the expression of miR-517a and increased the IGF-1 expression in HTR-8/SVneo human trophoblast cell line and thus enhanced the proliferation of HTR-8/SVneo. The enhancement of HTR-8/SVneo proliferation by lncRNA-SXN17 could be nullified by co-transfection of miR-517a mimics. The data suggested that lncRNA-SNX17 might promote the trophoblast proliferation through miR-517a/IGF-1 pathway and might play a role in the placentation of diabetic macrosomia.
