Abstract
SCOPE The uremic toxin trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) accumulates in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is associated with its progression, cardiovascular disease, and other complications. The gut microbiota produces TMAO from substrates mainly found in red meat, eggs, and dairy. However, some saltwater fish also contain high levels of TMAO. Although fish consumption is generally linked to beneficial effects, its effects on CKD patients require further research. METHODS AND RESULTS This study compares the effect of red meat and cod fish intake on TMAO plasma levels in CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD). Participants received a single animal protein source (red meat vs. cod fish) for lunch and dinner for four consecutive days (each intervention), with a 2-week washout period in between. TMAO plasma levels were analyzed using LC-MS/MS. All 14 patients concluded the red meat intervention, while one refused to participate in the fish intervention. No significant difference in TMAO plasma levels was found post-red meat (p = 0.21) or fish intervention (p = 0.91), as well as between groups (p = 0.43). CONCLUSION In this study, 4 days of red meat and cod fish intake did not significantly impact TMAO levels in HD patients, while other factors may be associated with their circulating levels.

Abstract
Background Female pelvic peritoneal adhesions (FPPA) represent a significant global health burden. Dietary habits play a crucial role in health outcomes, yet their influence on FPPA remains unclear. This study aims to explore the bidirectional causal relationships between 72 eating habits and FPPA using sex-stratified Mendelian randomization (MR). Methods We employed a bidirectional MR approach, utilizing single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) significantly associated with 72 different eating habits as instrumental variables. The causal relationships were assessed using five MR methods, including inverse variance weighting (IVW). After Bonferroni correction, eating habits with a p-value < 0.05 were considered to have a significant causal relationship with FPPA. For those habits with significant associations, reverse MR was conducted to assess potential reverse causality. Sensitivity analyses, including IVW, MR-Egger, and leave-one-out tests, were performed to ensure the robustness of the results. Results Before Bonferroni correction, five eating habits showed potential associations with FPPA, including non-oily fish intake (OR: 0.989, 95% CI: 0.982-0.995, p=0.000521), side salad intake: OR 1.003 (95% CI: 1.001-1.006), p=0.007779, poultry intake: OR 1.005 (95% CI: 1.001-1.009), p=0.018016, spirits intake: OR 1.010 (95% CI: 1.001-1.019), p=0.036152, hard cheese intake: OR 0.995 (95% CI: 0.991-1.000), p=0.043784. After correction, only non-oily fish intake remained significantly associated with a lower risk of FPPA. No reverse causal relationship was observed between non-oily fish intake and FPPA, and sensitivity analyses revealed no abnormalities, further confirming the robustness of the findings. Discussion Our study identifies non-oily fish intake as a protective dietary factor against FPPA, with no evidence of reverse causality. These findings highlight the importance of dietary interventions in managing FPPA risk and suggest potential avenues for future research and public health strategies.

Abstract
Background: Evidence about the associations between Cantonese dietary patterns and mortality is scarce. We examined the prospective association of the dietary pattern with all-cause, cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in older Chinese. Methods: We included 19 598 participants of a Guangzhou Biobank cohort study aged 50+ years, who were recruited from 2003 to 2006 and followed up until July, 2022. The diet was assessed by using a 300-item validated food frequency questionnaire. The food items were collapsed into 27 food groups. Factor analysis (FA) was used to identify dietary patterns. Multivariable Cox regression produced hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for mortality. Results: During 305 410 person-years, 4966 deaths including 1971 CVD, 1565 cancer and 1436 other-causes occurred. Four dietary patterns were identified by FA. No association of the vegetable-based dietary pattern with all-cause, CVD and cancer mortality was found. Compared with the lowest quartile of the healthy Cantonese dietary pattern score, the highest quartile showed lower risks of all-cause (HR 0.86, 95% CI 0.80-0.94) and CVD mortality (HR 0.84, 95% CI 0.72-0.97). The highest quartile of the nut and fruit dietary pattern showed lower risks of all-cause (HR 0.92, 95% CI 0.85-0.99) and CVD mortality (HR 0.82, 95% CI 0.72-0.93), while the unhealthy western dietary pattern was associated with a higher risk of all-cause (HR 1.10, 95% CI 1.01-1.19) and cerebrovascular disease mortality (HR 1.28, 95% CI 1.03-1.58). Conclusion: We have first identified four dietary patterns based on the Cantonese cuisine and found that healthy Cantonese and nut and fruit dietary patterns were associated with lower risks of all-cause and CVD mortality, whereas the unhealthy western dietary pattern was associated with a higher risk of all-cause and cerebrovascular disease mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Sichuan cuisine is characterized by high salt and oil content. We aimed to evaluate the effects of the Sichuan cuisine version of Chinese heart-healthy diet (CHH diet-SC) on blood pressure reduction among hypertensive adults. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN The Chinese heart-healthy diet (CHH) trial was a multicenter randomized controlled feeding trial among Chinese hypertensive people. We conducted a secondary analysis of the CHH trial using data from the Sichuan center in Southwest China. Fifty-three people aged 25 to 75 years with a mean systolic blood pressure (SBP) between 130 and 159 mmHg were enrolled. Eligible participants underwent a 1-week run-in period with the typical local diet and were randomized 1:1 to consume the CHH diet-SC (n=27) or typical local diet (n=26) for the next 4-week. The primary outcome was the net change in SBP, the secondary outcomes included diastolic blood pressure (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and the rate of BP control. RESULTS Compared with the control group, the CHH diet-SC decreased cooking salt, oil, and red meat content and increased inclusion of whole grains, fruits, seafood, low-fat dairy, soybean, and nuts; the SBP experienced reductions of 7.54, 8.60, 9.14, and 10.1 mmHg at the end of weeks 1 through 4; the DBP was reduced 4.01 mmHg at week 4; the MAP was significantly reduced 6.02 mmHg finally; and rate of BP control significantly increased (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Adoption of the CHH diet-SC for 4 weeks can significantly reduce BP and increase the rate of BP control in hypertensive adults.

Abstract
Introduction Healthy diets reduce the risk of several non-communicable diseases (NCDs) from diabetes to heart disease and hypertension to cancer. Given their busy lifestyles, it is difficult for individuals to routinely prepare healthy food. Therefore, healthy and ready meal products have been developed and commercially launched in Thailand. Objectives Considering ready and healthy meals as an innovative product line in the Thai market, the aim of this study was to identify the factors that influence NCD patients to adopt this product innovation. Methods This study used a mixed-methods approach based on Roger's model of innovation adoption. Two hundred and twenty NCD patients completed a questionnaire regarding their expectations towards healthy meal products. In-depth interviews were conducted with 20 respondents to explore the underlying reasons behind their scoring decisions in the questionnaires. Results The findings revealed that the highest rated items were the expectation that healthy meals reduce the severity of disease, help avoid high-cholesterol food, and comprise a variety of meal choices. Instead of celebrity marketing and corporate branding, the patients preferred healthy meals that are recommended by health professionals and produced by university research teams. The qualitative findings also demonstrated that most patients welcomed healthy menus as a preventive treatment, but still have concerns regarding the availability and quality of the products. Conclusion This study reveals the expectations of prospective consumers, specifically NCD patients, towards healthy and ready meal products. It adds key information for food producers, health professionals, and policymakers to foster healthy food innovation, especially in the context of emerging economies like Thailand where healthy food choices are limited.

Abstract
Malnutrition and food insecurity have significant social and economic impacts in small island developing states, such as the Solomon Islands. Enhancing the domestic supply of fish, the main source of local protein, can contribute to improved nutrition and food security. This research aimed to improve understanding of the policy interface between the fisheries and health sectors and identify opportunities to strengthen fish supply chain policy to improve domestic (particularly urban) access to fish in the Solomon Islands. The study design drew on theories of policy learning and policy change and analysed policies using a consumption-oriented supply chain approach. Interviews were conducted with 12 key informants in the Solomon Islands, and 15 policy documents were analysed. Analysis of policy documents and interview data indicated that there were strengths as well as opportunities in the existing policy context. In particular, community-based fisheries management approaches and explicit recognition of the links between fisheries and nutrition were key strengths. Challenges included gaps in implementation, variations in capacities across government actors and communities, and limited attention to domestic monitoring and enforcement. Improving the effectiveness of resource management efforts may result in sustainable outcomes for both livelihoods and health, which will accomplish priorities at the national and sub-national levels and support the achievement of the Solomon Islands' commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Abstract
The term 'superfoods', used frequently with marketing purposes, is usually associated with foodstuffs with beneficial health properties. 'Superfoods' appears in many information sources, including digital media. The information they provide is easily accessible for consumers through Internet search engines. The objective of this work is to investigate the data that web pages offer to consumers and their accuracy according to current scientific knowledge. The two main search engines were utilized for English language websites search, introducing the term 'superfoods'. In total, 124 search results were found. After applying the selection criteria, 45 web pages were studied. A total of 136 foods were considered as 'superfoods' by sites; 10 of them (kale, spinach, salmon, blueberries, avocado, chia, walnuts, beans, fermented milks and garlic) were mentioned on at least 15 sites. Nutritional and healthy properties displayed on sites were compared to scientific information. In conclusion, websites present the information in a very simplified manner and it is generally not wrong. However, they should offer to consumers comprehensible information without raising false expectations regarding health benefits. In any case, 'superfoods' consumption can have salutary effects as part of a balanced diet.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the most common non-communicable diseases causing 18.6 million deaths worldwide. Several studies have revealed that seafood consumption has a protective effect against CVD. This study investigated the correlation between CVD and seafood intake based on a 10-year follow-up of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES). The study population, which included 6565 adults age, 55.65 (±8.68), was divided into seafood intake-based tertiles. CVD included myocardial infarction, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, cerebrovascular disease, and peripheral vascular disease. At baseline, participants with low seafood intake also had low eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) intakes. Prospectively, hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for CVD were analyzed using Cox proportional hazards regression models. Seafood intake exhibited a significantly inverse relationship with the cumulative CVD incidence over 10 years regardless of sex (women: log-rank test p < 0.001 and men: log-rank test p < 0.0401). The longitudinal association of low seafood intake with the CVD risk was significantly stronger in female participants after adjusting for confounding variables (HR (95% confidence interval (CI)) = 0.718 (0.519−0.993) p-trend = 0.043). These results suggested that seafood consumption potentially ameliorates CVD risk in middle-aged adults.

Abstract
Marine ascidian is becoming one of the main sources of an antitumor drug that has shown high bioactivity and extensive application in cancer treatment. Halocynthia roretzi, an edible marine sea squirt, has been demonstrated to have various kinds of biological activities, such as anti-diabetic, anti-hypertension, and enhancing immunity. In this study, we reported that aqueous extracts from the edible parts of H. roretzi presented significantly inhibiting the efficiency on HepG-2 cell viability. The separate mixed compound exhibited strong effects of inhibitory proliferation and induced apoptosis via the generation of ROS along with the concurrent loss of mitochondrial membrane potential on tumor cells. Furthermore, we found that there existed a significantly synergistic effect of the ascidian-extracted compound mixture with the anti-cancer drug doxorubicin. In the presence of the extracts from H. roretzi, the dose of doxorubicin at the cellular level could be reduced by a half dose. The extracts were further divided by semipreparative-HPLC and the active ingredients were identified as a mixture of fatty amide, which was composed of hexadecanamide, stearamide, and erucamide by UHPLC-MS/MS. Our results suggest that the potential toxicity of ascidian H. roretzi in tumor cells, and the compounds extracted from H. roretzi could be potentially utilized on functional nutraceuticals or as an adjunct in combination with chemotherapy.
