A Linear Model to Describe Branching and Allometry in Root Architecture

Study on the Shape Characteristics and the Allometry of Phalaenopsis Leaves for Greenhouse Management

Phalaenopsis orchids are highly economical ornamental potted plants. Controlling their production schedule requires information on the leaf development characteristics of the orchids. Phalaenopsis leaves affect the plant's photosynthesis, respiration, and transpiration. The leaf growth conditions can serve as a development index for greenhouse management. The use of the growth characteristics of Phalaenopsis leaves as the basis for greenhouse cultivation and management needs to be studied. The allometry of Phalaenopsis leaves is worth studying. The goal of this research was to investigate the allometry of Phalaenopsis leaves and develop prediction models of the total leaf area. Then, these total leaf area models were developed and validated. In this study, five Phalaenopsis varieties (amabilis, Sin-Yuan beauty, Ruey Lish beauty, Ishin KHM1095, and Sogo F1091) were selected. Each sample had five mature leaves. The lengths, widths, and areas of the sequential leaves were measured, and then the length ratios, width ratios, and area ratios were calculated. The top and bottom models were used to calculate the total leaf areas. The results indicate that no significant differences could be found in the length ratios, width ratios, and area ratios of the sequential leaves from the same variety. However, significant differences were found in these leaf characteristics between different varieties. The observation of leaf growth characteristics can be used to provide useful information for Phalaenopsis management. Comparing the predictive criteria of the two models, the top model had a better predictive ability than the bottom model. From a practical viewpoint, measuring the top leaf area is easier than measuring the bottom leaf area in a greenhouse operation. Comparing the effects of the sample numbers on the predictive ability of the model, the sample number of 30 was sufficient to ensure the accuracy of the total leaf area measurements. We provide an easy and accurate method to measure the total leaf area of Phalaenopsis. The calculated values of total leaf areas can be incorporated into decision models for smart management.

Growth Patterns in Seedling Roots of the Pincushion Cactus Mammillaria Reveal Trends of Intra- and Inter-Specific Variation

Genetic mechanisms controlling root development are well-understood in plant model species, and emerging frontier research is currently dissecting how some of these mechanisms control root development in cacti. Here we show the patterns of root architecture development in a gradient of divergent lineages, from populations to species in Mammillaria. First, we show the patterns of variation in natural variants of the species Mammillaria haageana. Then we compare this variation to closely related species within the Series Supertexta in Mammillaria (diverging for the last 2.1 million years) in which M. haageana is inserted. Finally, we compared these patterns of variation to what is found in a set of Mammillaria species belonging to different Series (diverging for the last 8 million years). When plants were grown in controlled environments, we found that the variation in root architecture observed at the intra-specific level, partially recapitulates the variation observed at the inter-specific level. These phenotypic outcomes at different evolutionary time-scales can be interpreted as macroevolution being the cumulative outcome of microevolutionary phenotypic divergence, such as the one observed in Mammillaria accessions and species.

Analysis of the Static Behavior of a Single Tree on a Finite Element Model

This work deals with the innovated complex process of tree risk assessment, from precise geometrical tree shape acquisition to building and analyzing a finite element model under specified load. The acquisition of the 3D geometry of the tree was performed by means of terrestrial laser scanning. Obtained point cloud was optimized and additionally converted to a 3D CAD model, representing the bearing skeleton compound of trunk and main branches. For structural analysis purposes, a finite element model (FEM) was built in the form of beam structure fixed to the ground. Particular beams were defined by geometry, material properties of wood, and cross sections. An acoustic tomography was applied for determination of the precise cross section on investigated locations of an analysis model. Finite element analysis performed on the computational model shows the bearing capacity and deformations of the whole tree structure caused by combinations of load cases like self-weight and static equivalent of wind load. The results of the structural analysis called attention to potentially dangerous places within the tree structure with extreme node displacements or tensile stresses on beams. Thus, we observed a maximal horizontal displacement of 280.4 mm in node N34 and dangerous tensile stress in node N26, where it reaches +23.6 MPa. After filtering some beams with an abnormal cross section geometry, the finite element analysis of the whole tree structure showed the highest tensile stress of +8.8 MPa and highest compressive stress of −8.9 MPa. The suggested method can be applied generally for the prediction of potentially risky tree suspected of breakage and especially for monumental trees, where the presented method can be mostly applicable.
