The Use of Computational Methods for the Development of Molecularly Imprinted Polymers

Recent years have witnessed a dramatic increase in the use of theoretical and computational approaches in the study and development of molecular imprinting systems. These tools are being used to either improve understanding of the mechanisms underlying the function of molecular imprinting systems or for the design of new systems. Here, we present an overview of the literature describing the application of theoretical and computational techniques to the different stages of the molecular imprinting process (pre-polymerization mixture, polymerization process and ligand-molecularly imprinted polymer rebinding), along with an analysis of trends within and the current status of this aspect of the molecular imprinting field.

Bottlebrush Glycopolymers from 2-Oxazolines and Acrylamides for Targeting Dendritic Cell-Specific Intercellular Adhesion Molecule-3-Grabbing Nonintegrin and Mannose-Binding Lectin

Lectins are omnipresent carbohydrate binding proteins that are involved in a multitude of biological processes. Unearthing their binding properties is a powerful tool toward the understanding and modification of their functions in biological applications. Herein, we present the synthesis of glycopolymers with a brush architecture via a "grafting from" methodology. The use of a versatile 2-oxazoline inimer was demonstrated to open avenues for a wide range of 2-oxazoline/acrylamide bottle brush polymers utilizing aqueous Cu-mediated reversible deactivation radical polymerization (Cu-RDRP). The polymers in the obtained library were assessed for their thermal properties in aqueous solution and their binding toward the C-type animal lectins dendritic cell-specific intercellular adhesion molecule-3-grabbing nonintegrin (DC-SIGN) and mannose-binding lectin (MBL) via surface plasmon resonance spectrometry. The encapsulation properties of a hydrophobic drug-mimicking compound demonstrated the potential use of glyco brush copolymers in biological applications.

Progressive Applications of Hyperbranched Polymer Based on Diarylamine: Antimicrobial, Anti-Biofilm and Anti-Aerobic Corrosion

New generations of hyperbranched aramids were synthesized from diarylamine and methyl acrylate using an AB₂ monomer approach in a straightforward one-pot preparation. The chemical structure of hyperbranched Phenylenediamine/Methyl Acrylate HB(PDMA was confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (¹HNMR) spectroscopy. In addition, the particle’s size and distribution were recorded using Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS). Moreover, the synthesized HB(PDMA)s displayed broad-spectrum antimicrobial activities against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as yeast strains and anti-biofilm activity where the highest activity was attributed to HB(PDMA)G₄ at the lowest Minimum Inhibitory, Minimum Bactericidal, and Fungicidal Concentrations (MIC, MBC, and MFC, respectively). Furthermore, the HB(PDMA)s expressed anti-bacterial activity against isolated Pseudomonas sp. (R301) at a salinity of 35,000 ppm (NaCl). In addition, they revealed different corrosion inhibition efficiencies at the cultivated medium salinity at the estimated minimum bactericidal concentrations. The highest metal corrosion inhibition efficiencies were 59.5 and 94.3% for HB(PDMA)G₄ at the Minimum Bactericidal Concentrations (MBCs) and two times Minimum Bactericidal Concentrations (2XMBCs), respectively, in comparison to both negative and positive controls.

Biodegradation Pattern of Glycopolymer Based on D-Mannose Oligomer and Hydroxypropyl Acrylate

Glycopolymers are polymers with sugar moieties which display biodegradable and/or biocompatible character. They have emerged as an environmentally-friendly solution to classical synthetic polymers and have attracted significant research interest in the past years. Herein, we present the synthesis of a D-mannose based glycopolymer with biodegradable features. The glycopolymer was synthesized by radical copolymerization between a D-mannose oligomer bearing polymerizable double bonds and 2-hydroxypropyl acrylate, in a weight ratio of 1:2. The copolymerization kinetics was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and the activation energy of the process was comparatively assessed by Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa methods. The obtained glycopolymer displayed good thermal behavior, fact proven by thermogravimetrical (TG) analysis and it was submitted to biodegradation inside a bioreactor fed with water from the Bega River as the source of microbial inoculum. The glycopolymer sample degraded by approximately 60% in just 23 days. The biodegradation pattern of the glycopolymer was successfully fitted against a modified sigmoidal exponential function. The kinetic model coefficients and its accuracy were calculated using Matlab and the correlation coefficient is more than promising. The changes inside glycopolymer structure after biodegradation were studied using TG and FTIR analyses, which revealed that the sugar moiety is firstly attacked by the microbial consortia as nutrient source for proliferation.
