Enhancement of Rhodamine B Degradation by Ag Nanoclusters-Loaded g-C₃N₄ Nanosheets

Role of transition metals in coinage metal nanoclusters for the remediation of toxic dyes in aqueous systems

A difficult issue in chemistry and materials science is to create metal compounds with well-defined components. Metal nanoclusters, particularly those of coinage groups (Cu, Ag, and Au), have received considerable research interest in recent years owing to the availability of atomic-level precision via joint experimental and theoretical methods, thus revealing the mechanisms in diverse nano-catalysts and functional materials. The textile sector significantly contributes to wastewater containing pollutants such as dyes and chemical substances. Textile and fabric manufacturing account for about 7 × 105 tons of wastewater annually. Approximately one thousand tons of dyes used in textile processing and finishing has been recorded as being discharged into natural streams and water bodies. Owing to the widespread environmental concerns, research has been conducted to develop absorbents that are capable of removing contaminants and heavy metals from water bodies using low-cost technology. Considering this idea, we reviewed coinage metal nanoclusters for azo and cationic dye degradation. Fluorometric and colorimetric techniques are used for dye degradation using coinage metal nanoclusters. Few reports are available on dye degradation using silver nanoclusters; and some of them are discussed in detailed herein to demonstrate the synergistic effect of gold and silver in dye degradation. Mostly, the Rhodamine B dye is degraded using coinage metals. Silver nanoclusters take less time for degradation than gold and copper nanoclusters. Mostly, H2O2 is used for degradation in gold nanoclusters. Still, all coinage metal nanoclusters have been used for the degradation due to suitable HOMO-LUMO gap, and the adsorption of a dye onto the surface of the catalyst results in the exchange of electrons and holes, which leads to the oxidation and reduction of the adsorbed dye molecule. Compared to other coinage metal nanoclusters, Ag/g-C3N4 nanoclusters displayed an excellent degradation rate constant with the dye Rhodamine B (0.0332 min-1). The behavior of doping transition metals in coinage metal nanoclusters is also reviewed herein. In addition, we discuss the mechanistic grounds for degradation, the fate of metal nanoclusters, anti-bacterial activity of nanoclusters, toxicity of dyes, and sensing of dyes.

A novel competitive fluorescence colorimetric dual-mode immunosensor for detecting ochratoxin A based on the synergistically enhanced peroxidase-like activity of AuAg NCs-SPCN nanocomposite

The sensitive and rapid detection of Ochratoxin A in foods is particularly urgent for ensuring human security due to its larger toxicity to the body. Herein, a novel competitive fluorescence colorimetric dual-mode immunosensor for detecting Ochratoxin A based on AuAg NCs-SPCN nanocomposite was designed and constructed. The synergistic effect of SPCN and AuAg NCs dramatically improved the nanozyme activity. The fluorescence intensity was enhanced due to the aggregation luminescence effect, and a new emission peak appeared at 440 nm to form a fluorescence signal. For colorimetric, H2O2 was effectively decomposed by AuAg NCs-SPCN to form ·OH groups and oxidize 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine to blue oxTMB. The dual-mode immunosensor showed a good linear relationship from 0.001 μg/L to 10 μg/L and the detection limits were 0.155 ng/L (fluorescence) and 0.213 ng/L (colorimetric). So, this dual-mode immunosensor would have a potential applicative prospect for sensitive detecting Ochratoxin A and other small molecules.

A portable architectonics of Al/carbon nitride/metal-organic frameworks anchored Ag nanoparticles for SERS detection and photocatalytic degradation of fungicide

In recent years, it is urgent to develop bi-functional materials for highly sensitive SERS detection and photocatalytic degradation of contaminants in water of fish pond. Herein, using 5-mercapto-1-methyltetrazole as the ligand, the tree-trunk like zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) is induced and in-situ grown on the surface of aluminum/flower carbon nitride (Al/f-C₃N₄). Then, AgNPs are tightly anchored in ZIF-8 of Al/f-C₃N₄/ZIF-8 by strong Ag-N and Ag-S bonds, and a portable architecture of Al/f-C₃N₄/ZIF-8/Ag is successfully prepared. Results indicate that the Al/f-C₃N₄/ZIF-8/Ag architecture exhibits excellent SERS activity and the detection limit can as low as 2.15 × 10^-11 mol⋅L^-1 for crystal violet (CV, a typical fungicide). Also, the Al/f-C₃N₄/ZIF-8/Ag substrate presents good photocatalytic activity for CV molecule, and the degradation efficiency reaches 98.58% after illumination for 90 min. This is mainly due to the good adsorption capacity of ZIF-8 which can enrich more CV molecules and pull them to "hot spots" generated by Ag in Al/f-C₃N₄/ZIF-8/Ag, and thus SERS response are enhanced significantly. Besides, the strong synergistic effect of f-C₃N₄, ZIF-8 and AgNPs is also important which facilitates the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. Thus, the designed portable and bi-functional substrate could be used as a potential material for the detection and removal of CV in practical application.

Rice Crust-Like ZnO/Ti3C2Tx MXene Hybrid Structures for Improved Photocatalytic Activity

Novel two-dimensional ZnO/Ti3C2Tx hybrid photocatalysts with modified surface areas were prepared using a simple calcination technique. The microstructures, crystalline features, and bonding states of the ZnO structure-covered Ti3C2Tx MXenes were closely characterized using various tools. The photoluminescence intensity of the hybrid photocatalyst was greatly reduced compared to the pristine ZnO, while its Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area increased by more than 100 times. Under solar light illumination, the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of the hybrid photocatalyst for organic pollutants (MO, RhB) appeared to be three-fold larger as compared to pristine ZnO. The superb photocatalytic performance of the photocatalyst was attributed to several factors, such as ideal band alignment, Schottky barrier formation, and large surface area. Moreover, the ZnO/Ti3C2Tx hybrid photocatalyst showed excellent cycling stability. These results suggest that the novel hybrid structure may be a potential candidate for removing organic pollutants in wastewater.

Fe-Doped g-C3N4: High-Performance Photocatalysts in Rhodamine B Decomposition

Herein, Fe-doped C3N4 high-performance photocatalysts, synthesized by a facile and cost effective heat stirring method, were investigated systematically using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area measurement, X-ray photoelectron (XPS), UV-Vis diffusion reflectance (DRS) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The results showed that Fe ions incorporated into a g-C3N4 nanosheet in both +3 and +2 oxidation states and in interstitial configuration. Absorption edge shifted slightly toward the red light along with an increase of absorbance in the wavelength range of 430-570 nm. Specific surface area increased with the incorporation of Fe into g-C3N4 lattice, reaching the highest value at the sample doped with 7 mol% Fe (FeCN7). A sharp decrease in PL intensity with increasing Fe content is an indirect evidence showing that electron-hole pair recombination rate decreased. Interestingly, Fe-doped g-C3N4 nanosheets present a superior photocatalytic activity compared to pure g-C3N4 in decomposing RhB solution. FeCN7 sample exhibits the highest photocatalytic efficiency, decomposing almost completely RhB 10 ppm solution after 30 min of xenon lamp illumination with a reaction rate approximately ten times greater than that of pure g-C3N4 nanosheet. This is in an agreement with the BET measurement and photoluminescence result which shows that FeCN7 possesses the largest specific surface area and low electron-hole recombination rate. The mechanism of photocatalytic enhancement is mainly explained through the charge transfer processes related to Fe2+/Fe3+ impurity in g-C3N4 crystal lattice.

Functionalization of Molecularly Imprinted Polymer Microspheres for the Highly Selective Removal of Contaminants from Aqueous Solutions and the Analysis of Food-Grade Fish Samples

The proliferation of pollution in aquatic environments has become a growing concernand calls for the development of novel adsorbents capable of selectively removing notorious andrecalcitrant pollutants from these ecosystems. Herein, a general strategy was developed for thesynthesis and functionalization of molecularly imprinted polymer microspheres (MIPs) that couldbe optimized to possess a significant adsorption selectivity to an organic pollutant in aqueousmedia, in addition to a high adsorption capacity. Considering that the molecular imprinting alonewas far from satisfactory to produce a high-performance MIPs-based adsorbent, further structuralengineering and surface functionalization were performed in this study. Although the more carboxylgroups on the surfaces of the MIPs enhanced the adsorption rate and capacity toward an organicpollutant through electrostatic interactions, they did not strengthen the adsorption selectivity in aproportional manner. Through a systematic study, the optimized sample exhibiting both impressiveselectivity and capacity for the adsorption of the organic pollutant was found to possess a smallparticle size, a high specific surface area, a large total pore volume, and an appropriate amount ofsurface carboxyl groups. While the pseudo-second-order kinetic model was found to better describethe process of the adsorption onto the surface of MIPs as compared to the pseudo-first-order kineticmodel, neither Langmuir nor Freundlich isothermal model could be used to well fit the isothermaladsorption data. Increased temperature facilitated the adsorption of the organic pollutant onto theMIPs, as an endothermic process. Furthermore, the optimized MIPs were also successfully employedas a stationary phase for the fabrication of a molecularly imprinted solid phase extraction column,with which purchased food-grade fish samples were effectively examined.
