Highly conductive tissue-like hydrogel interface through template-directed assembly

Over the past decade, conductive hydrogels have received great attention as tissue-interfacing electrodes due to their soft and tissue-like mechanical properties. However, a trade-off between robust tissue-like mechanical properties and good electrical properties has prevented the fabrication of a tough, highly conductive hydrogel and limited its use in bioelectronics. Here, we report a synthetic method for the realization of highly conductive and mechanically tough hydrogels with tissue-like modulus. We employed a template-directed assembly method, enabling the arrangement of a disorder-free, highly-conductive nanofibrous conductive network inside a highly stretchable, hydrated network. The resultant hydrogel exhibits ideal electrical and mechanical properties as a tissue-interfacing material. Furthermore, it can provide tough adhesion (800 J/m²) with diverse dynamic wet tissue after chemical activation. This hydrogel enables suture-free and adhesive-free, high-performance hydrogel bioelectronics. We successfully demonstrated ultra-low voltage neuromodulation and high-quality epicardial electrocardiogram (ECG) signal recording based on in vivo animal models. This template-directed assembly method provides a platform for hydrogel interfaces for various bioelectronic applications.

Functionalization Strategies of PEDOT and PEDOT:PSS Films for Organic Bioelectronics Applications

Organic bioelectronics involves the connection of organic semiconductors with living organisms, organs, tissues, cells, membranes, proteins, and even small molecules. In recent years, this field has received great interest due to the development of all kinds of devices architectures, enabling the detection of several relevant biomarkers, the stimulation and sensing of cells and tissues, and the recording of electrophysiological signals, among others. In this review, we discuss recent functionalization approaches for PEDOT and PEDOT:PSS films with the aim of integrating biomolecules for the fabrication of bioelectronics platforms. As the choice of the strategy is determined by the conducting polymer synthesis method, initially PEDOT and PEDOT:PSS films preparation methods are presented. Later, a wide variety of PEDOT functionalization approaches are discussed, together with bioconjugation techniques to develop efficient organic-biological interfaces. Finally, and by making use of these approaches, the fabrication of different platforms towards organic bioelectronics devices is reviewed.

Vapor phase polymerization for electronically conductive nanopaper based on bacterial cellulose/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)

Eco-friendly conductive polymer nanocomposites have garnered attention as an effective alternative for conventional conductive nanocomposites. Here, we report the fabrication and optimization of flexible, self-standing, and conductive bacterial cellulose/poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene) (BC/PEDOT) nanocomposites using the vapor phase polymerization (VPP) method. Eco-friendly bacterial cellulose (BC) is used as a flexible matrix, and the highly conductive PEDOT polymer is introduced into the BC matrix to achieve electronic conductivity. We demonstrate that vapor phase polymerized BC/PEDOT composites exhibit more than 10 times lower sheet resistance (18 Ω/square) compared to solution polymerized BC/PEDOT (188 Ω/square). The resultant BC/PEDOT fabricated could be bent up to 100 times and completely rolled up without a notable decrease in electronic performance. Moreover, bent BC/PEDOT films enable operation of a green light-emitting diode (LED) light, indicating the flexibility and stability of conductive BC/PEDOT films. Overall, this study suggests a strategy for the development of eco-friendly, flexible, and conductive nanocomposite films.
