Synthesis of Modified Starch/Polyvinyl Alcohol Composite for Treating Textile Wastewater

Phosphate adsorption from water and wastewater using non-devulcanised and devulcanised tyre rubber

The secondary use of tyre rubber is a potentially sustainable environmental solution. However, the sorption properties of used-tyre rubber have not yet been fully investigated. In this study, the rubber type (vulcanised or devulcanised part-worn tyre rubber) that can sorb phosphate phosphorus from aqueous solutions or wastewater more effectively is determined. The capacity of granules (0.3-1.0 mm in diameter) of non-devulcanised ground tyre rubber and uniquely chemically devulcanised rubber to adsorb phosphorus is evaluated under laboratory conditions. The results show that under the filtration of an aqueous solution or biologically treated wastewater at a flow rate of 0.75 m/h (1.2 L/h), 1 g of the devulcanised rubber medium accumulates 5.16 mg of phosphorus, which is five times more than that accumulated by the non-devulcanised rubber medium. The surface structure of the non-devulcanised rubber medium is more suitable for the sorption of devulcanised rubber granules. The sorption capacity and effectiveness of non-devulcanised rubber for phosphorus removal are more favourable compared with those of the tested natural and waste-prepared sorbents. Further research into this material as a medium for filter layers and for accumulating drainage should be conducted. The findings of this study are important for addressing issues associated with the secondary use of tyre rubber.

Surface Modification of Attapulgite by Grafting Cationic Polymers for Treating Dye Wastewaters

In this study, the cationic polymer poly-epichlorohydrin-dimethylamine was immobilized on natural attapulgite to improve the dye adsorption capacities. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis, zeta potential analysis, and particle size analysis were used to determine the characteristics of modified attapulgite. Results showed that the poly-epichlorohydrin-dimethylamine had been successfully grafted onto the surface of attapulgite without altering its crystal structure. After cationic modification, the specific surface area of attapulgite obviously decreased, and its surface zeta potentials possessed positive values in the pH range from 3 to 11. The cation-modified attapulgite displayed high adsorption capacities for anionic dyes, and its maximum adsorption capacities were 237.4 mg/g for Reactive Black 5 and 228.3 mg/g for Reactive Red 239; this is corroborated by Langmuir’s isotherm studies. It was demonstrated that the two reactive dyes could be 100% removed from effluents when cation-modified attapulgite was used in column operation modes. Its treatment capacities were more than three times larger than that of activated carbon. The regeneration study verified better utilization and stability of the fabricated adsorbent in column operation. This work has conclusively confirmed the potential of the new modified attapulgite for effectively treating dye wastewaters.

Preparation and Optimization of Water-Soluble Cationic Sago Starch with a High Degree of Substitution Using Response Surface Methodology

Modification and characterizations of cationic sago starch with 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride (CHPTAC) prepared via etherification reaction was reported in this study. The optimization of cationic sago starch modification was performed by utilizing the combination of response surface methodology and central composite design (RSM/CCD). The effect of each variable and the interaction between the three variables, the concentration of CHPTAC, concentration of the catalyst NaOH, and the reaction times on the degree of substitution (DS) of the product were investigated and modeled. Moderate conditions were employed and a water-soluble cationic sago starch with high DS value was obtained. Based on RSM, the highest DS = 1.195 was obtained at optimum conditions: 0.615 mol of CHPTAC concentration (CHPTAC/SS = 5), 30% w/v NaOH, and 5 h reaction time, at 60 °C reaction temperature. Furthermore, the cationic sago starch was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, FTIR, X-ray diffraction, XRD, and field emission scanning electron microscopy, FESEM.

Removal of Cu(II) by Fixed-Bed Columns Using Alg-Ch and Alg-ChS Hydrogel Beads: Effect of Operating Conditions on the Mass Transfer Zone

The removal of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions at a pH of 5.0 was carried out using fixed-bed columns packed with alginate-chitosan (Alg-Ch) or alginate-chitosan sulfate (Alg-ChS) hydrogel beads. The effect of the initial Cu(II) concentration, flow rate, pH, and height of the column on the amount of Cu removed by the column at the breakpoint and at the exhaustion point is reported. The pH of the solution at the column's exit was initially higher than that at the entrance, and then decreased slowly. This pH increase was attributed to proton transfer from the aqueous solution to the amino and COO^- groups of the hydrogel. The effect of operating conditions on the mass transfer zone (MTZ) and the length of the unused bed (H_LUB) is reported. At the lower flow rate and lower Cu(II) concentration used, the MTZ was completely developed and the column operated efficiently; by increasing column height, the MTZ has a better opportunity to develop fully. Experimental data were fitted to the fixed-bed Thomas model using a non-linear regression analysis and a good correspondence between experimental and Thomas model curves was observed.
