Synthesis of a New Polyanion Possessing Dense 1,2,3-Triazole Backbone

Unveiling the ion sensing capabailities of 'click' derived chalcone-tailored 1,2,3-triazolic isomers for Pb(ii) and Cu(ii) ions: DFT analysis

In this study, two novel chalcone-derived 1,2,3-triazole-appended positional isomers (probe 6 and probe 9) were synthesized via the 'CuAAC' (Cu(i) - catalysed alkyne azide cycloaddition) methodology for the purpose of metal ion detection. The synthesized probes underwent characterization utilizing standard spectroscopic methodologies including FTIR, NMR (1H and 13C), and mass spectrometry. Subsequently, the sensing capabilities of these probes were explored using UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, wherein their selective recognition potential was established for Pb(ii) and Cu(ii), both of which can pose serious health hazards when prevalent in the environment above permissible limits. Both the probes exhibited fairly low limits of detection (LoD), determined as 5.69 μM and 6.55 μM in the case of probe 6 for Pb(ii) and Cu(ii) respectively; whereas the probe 9 exhibited an LoD of 5.06 μM and 7.52 μM for Pb(ii) and Cu(ii), respectively. The job's plot for the probe demonstrates the formation of a 1 : 1 complex between the metal and ligand. Furthermore, the interaction of the free probes with the metal ions in the metal-ligand complex was elucidated through 1H NMR analysis and validated theoretically using Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations with the B3LYP/6-311G++(d,p) and B3LYP/LANL2DZ basis sets for geometry optimization of the probes and their corresponding metal complexes. These findings offer a reliable approach to Cu(ii) and Pb(ii) ion detection and can be further used for the potential applications in environmental monitoring and analytical chemistry.

Fully Symmetric Cyclodextrin Polycarboxylates: How to Determine Reliable Protonation Constants from NMR Titration Data

Acid-base properties of cyclodextrins (CDs), persubstituted at C-6 by 3-mercaptopropionic acid, sualphadex (Suα-CD), subetadex (Suβ-CD) and sugammadex (Suγ-CD, the antidote of neuromuscular blocking steroids) were studied by ¹H NMR-pH titrations. For each CD, the severe overlap in protonation steps prevented the calculation of macroscopic pK_a values using the standard data fitting model. Considering the full symmetry of polycarboxylate structures, we reduced the number of unknown NMR parameters in the "Q-fitting" or the novel "equidistant macroscopic" evaluation approaches. These models already provided pK_a values, but some of them proved to be physically unrealistic, deceptively suggesting cooperativity in carboxylate protonations. The latter problem could be circumvented by adapting the microscopic site-binding (cluster expansion) model by Borkovec, which applies pairwise interactivity parameters to quantify the mutual basicity-decreasing effect of carboxylate protonations. Surprisingly, only a single averaged interactivity parameter could be calculated reliably besides the carboxylate 'core' microconstant for each CD derivative. The speciation of protonation isomers hence could not be resolved, but the optimized microscopic basicity parameters could be converted to the following sets of macroscopic pK_a values: 3.84, 4.35, 4.81, 5.31, 5.78, 6.28 for Suα-CD; 3.82, 4.31, 4.73, 5.18, 5.64, 6.06, 6.54 for Suβ-CD and 3.83, 4.28, 4.65, 5.03, 5.43, 5.81, 6.18, 6.64 for Suγ-CD. The pH-dependent charge of these compounds can now be accurately calculated, in support of designing new analytical methods to exploit their charge-dependent molecular recognition such as in cyclodextrin-aided chiral capillary electrophoresis.

Synthesis of New Thermoresponsive Polymers Possessing the Dense 1,2,3-Triazole Backbone

Thermoresponsive water-soluble polymers, aqueous solutions of which undergo lower critical solution temperature (LCST)-type phase separation, have been investigated in detail for several decades. To develop LCST-type thermoresponsive polymers with new polymer backbone, 4-azido-5-hexynamide (AHA) derivatives were designed as monomers for copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) polymerization. AHA derivatives carrying secondary amide side chains, that is, 4-azido-N-methyl-5-hexynamide (M), 4-azido-N-ethyl-5-hexynamide (E), and 4-azido-N-isopropyl-5-hexynamide (iP), were first synthesized and polymerized by CuAAC to obtain polymers (poly(M), poly(E), and poly(iP)). Contrary to our expectation, poly(M), poly(E), and poly(iP) were insoluble in water and many organic solvents presumably because of the formation of hydrogen bonding between the amide side chains or between the amide side chains and triazole residues in the backbone. Thus, AHA derivatives carrying tertiary amide side chains, that is, 4-azido-N,N-dimethyl-5-hexynamide (MM), 4-azido-N-ethyl-N-methyl-5-hexynamide (ME), 4-azido-N-isopropyl-N-methyl-5-hexynamide (MiP), and 4-azido-N,N-diethyl-5-hexynamide (EE), were also synthesized and polymerized to yield polymers (poly(MM), poly(ME), poly(MiP), and poly(EE)). These polymers were soluble in a number of common organic solvents. It is noteworthy that poly(MM) and poly(ME) were also soluble in water. The phase separation behavior of 1.0 wt % aqueous solutions of poly(MM) and poly(ME) was then investigated by transmittance measurements. These data indicated that poly(ME) was an LCST-type thermoresponsive polymer, whereas poly(MM) was not. A large hysteresis was observed in the transmittance measurements for the poly(ME) aqueous solution because of slow rehydration after phase separation. The phase separation behavior was investigated preliminarily by differential scanning calorimetry and ¹H NMR.
