Study on Thermal-Oxidative Aging Properties of Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Monomer Composites Filled with Silica and Carbon Nanotubes

Thermal Oxidative Aging and Service Life Prediction of Commercial Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Monomer Spacer Damping Composites for High-Voltage Transmission Lines

The aging behavior and life prediction of rubber composites are crucial for ensuring high-voltage transmission line safety. In this study, commercially available ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) spacer composites were chosen and investigated to elucidate the structure and performance changes under various aging conditions. The results showed an increased C=O peak intensity with increasing aging time, suggesting intensified oxidation of ethylene and propylene units. Furthermore, the surface morphology of commercial EPDM composites displayed increased roughness and aggregation after aging. Furthermore, hardness, modulus at 100% elongation, and tensile strength of commercial EPDM composites exhibited a general increase, while elongation at break decreased. Additionally, the damping performance decreased significantly after aging, with a 20.6% reduction in loss factor (20 °C) after aging at 100 °C for 672 h. With increasing aging time and temperature, the compression set gradually rose due to the irreversible movement of the rubber chains under stress. A life prediction model was developed based on a compression set to estimate the lifetime of rubber composites for spacer bars. The results showed that the product's life was 8.4 years at 20 °C. Therefore, the establishment of a life prediction model for rubber composites can provide valuable technical support for spacer product services.

Thermal Stability and Non-Isothermal Kinetic Analysis of Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Rubber Composite

The purpose of this study was to investigate the thermal stability and the decomposition kinetics of ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) composite samples loaded with and without lead powder (50, 100, and 200 phr lead) using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). TGA was carried out at different heating rates (5, 10, 20, and 30 °C/min) under inert conditions in the temperature range of 50-650 °C. Lead addition did not significantly change the onset temperature or peak position corresponding to the maximum decomposition rate of the first derivative of the TGA curve (DTGA) (onset at about 455 °C and T_m at about 475 °C). Peak separation for the DTGA curves indicated that the main decomposition region for EPDM, the host rubber, overlapped the main decomposition region for volatile components. The decomposition activation energy (E_a) and pre-exponent factor (A) were estimated using the Friedman (FM), Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS), and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) iso-conversional methods. Average activation energy values of around 231, 230, and 223 kJ/mol were obtained for the EPDM host composite using the FM, FWO, and KAS methods, respectively. For a sample loaded with 100 phr lead, the average activation energy values obtained via the same three methods were 150, 159, and 155 kJ/mole, respectively. The results obtained from the three methods were compared with results obtained using the Kissinger and Augis-Bennett/Boswell methods, and strong convergence was found among the results of the five methods. A significant change in the entropy of the sample was detected with the addition of lead powder. For the KAS method, the change in entropy, ΔS, was -3.7 for EPDM host rubber and -90 for a sample loaded with 100 phr lead, α = 0.5.

The Effect of Various Fillers on the Properties of Methyl Vinyl Silicone Rubber

Silicone rubber (SIR) has been widely used in electrical insulation fields, and the introduction of new materials is very important for the performance improvement of SIR composites. In this work, four different fillers, including aluminium hydroxide (ATH), yimonite (YMT), boron nitride (BN) and mica-filled SIR composites were prepared, and the vulcanization behavior, mechanical properties, insulation performance and hydrophobicity of the SIR composites were investigated and compared. Both BN- and mica-filled SIR composites showed excellent insulation performance, while the ATH-filled SIR composite exhibited the best mechanical properties with an elongation at break of 230% and a tensile strength of 2.9 MPa. The SIR/BN composite showed a breakdown strength of 29.2 kV/mm with a 5% failure rate. The addition of YMT deteriorated the insulation performance of SIR but improved the elongation at break and hydrophobicity, with an elongation at break increasing from 115% to 410% and the static contact angle improving from 109.8° to 115.6°.
