Antiseptic Polymer-Surfactant Complexes with Long-Lasting Activity against SARS-CoV-2

Double Photocrosslinked Responsive Hydrogels Based on Hydroxypropyl Guar

Double crosslinked hydrogels based on a biodegradable polymer were prepared by photocopolymerization of methacrylated hydroxypropyl guar (HPG-MA) and 3-acrylamidophenylboronic acid. Along with irreversible strong covalent crosslinks by methacrylic groups, these hydrogels contained labile boronate crosslinks formed as a result of the interaction of boronic acid with cis-diol moieties of HPG. These hydrogels demonstrated higher elasticity than HPG-MA hydrogels with only irreversible covalent crosslinks. Labile boronate crosslinks not only strengthened the hydrogels but also imparted to them pronounced responsive properties. It was demonstrated that the mechanical properties, the swelling behavior, as well as the uptake and release of some substances from the double crosslinked hydrogel were pH controlled. For instance, the hydrogels could release cationic disinfectant at a rate regulated by pH. Such photocrosslinkable in situ forming hydrogels are very promising for the production of smart coatings that release targeted substances at the desired rate.

Tuning Properties of Polyelectrolyte-Surfactant Associates in Two-Phase Microfluidic Flows

This work focuses on identifying and prioritizing factors that allow control of the properties of polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes in two-phase microfluidic confinement and provide advantages over synthesis of such complexes in macroscopic conditions. We characterize the impact of polymer and surfactant aqueous flow conditions on the formation of microscale droplets and fluid threads in the presence of an immiscible organic solvent. We perform an experimental and selected numerical analysis of fast supramolecular reactions in droplets and threads. The work offers a quantitative control over properties of polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes produced in two-phase confinement by varying capillary numbers and the ratio of aqueous and organic flowrates. We propose a combined thread-droplet mode to synthesize polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes. This mode allows the production of complexes in a broader size range of R ≈ 70-200 nm, as compared with synthesis in macroscopic conditions and the respective sizes R ≈ 100-120 nm. Due to a minimized impact of undesirable post-chip reactions and ordered microfluidic confinement conditions, the dispersity of microfluidic aggregates (PDI = 0.2-0.25) is lower than that of their analogs synthesized in bulk (PDI = 0.3-0.4). The proposed approach can be used for tailored synthesis of target drug delivery polyelectrolyte-surfactant systems in lab-on-chip devices for biomedical applications.

A Review on Novel Channel Materials for Particle Image Velocimetry Measurements-Usability of Hydrogels in Cardiovascular Applications

Particle image velocimetry (PIV) is an optical and contactless measurement method for analyzing fluid blood dynamics in cardiovascular research. The main challenge to visualization investigated in the current research was matching the channel material’s index of refraction (IOR) to that of the fluid. Silicone is typically used as a channel material for these applications, so optical matching cannot be proven. This review considers hydrogel as a new PIV channel material for IOR matching. The advantages of hydrogels are their optical and mechanical properties. Hydrogels swell more than 90 vol% when hydrated in an aqueous solution and have an elastic behavior. This paper aimed to review single, double, and triple networks and nanocomposite hydrogels with suitable optical and mechanical properties to be used as PIV channel material, with a focus on cardiovascular applications. The properties are summarized in seven hydrogel groups: PAMPS, PAA, PVA, PAAm, PEG and PEO, PSA, and PNIPA. The reliability of the optical properties is related to low IORs, which allow higher light transmission. On the other hand, elastic modulus, tensile/compressive stress, and nominal tensile/compressive strain are higher for multiple-cross-linked and nanocomposite hydrogels than single mono-cross-linked gels. This review describes methods for measuring optical and mechanical properties, e.g., refractometry and mechanical testing.
