Haptic Technology: Exploring Its Underexplored Clinical Applications-A Systematic Review

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES

Haptic technology has transformed interactions between humans and both tangible and virtual environments. Despite its widespread adoption across various industries, the potential therapeutic applications of this technology have yet to be fully explored.

METHODS

A systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and randomized crossover trials was conducted, utilizing databases such as PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science. This review included studies reporting clinical applications of haptic technology in rehabilitation, cognition, wellness, and mental health among adult subjects.

RESULTS

This systematic review included 34 studies, of which 20 focused on clinical outcomes and 14 on learning clinical skills. The results showed that haptic devices, both robotic and non-robotic, enhance sensorimotor performance and motor function in rehabilitation settings, especially in post-stroke recovery, with reported effect sizes ranging from 0.2 to 0.7. The majority of the haptic technologies reported were integrated into robotic systems (40%). Haptic devices were also reported to improve clinical skills training by providing tactile feedback that enhances procedural performance and trainee self-efficacy. In fact, surgical simulations accounted for 79% of all the modalities used for medical training.

CONCLUSIONS

This review underscores the potential yet underexplored applications of haptic technology in healthcare, including medical education, rehabilitation, cognition, and mental health. The key limitations of this review include heterogeneity across studies, small sample sizes, and a scarcity of comprehensive, long-term investigations. Therefore, future research should aim to validate these findings further and expand the applications of haptic technology to maximize its utility in the healthcare industry and clinical practice.

A Narrative Review of Haptic Technologies and Their Value for Training, Rehabilitation, and the Education of Persons with Special Needs

Haptic technologies are increasingly valuable for human-computer interaction in its many flavors, including, of course, virtual reality systems, which are becoming very useful tools for education, training, and rehabilitation in many areas of medicine, engineering, and daily life. There is a broad spectrum of technologies and approaches that provide haptic stimuli, ranging from the well-known force feedback to subtile pseudo-haptics and visual haptics. Correspondingly, there is a broad spectrum of applications and system designs that include haptic technologies as a relevant component and interaction feature. Paramount is their use in training of medical procedures, but they appear in a plethora of systems deploying virtual reality applications. This narrative review covers the panorama of haptic devices and approaches and the most salient areas of application. Special emphasis is given to education of persons with special needs, aiming to foster the development of innovative systems and methods addressing the enhancement of the quality of life of this segment of the population.

Open-source design of low-cost sensorised elastic actuators for collaborative prosthetics and orthotics

Collaborative robots, or cobots, have become popular due to their ability to safely operate alongside humans in shared environments. These robots use compliant actuators as a key design element to prevent damage during unintended collisions. In prosthetic and orthotic applications, compliant actuators are crucial for ensuring user safety and comfort. However, most compliant cobots for these applications are excessively expensive and complex to construct. Our study introduces an innovative, cost-effective, and sensorised elastic actuator design tailored for prosthetics and orthotics. The design uses a modular approach and leverages 3D printing technology for rapid customisation, enabling efficient and affordable fabrication. Both hardware and software components are open-source, facilitating unrestricted access for students, researchers, and practitioners. Our design supports impedance and admittance control techniques, enhancing the system's capabilities. Validation results show a standard deviation of 9.67 Nm between calculated and measured torque in impedance control and 0.2563 radians between calculated and measured angles in admittance control. This allows for improved adaptability to varying operational requirements in prosthetics and orthotics. By introducing this educational framework encompassing a low-cost, sensorised elastic actuator design, we aim to address the need for accessible solutions in the field of collaborative robotics for prosthetics and orthotics.

The development of aesthetic experience through virtual and augmented reality

Emerging technological innovations offer the potential for experiential engagement through virtual scenarios, yet the viability of this approach for educational purposes remains significantly underexplored. This study aims to assess the feasibility of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) technologies in providing users with aesthetic experiences when visiting digital exhibitions. A total of 190 students participated in this investigation. The control group visited traditional exhibits at the Palace Museum in Beijing. This group underwent a survey to evaluate their acquired aesthetic experience. In contrast, the experimental group, comprising 96 students, engaged with VR/AR scenarios at the Palace Museum in Beijing. Accordingly, students in the experimental group were also surveyed to evaluate both their aesthetic experiences and, additionally, their user experiences. The survey results unveiled significant distinctions in aesthetic experiences between students in the control and experimental groups. Moreover, there were notable correlations between individual variables related to user and aesthetic experiences within the experimental group. Furthermore, the study revealed disparities in both user and aesthetic experiences among male and female students. The findings have implications for aesthetic education teachers and officials in the context of developing sound strategies for providing aesthetic experiences to their students. This information is also of interest to employees of museums, exhibitions, and other cultural facilities, who are interested in holding or hold digital exhibitions.

Can human-machine feedback in a smart learning environment enhance learners' learning performance? A meta-analysis

Objective

The human-machine feedback in a smart learning environment can influences learners' learning styles, ability enhancement, and affective interactions. However, whether it has stability in improving learning performance and learning processes, the findings of many empirical studies are controversial. This study aimed to analyze the effect of human-machine feedback on learning performance and the potential boundary conditions that produce the effect in a smart learning environment.

Methods

Web of Science, EBSCO, PsycINFO, and Science Direct were searched for publications from 2010 to 2022. We included randomized controlled trials with learning performance as outcome. The random effects model was used in the meta-analysis. The main effect tests and the heterogeneity tests were used to evaluate the effect of human-machine feedback mechanism on learning performance, and the boundary conditions of the effect were tested by moderating effects. Moreover, the validity of the meta-analysis was proved by publication bias test.

Results

Out of 35 articles identified, 2,222 participants were included in this study. Human-machine interaction feedback had significant effects on learners' learning process (d = 0.594, k = 26) and learning outcomes (d = 0.407, k = 42). Also, the positive effects of human-machine interaction feedback were regulated by the direction of feedback, the form of feedback, and the type of feedback technique.

Conclusion

To enhance learning performance through human-machine interactive feedback, we should focus on using two-way and multi-subject feedback. The technology that can provide emotional feedback and feedback loops should be used as a priority. Also, pay attention to the feedback process and mechanism, avoid increasing students' dependence on machines, and strengthen learners' subjectivity from feedback mechanism.

The Use of Mixed, Augmented and Virtual Reality in History of Art Teaching: A Case Study

The incorporation of mixed, virtual, and augmented reality into the educational context takes place in this study through the development of a 3D object shaped by the artistic expressions of the Church of the Annunciation in Seville. In a study of an experimental and exploratory nature with a single group, we worked with a total of 20 students enrolled in a Master’s degree, taught at Seville University, under the title of “Arte: idea y producción” (Art: idea and production). A questionnaire based on the “Technology Acceptance Model” (TAM) was used to ascertain the degree of acceptance that the utilized technology had created among students after their participation in the experience. Likewise, the questionnaire permitted understanding of the assessment made by students concerning the presented objects. Among the results obtained, it is noticeable that the participating students show a high level of acceptance of augmented and virtual reality technologies, alongside favorable attitudes towards their utilization and the intention to use them. It is worth highlighting as a significant conclusion that the exploratory study was performed within a real classroom situation, suggesting that both technologies can be applied in formal training environments.
