Compact on-chip temperature sensors based on dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide-ring resonators

Dielectric-loaded graphene-based plasmonic multilogic gate using a multimode interference splitter

In this paper, we propose a multilogic gate (MLG) by utilizing a dielectric-loaded graphene-based plasmonic waveguide (DLGPW) in the mid-infrared spectral region. The proposed MLG is composed of DLGPW-based switches and multimode interference (MMI) splitters and supports three logical operations-AND, XNOR, and NOR-simultaneously. First, by proper control of the graphene surface conductivity, a graphene plasmonic on-off switch is presented, and then a 3 dB MMI splitter based on a DLGPW for a wavelength of 7.8 μm is designed and investigated. Our studies show that electro-optical logic gates based on DLGPWs have not been reported to date. The structure of the presented MLG is very simple and CMOS-compatible. The calculated minimum extinction ratios (ER) for AND, XNOR, and NOR logic gates are 17.53 dB, 53.43 dB, and 17.53 dB, respectively. Also, by some modifications, this structure can act as a NAND logic gate with an ER of 55.22 dB. Compact footprint, high ER, and easiness of on-chip implementation are some advantages of the presented MLG.

High Quality Plasmonic Sensors Based on Fano Resonances Created through Cascading Double Asymmetric Cavities

In this paper, a type of compact nanosensor based on a metal-insulator-metal structure is proposed and investigated through cascading double asymmetric cavities, in which their metal cores shift along different axis directions. The cascaded asymmetric structure exhibits high transmission and sharp Fano resonance peaks via strengthening the mutual coupling of the cavities. The research results show that with the increase of the symmetry breaking in the structure, the number of Fano resonances increase accordingly. Furthermore, by modulating the geometrical parameters appropriately, Fano resonances with high sensitivities to the changes in refractive index can be realized. A maximum figure of merit (FoM) value of 74.3 is obtained. Considerable applications for this work can be found in bio/chemical sensors with excellent performance and other nanophotonic integrated circuit devices such as optical filters, switches and modulators.

A Plasmonic Temperature-Sensing Structure Based on Dual Laterally Side-Coupled Hexagonal Cavities

A plasmonic temperature-sensing structure, based on a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide with dual side-coupled hexagonal cavities, is proposed and numerically investigated by using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method in this paper. The numerical simulation results show that a resonance dip appears in the transmission spectrum. Moreover, the full width of half maximum (FWHM) of the resonance dip can be narrowed down, and the extinction ratio can reach a maximum value by tuning the coupling distance between the waveguide and two cavities. Based on a linear relationship between the resonance dip and environment temperature, the temperature-sensing characteristics are discussed. The temperature sensitivity is influenced by the side length and the coupling distance. Furthermore, for the first time, two concepts—optical spectrum interference (OSI) and misjudge rate (MR)—are introduced to study the temperature-sensing resolution based on spectral interrogation. This work has some significance in the design of nanoscale optical sensors with high temperature sensitivity and a high sensing resolution.

Fiber-pigtailed temperature sensors based on dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide-ring resonators

We demonstrate optical fiber-pigtailed temperature sensors based on dielectric-loaded surface plasmon-polariton waveguide-ring resonators (DLSPP-WRRs), whose transmission depends on the ambient temperature. The DLSPP-WRR-based temperature sensors represent polymer ridge waveguides (~1×1 µm(2) in cross section) forming 5-µm-radius rings coupled to straight waveguides fabricated by UV-lithography on a 50-nm-thick gold layer atop a 2.3-µm-thick CYTOP layer covering a Si wafer. A broadband light source is used to characterize the DLSPP-WRR wavelength-dependent transmission in the range of 1480-1600 nm and to select the DLSPP-WRR component for temperature sensing. In- and out-coupling single-mode optical fibers are then glued to the corresponding access (photonic) waveguides made of 10-µm-wide polymer ridges. The sample is heated from 21°C to 46 °C resulting in the transmission change of ~0.7 dB at the operation wavelength of ~1510 nm. The minimum detectable temperature change is estimated to be ~5.1∙10(-3) °C for the bandwidth of 1 Hz when using standard commercial optical detectors.
