Simulation and analysis of a metamaterial sensor based on a microring resonator

Simulation-Based Design and Optimization of Rectangular Micro-Cantilever-Based Aerosols Mass Sensor

Micro-Cantilever (MCL) is a thin film structure that is applied for aerosol particle mass sensing. Several modifications to the rectangular MCL (length-to-width ratio, slots at the anchor, serrations at its side edges) are made to deduce the role and influence of the shape of rectangular MCL-based aerosol mass sensors and reduce gas damping. A finite element fluid-structure interaction model was used to investigate the performance of MCL. It is found that (I) the mass sensitivity and quality factor decline with the increasing of length-to-width ratio which alters the resonant frequency of the MCL. The optimum conditions, including the length-to-width ratio (σ_lw = 5) and resonant frequency (f₀ = 540.7 kHz) of the MCL, are obtained with the constant surface area (S = 45,000 μm²) in the frequency domain ranging from 0 to 600 kHz. (II) The slots can enhance the read-out signal and bring a small Q factor drop. (III) The edge serrations on MCL significantly reduce the gas damping. The results provide a reference for the design of aerosol mass sensor, which makes it possible to develop aerosol mass sensor with high frequency, sensitivity, and quality.

Resonator-Inspired Metamaterial Sensor: Design and Experimental Validation for Measuring Thickness of Multi-Layered Structures

A digit 8-shaped resonator inspired metamaterial is proposed herein for sensor applications. The resonator is surrounded by a ground frame and excited by a microstrip feedline. The measurement of the sensor can be performed using common laboratory facilities in lieu of using the waveguide, as the resonator, ground frame, and feedline are all on the same microstrip. To achieve metamaterial properties, more than one unit cell is usually utilized, whereas, in this work, a single cell was used to achieve the metamaterial characteristics. The properties of the metamaterial were investigated to find the relationship between the simulation and measurements. The proposed metamaterial sensor shows considerable sensitivity in sensor application. For the sensor application, FR4 and Rogers RO4350 materials were used as the over-layer. The sensor can measure dielectric thickness with a sensitivity of 625 MHz/mm, 468 MHz/mm, and 354 MHz/mm for the single over-layer, double over-layers, and multiple over-layers, respectively. The proposed prototype can be utilized in several applications where metamaterial characteristics are required.

Angle- and Polarization-Insensitive Metamaterial Absorber using Via Array

In this paper, we propose an angle- and polarization-insensitive metamaterial absorber. We design a metamaterial unit cell that is based on a split ring cross resonator (SRCR). We observe that the absorption frequency and absorption ratio are insensitive to incident angles when a via array surrounds the SRR. We demonstrate the effect of the via array using full-wave simulations by comparing the absorptivity of the SRCR with and without the via array. Because of the symmetric geometry, we also realize polarization insensitivity. We build the proposed absorber on a printed-circuit-board with 30 × 30 unit cells, and we demonstrate its performance experimentally in free space. Under normal incidence, the fabricated absorber shows 99.6% absorptivity at 11.3 GHz for all polarization angles, while for oblique incidence, the fabricated absorber maintains an absorptivity higher than 90% for incident angles up to 70° and 60° for transverse magnetic (TM) and transverse electric (TE) modes, respectively.
