Abstract
Microfluidics has emerged as a robust technology for diverse applications, ranging from bio-medical diagnostics to chemical analysis. Among the different characterization techniques that can be used to analyze samples at the microfluidic scale, the coupling of photonic detection techniques and on-chip configurations is particularly advantageous due to its non-invasive nature, which permits sensitive, real-time, high throughput, and rapid analyses, taking advantage of the microfluidic special environments and reduced sample volumes. Putting a special emphasis on integrated detection schemes, this review article explores the most relevant advances in the on-chip implementation of UV-vis, near-infrared, terahertz, and X-ray-based techniques for different characterizations, ranging from punctual spectroscopic or scattering-based measurements to different types of mapping/imaging. The principles of the techniques and their interest are discussed through their application to different systems.

Abstract
The terahertz (THz) radiation refers to electromagnetic waves between infrared and millimeter waves. THz technology has shown a significant potential for medical diagnosis and biomedical applications over the past three decades. Therefore, exploring the biological effects of THz waves has become an important new field in life sciences. Specifically, THz radiation has been proved to be able to diagnose and treat several head and neck diseases. In this review, we primarily discuss the biological characteristics of THz waves and clinical applications of THz technology, focusing on the research progress of THz technology in head and neck diseases (brain cancer, hypopharyngeal cancer, oral diseases, thyroid nodules, Alzheimer's disease, eyes diseases, and otitis). The future application perspectives of THz technologies in head and neck diseases are also highlighted and proposed.

Abstract
A new metamaterial refractive index sensor based on the impedance matching idea is suggested to provide an ultra-narrowband absorption response at terahertz frequencies. In order to accomplish this, the graphene layer has been modeled as circuit components using the recently developed transmission line method and the recently proposed circuit model of Periodic Arrays of Graphene Disks. The given research gives a flowchart and equations for designing a sensor, greatly simplifying the sensor design approach. This study only explores Periodic Arrays of Graphene Disks but we think the offered technique is extensible to any available graphene forms that past designers supplied with a circuit model. We compare and contrast the full-wave simulation results with the suggested circuit model. The metallic ground prohibited the transmission of the episode wave, and all occurrence electromagnetic waves are restricted in the basic design between the graphene disk. As a consequence, a perfect narrowband absorption peak is obtained. Disk absorption spectra have been discovered for a variety of refractive lists. The findings of the circuit model and full-wave simulations appear to be balanced. This RI sensor is suitable for biomedical sensing because of the combination of its features. The proposed sensor's performance as a cancer early detection sensor was evaluated among biomedical sensors, and the findings indicated that the proposed sensor is an excellent candidate for this application.

Abstract
We propose a novel method for detecting microplastic particles in water using terahertz metamaterials. Fluidic channels are employed to flow the water, containing polystyrene spheres, on the surface of the metamaterials. Polystyrene spheres are captured only near the gap structure of the metamaterials as the gap areas are functionalized. The resonant frequency of terahertz metamaterials increased while we circulated the microplastic solution, as polystyrene spheres in the solution are attached to the metamaterial gap areas, which saturates at a specific frequency as the gap areas are filled by the polystyrene spheres. Experimental results were revisited and supported by finite-difference time-domain simulations. We investigated how this method can be used for the detection of microplastics with various solution densities. The saturation time of the resonant frequency shift was found to decrease, while the saturated resonant frequency shift increased as the solution density increased.

Abstract
Proteins play a key role in living organisms. The study of proteins and their dynamics provides information about their functionality, catalysis and potential alterations towards pathological diseases. Several techniques are used for studying protein dynamics, e.g., magnetic resonance, fluorescence imaging techniques, mid-infrared spectroscopy and biochemical assays. Spectroscopic analysis, based on the use of terahertz (THz) radiation with frequencies between 0.1 and 15 THz (3–500 cm−1), was underestimated by the biochemical community. In recent years, however, the potential of THz spectroscopy in the analysis of both simple structures, such as polypeptide molecules, and complex structures, such as protein complexes, has been demonstrated. The THz absorption spectrum provides some information on proteins: for small molecules the THz spectrum is dominated by individual modes related to the presence of hydrogen bonds. For peptides, the spectral information concerns their secondary structure, while for complex proteins such as globular proteins and viral glycoproteins, spectra also provide information on collective modes. In this short review, we discuss the results obtained by THz spectroscopy in the protein dynamics investigations. In particular, we will illustrate advantages and applications of THz spectroscopy, pointing out the complementary information it may provide.

Abstract
As most of the bio-molecules sizes are comparable to the terahertz (THz) wavelength, this frequency range has spurred great attention for bio-medical and bio-sensing applications. Utilizing such capabilities of THz electromagnetic wave, this paper presents the design and analysis of a new non-intrusive and label-free THz bio-sensor for aqueous bio-samples using the microfluidic approach with real-time monitoring. The proposed THz sensor unit utilizes the highly confined feature of the localized spoof surface plasmon (LSSP) resonator to get high sensitivity for any minute change in the dielectric value near it's surface. The proposed sensor, which is designed at 1 THz, exploits the reflection behavior (S11) of the LSSP resonator as the sensing response. The proposed sensor has been designed with a high-quality factor of 192 to obtain a high sensitivity of 13.5 MHz/mgml-1. To validate the proposed concept, a similar sensor unit has been designed and implemented at microwave frequency owing to the geometry dependent characteristics of the LSSP. The developed sensor has got a highly sensitive response at microwave frequency with a sensitivity of 1.2771e-4 MHz/mgml-1. A customized read-out circuitry is also designed and developed to get the sensor response in terms of DC-voltage and to provide a proof of concept for the low-cost point of care (PoC) detection solution using the proposed sensor. It is anticipated that the proposed design of highly sensitive sensor will pave a path to develop lab-on-chip systems for bio-sensing applications.

Abstract
The emerging technique of microfluidics offers new approaches for precisely controlling fluidic conditions on a small scale, while simultaneously facilitating data collection in both high-throughput and quantitative manners. As such, the so-called lab-on-a-chip (LOC) systems have the potential to revolutionize the field of biotechnology. But what needs to happen in order to truly integrate them into routine biotechnological applications? In this chapter, some of the most promising applications of microfluidic technology within the field of biotechnology are surveyed, and a few strategies for overcoming current challenges posed by microfluidic LOC systems are examined. In addition, we also discuss the intensifying trend (across all biotechnology fields) of using point-of-use applications which is being facilitated by new technological achievements.

Abstract
Biosensing with terahertz (THz) waves has received large amounts of attention due to its potential to detect the functional expression of biomolecules in a label-free fashion. However, many practical challenges against the diffraction limit of THz waves and the strong absorption of THz waves into polar solvents still remain in the development of compact biosensors. Here, we present a non-linear, optical, crystal-based THz-microfluidic chip with a few arrays of asymmetric meta-atoms, an elementary unit of metamaterials, for the measurement of trace amounts of solution samples. A near-field THz emission source, that is locally generated in the process of optical rectification at a fs (femtosecond) laser irradiation spot, induces a sharp Fano resonance and modifies the resonance frequency of the meta-atoms when the channel is filled with solution samples of different concentrations. Using this chip, we successfully detected minute changes in the concentration of trace amounts of mineral water and aqueous sugar solutions by monitoring the shift in the resonance frequency. A higher detectable sensitivity of 1.4 fmol of solute in a 128 pL volume of solution was achieved. This was an improvement of one order of magnitude in the sensitivity compared to our previous experiment.

Abstract
Simple, rapid, and efficient cell viability assays play a fundamental role in much of biomedical research, including cell toxicology investigations and antitumor drug screening. Here, we demonstrate for the first time a rapid and label-free cell viability assay using THz spectroscopy in combination with a new optical clearing agent (OCA) and microfluidic technology. This strategy uses a considerably less absorptive OCA to replace the highly absorptive water molecules around the living cells and thus to decrease the background signal interference. Three low-viscosity oils were screened as potential OCA candidates, among which fluorinated oil was selected because of its lower absorption and lowest cytotoxicity. After the liquid medium was replaced with fluorinated oil in a microfluidic chip, an obvious THz spectral difference was observed between the fluorinated oils with and without living cells. This change in THz response was preliminarily attributed to the distinguishable signals between the cells and the fluorinated oil. In addition, we applied this method to cell viability assays of human breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231) after treatment with different antitumor drugs. The results indicated that THz spectroscopy with the aid of the proposed water-replacement strategy presented excellent quantification of cell viability with the advantages of a rapid, label-free, nondestructive microassay, which offers significant potential to developing a convenient and practical cell analysis platform.

Abstract
In this work, the prospects of integrating terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy (TDS) within polymer-based microfluidic platforms are investigated. The work considers platforms based upon the polar polymers polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polycarbonate (PC), polymethyl-methacrylate (PMMA), polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), and the nonpolar polymers fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP), polystyrene (PS), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). The THz absorption coefficients for these polymers are measured. Two microfluidic platforms are then designed, fabricated, and tested, with one being based upon PET, as a representative high-loss polar polymer, and one being based upon UHMWPE, as a representative low-loss nonpolar polymer. It is shown that the UHMWPE microfluidic platform yields reliable measurements of THz absorption coefficients up to a frequency of 1.75 THz, in contrast to the PET microfluidic platform, which functions only up to 1.38 THz. The distinction seen here is attributed to the differing levels of THz absorption and the manifestation of differing f for the systems. Such findings can play an important role in the future integration of THz technology and polymer-based microfluidic systems.

Abstract
Microfluidic platforms have received much attention in recent years. In particular, there is interest in combining spectroscopy with microfluidic platforms. This work investigates the integration of microfluidic platforms and terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) systems. A semiclassical computational model is used to simulate the emission of THz radiation from a GaAs photoconductive THz emitter. This model incorporates white noise with increasing noise amplitude (corresponding to decreasing dynamic range values). White noise is selected over other noise due to its contributions in THz-TDS systems. The results from this semiclassical computational model, in combination with defined sample thicknesses, can provide the maximum measurable absorption coefficient for a microfluidic-based THz-TDS system. The maximum measurable frequencies for such systems can be extracted through the relationship between the maximum measurable absorption coefficient and the absorption coefficient for representative biofluids. The sample thickness of the microfluidic platform and the dynamic range of the THz-TDS system play a role in defining the maximum measurable frequency for microfluidic-based THz-TDS systems. The results of this work serve as a design tool for the development of such systems.
