Shadow Segmentation With Image Thresholding for Describing the Harshness of Light Sources

Light sources are usually described by luminous intensity, color temperature and color rendering index, while the harshness of the light source is often overlooked. It is also referred to as the softness or light quality and can be determined by analyzing the shadows it produces. Shadow detection is often addressed in image analysis research, but the methods usually provide solutions for removing shadows. In this research, a method is proposed for isolating shadows from test images, applying thresholding for segmentation of the shadow into umbral and penumbral regions, calculating the shadow metric, and finally calculating the final numerical evaluation of the quality of the light source, i.e., the degree of its softness or harshness. The method proved to be efficient in analyzing halogen, LED and xenon light sources in conjunction with light-shaping attachments that soften the light. The method is not influenced by the intensity of the light source and focuses exclusively on the quality of the light. The method provides a single value to describe this light property and has the potential to become a standardized method for describing the quality of light sources and light-shaping attachments.

Adaptive Unsupervised-Shadow-Detection Approach for Remote-Sensing Image Based on Multichannel Features

Shadow detection is an essential research topic in the remote-sensing domain, as the presence of shadow causes the loss of ground-object information in real areas. It is hard to define specific threshold values for the identification of shadow areas with the existing unsupervised approaches due to the complexity of remote-sensing scenes. In this study, an adaptive unsupervised-shadow-detection method based on multichannel features is proposed, which can adaptively distinguish shadow in different scenes. First, new multichannel features were designed in the hue, saturation, and intensity color space, and the shadow properties of high hue, high saturation, and low intensity were considered to solve the insufficient feature-extraction problem of shadows. Then, a dynamic local adaptive particle swarm optimization was proposed to calculate the segmentation thresholds for shadows in an adaptive manner. Finally, experiments performed on the Aerial Imagery dataset for Shadow Detection (AISD) demonstrated the superior performance of the proposed approach in comparison with traditional unsupervised shadow-detection and state-of-the-art deep-learning methods. The experimental results show that the proposed approach can detect the shadow areas in remote-sensing images more accurately and efficiently, with the F index being 82.70% on the testing images. Thus, the proposed approach has better application potential in scenarios without a large number of labeled samples.

Local Water-Filling Algorithm for Shadow Detection and Removal of Document Images

Shadow detection and removal is an important task for digitized document applications. It is hard for many methods to distinguish shadow from printed text due to the high darkness similarity. In this paper, we propose a local water-filling method to remove shadows by mapping a document image into a structure of topographic surface. Firstly, we design a local water-filling approach including a flooding and effusing process to estimate the shading map, which can be used to detect umbra and penumbra. Then, the umbra is enhanced using Retinex Theory. For penumbra, we propose a binarized water-filling strategy to correct illumination distortions. Moreover, we build up a dataset called optical shadow removal (OSR dataset), which includes hundreds of shadow images. Experiments performed on OSR dataset show that our method achieves an average ErrorRatio of 0.685 with a computation time of 0.265 s to process an image size of 960×544 pixels on a desktop. The proposed method can remove the shading artifacts and outperform some state-of-the-art methods, especially for the removal of shadow boundaries.

Vessel Detection and Tracking Method Based on Video Surveillance

Ship detection and tracking is a basic task in any vessel traffic monitored area, whether marine or inland. It has a major impact on navigational safety and thus different systems and technologies are used to determine the best possible methods of detecting and identifying sailing units. Video monitoring is present in almost all of them, but it is usually operated manually and is used as a backup system. This is because of the difficulties in implementing an efficient and universal automatic detection method that would work in quickly alternating environmental conditions for all kind of sailing units—from kayaks to seagoing merchant vessels. This paper presents a method that allows the detection and tracking of ships using the video streams of existing monitoring systems for ports and rivers. The method and the results of experiments on three sets of data using cameras with different characteristics, settings, and scene locations are presented. The experiments were carried out in variable light and weather conditions, and a wide range of unit types were used as detection objectives. The results confirm the usability of the proposed solution; however, some minor issues were encountered in the presence of ships wakes or highly unfavourable weather conditions.

Convolutional Neural Network-Based Shadow Detection in Images Using Visible Light Camera Sensor

Recent developments in intelligence surveillance camera systems have enabled more research on the detection, tracking, and recognition of humans. Such systems typically use visible light cameras and images, in which shadows make it difficult to detect and recognize the exact human area. Near-infrared (NIR) light cameras and thermal cameras are used to mitigate this problem. However, such instruments require a separate NIR illuminator, or are prohibitively expensive. Existing research on shadow detection in images captured by visible light cameras have utilized object and shadow color features for detection. Unfortunately, various environmental factors such as illumination change and brightness of background cause detection to be a difficult task. To overcome this problem, we propose a convolutional neural network-based shadow detection method. Experimental results with a database built from various outdoor surveillance camera environments, and from the context-aware vision using image-based active recognition (CAVIAR) open database, show that our method outperforms previous works.
