Power Allocation Scheme for Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access in Underwater Acoustic Communications

Energy Harvesting for TDS-OFDM in NOMA-Based Underwater Communication Systems

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is considered a promising multiple access technique for fifth generation (5G) mobile networks and tactical internet due to its high spectral efficiency. Thanks to the high spectral efficiency of NOMA, it can be a strong candidate suitable for the limited channel bandwidth of underwater acoustic communication. The NOMA transmitter is employing superposition coding (SC). The NOMA receiver is based on the successive interference cancellation (SIC) technique. The multicarrier NOMA adopts orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) as a multicarrier modulation (MCM) technique; however, conventional cyclic prefix OFDM (CP-OFDM) and zero padding (ZP-OFDM) have inefficient spectral efficiency. Thanks to efficient synchronization and high energy-spectral efficiency of the time-division synchronization OFDM (TDS-OFDM), it is a significant attractive candidate for underwater multicarrier communication. However, wasting the power transmission of long guard intervals in the battery-based underwater communication is represented as one of the TDS-OFDM main drawbacks. Harvesting energy and improving the energy efficiency of acoustic-based TDS-OFDM-NOMA represent high achievement goal battery recharging challenges due to the ocean environment. This paper proposes time switching simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (TS-SWIPT) to harvest the energy of transmitted power over the guard interval in the TDS-OFDM-NOMA scheme. The proposed energy harvested scheme harvests the energy from the wasted power in the long guard interval and improves the energy efficiency of the TDS-OFDM multicarrier scheme. This study demonstrates the superiority of the proposed TDS-OFDM-NOMA over the underwater acoustic channel by revealing high energy efficiency, high spectral efficiency, better bit error rate performance, and high system data throughput.

Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing-Based Low-Power Underwater Acoustic Image Transceiver

In this paper, a low-power underwater acoustic (UWA) image transceiver based on generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM) modulation for underwater communication is proposed. The proposed transceiver integrates a low-density parity-check code error protection scheme, adaptive 4-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and 16-QAM strategies, GFDM modulation, and a power assignment mechanism in an UWA image communication environment. The transmission bit error rates (BERs), the peak signal-to-noise ratios (PSNRs) of the received underwater images, and the power-saving ratio (PSR) of the proposed transceiver obtained using 4-QAM and 16-QAM, with perfect channel estimation, and channel estimation errors (CEEs) of 5%, 10%, and 20% were simulated. The PSNR of the received underwater image is 44.46 dB when using 4-QAM with a CEE of 10%. In contrast, PSNR is 48.79 dB when using 16-QAM with a CEE of 10%. When BER is 10^-4, the received UW images have high PSNR values and high resolutions, indicating that the proposed transceiver is suitable for underwater image sensor signal transmission.

Downlink Power Allocation Strategy for Next-Generation Underwater Acoustic Communications Networks

The increasing interest in next-generation underwater acoustic communications networks is due to vast investigation of oceans for oceanography, commercial operations in maritime areas, military surveillance, and more. A surface buoy or underwater base station controller (UBSC) communicates with either transceivers or underwater base stations (UBSs) via acoustic links. Transceivers further communicate with underwater sensor nodes using acoustic links. In this paper, we employ a downlink (DL) power allocation (PA) strategy using an orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) technique for underwater acoustic communications (UAC) networks. First, we present an approach to power offsets using three kinds of pilot spacing and apply the power boosting (PB) concept on orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols for the UAC network. Secondly, we draw the block error rate (BLER) curves from link-level simulation (LLS) and analyze the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for both PA and non-PA strategies. Lastly, we adopt the best PB for system-level simulation (SLS) and compare the throughput and outage performance for PA and non-PA strategies. Hence, the simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the DL PA strategy for UAC networks.
