Airborne Radar Anti-Jamming Waveform Design Based on Deep Reinforcement Learning

Airborne radars are susceptible to a large number of clutter, noise and variable jamming signals in the real environment, especially when faced with active main lobe jamming, as the waveform shortcut technology in the traditional regime can no longer meet the actual battlefield radar anti-jamming requirements. Therefore, it is necessary to study anti-main-lobe jamming techniques for airborne radars in complex environments to improve their battlefield survivability. In this paper, we propose an airborne radar waveform design method based on a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm under clutter and jamming conditions, after previous research on reinforcement-learning (RL)-based airborne radar anti-jamming waveform design methods that have improved the anti-jamming performance of airborne radars. The method uses a Markov decision process (MDP) to describe the complex operating environment of airborne radars, calculates the value of the radar anti-jamming waveform strategy under various jamming states using deep neural networks and designs the optimal anti-jamming waveform strategy for airborne radars based on the duelling double deep Q network (D3QN) algorithm. In addition, the method uses an iterative transformation method (ITM) to generate the time domain signals of the optimal waveform strategy. Simulation results show that the airborne radar waveform designed based on the deep reinforcement learning algorithm proposed in this paper improves the signal-to-jamming plus noise ratio (SJNR) by 2.08 dB and 3.03 dB, and target detection probability by 26.79% and 44.25%, respectively, compared with the waveform designed based on the reinforcement learning algorithm and the conventional linear frequency modulation (LFM) signal at a radar transmit power of 5 W. The airborne radar waveform design method proposed in this paper helps airborne radars to enhance anti-jamming performance in complex environments while further improving target detection performance.

Parameter Estimation for Interrupted Sampling Repeater Jamming Based on ADMM

By repeatedly sampling, storing, and retransmitting parts of the radar signal, interrupted sampling repeater jamming (ISRJ) based on digital radio frequency memory (DRFM) can produce a train of secondary false targets symmetrical to the main false target, threatening to mislead or deceive the victim radar system. This paper proposes a computationally-effective method to estimating the parameters for ISRJ by resorting to the framework of alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). Firstly, the analytical form of pulse compression is derived. Then, for the purpose of estimating the parameters of ISRJ, the original problem is transformed into a nonlinear integer optimization model with respect to a window vector. On this basis, the ADMM is introduced to decompose the nonlinear integer optimization model into a series of sub-problems to estimate the width and number of ISRJ’s sample slices. Finally, the numerical simulation results show that, compared with the traditional time-frequency (TF) method, the proposed method exhibits much better performance in accuracy and stability.

Bayesian Compress Sensing Based Countermeasure Scheme Against the Interrupted Sampling Repeater Jamming

The interrupted sampling repeater jamming (ISRJ) is considered an efficient deception method of jamming for coherent radar detection. However, current countermeasure methods against ISRJ interference may fail in detecting weak echoes, particularly when the transmitting power of the jammer is relatively high. In this paper, we propose a novel countermeasure scheme against ISRJ based on Bayesian compress sensing (BCS), where stable target signal can be reconstructed over a relatively large range of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for both single target and multi-target scenarios. By deriving the ISRJ jamming strategy, only the unjammed discontinuous time segments are extracted to build a sparse target model for the reconstruction algorithm. An efficient alternate iteration is applied to optimize and solve the maximum a posteriori estimate (MAP) of the sparse targets model. Simulation results demonstrate the robustness of the proposed scheme with low SNR or large jammer ratio. Moreover, when compared with traditional FFT or greedy sparsity adaptive matching pursuit algorithm (SAMP), the proposed algorithm significantly improves on the aspects of both the grating lobe level and target detection/false detection probability.

A Novel Interference Suppression Method for Interrupted Sampling Repeater Jamming Based on Singular Spectrum Entropy Function

As a new type of jamming, the interrupted sampling repeater jamming (ISRJ) derived from the digital radio frequency memory (DRFM) technology, can generate coherent multiple false targets after pulse compression. At present, the traditional interference suppression method and its improved methods have insufficient characteristics and poor detection performance under the condition of low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Aiming at addressing this defect, this paper proposes an interference suppression method for ISRJ based on singular spectrum entropy function (SSEF) from the aspects of singular value decomposition (SVD) and information entropy theories. In this method, firstly, considering the local fine characteristics and extraction efficiency, an adaptive multi-scale segmentation (AMS) method is proposed. The purpose of this processing is to extend the salient characteristics while to smooth the similar ones. In AMS, the segmentation criterion based on average energy of segments and the constraint of minimum segmentation is also proposed, then the improved delay embedded matrix is established from the improved trajectory matrix by AMS and delay embedded mapping. Secondly, the singular spectrum of the improved delay embedded matrix is extracted by SVD. Thirdly, because the recognition algorithms based on singular spectrum analysis (SSA), classical SSE and other characteristics fail at low SNR, this paper proposes a characteristic named as SSEF retrieved from the Shannon entropy model. The following proposed entropy-based threshold detection is carried out on the echo signal to realize the band-pass filtering and interference suppression. Finally, experiment results show that in comparison with other interference suppression approaches, SSEF can increase the probability of target detection and the peak-to-side-lobe ratio (PSR) after pulse compression, which validates its stability to noise and jamming especially in the condition of low SNRs.

Clutter and Range Ambiguity Suppression Using Diverse Pulse Train in Pulse Doppler System

Pulse Doppler (PD) systems are widely used for moving target detection, especially in scenarios with clutter. Range ambiguity, which arises from fixed parameters in waveforms, is an inherent drawback in conventional systems. By using a diverse pulse train such as a train of coherent diverse phase coded pulses, these ambiguous peaks can be suppressed effectively but at the cost of sidelobe dispersions. In this work, a novel efficient PD process is proposed to suppress range ambiguity and detect moving targets under strong clutter. Poly-phase coded pulses are employed along with optimal receiving filters, by which the dispersed sidelobes are mitigated to a great extent. Moreover, a novel clutter suppression procedure is included in the PD process, by which strong clutter can be greatly suppressed. Well-designed receiving and inverse filters are employed. Simulation examples are presented to verify the theories. Compared with conventional methods, much better detection results are obtained for both near and remote targets, especially in scenarios with strong clutter.
