Statistical Multipath Model Based on Experimental GNSS Data in Static Urban Canyon Environment

Multi-Phase Fusion for Pedestrian Localization Using Mass-Market GNSS and MEMS Sensors

Precise pedestrian positioning based on smartphone-grade sensors has been a research hotspot for several years. Due to the poor performance of the mass-market Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) Magnetic, Angular Rate, and Gravity (MARG) sensors, the standalone pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) module cannot avoid long-time heading drift, which leads to the failure of the entire positioning system. In outdoor scenes, the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is one of the most popular positioning systems, and smartphone users can use it to acquire absolute coordinates. However, the smartphone's ultra-low-cost GNSS module is limited by some components such as the antenna, and so it is susceptible to serious interference from the multipath effect, which is a main error source of smartphone-based GNSS positioning. In this paper, we propose a multi-phase GNSS/PDR fusion framework to overcome the limitations of standalone modules. The first phase is to build a pseudorange double-difference based on smartphone and reference stations, the second phase proposes a novel multipath mitigation method based on multipath partial parameters estimation (MPPE) and a Double-Difference Code-Minus-Carrier (DDCMC) filter, and the third phase is to propose the joint stride lengths and heading estimations of the two standalone modules, to reduce the long-time drift and noise. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed multipath error estimation can effectively suppress the double-difference multipath error exceeding 4 m, and compared to other methods, our fusion method achieves a minimum error RMSE of 1.63 m in positioning accuracy, and a minimum error RMSE of 4.71 m in long-time robustness for 20 min of continuous walking.

Investigation of Using Sky Openness Ratio as Predictor for Navigation Performance in Urban-like Environment to Support PBN in UTM

One of the causes of positioning inaccuracies in the Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) is navigation error. In urban environment operations, multipaths could be the dominant contributor to navigation errors. This paper presents a study on how the operation environment affects the lateral (horizontal) navigation performance when a self-built UAS is going near different types of urban obstructions in real flight tests. Selected test sites are representative of urban environments, including open carparks, flight paths obstructed by buildings along one or both sides, changing sky access when flying towards corners formed by two buildings or dead ends, and buildings with reflective glass-clad surfaces. The data was analysed to obtain the horizontal position error between Global Positioning System (GPS) position and ground truth derived from Real Time Kinematics (RTK), with considerations for (1) horizontal position uncertainty estimate (EPH) reported by the GPS receiver, (2) no. of visible satellites, and (3) percentage of sky visible (or sky openness ratio, SOR) at various altitudes along the flight paths inside the aforementioned urban environments. The investigation showed that there is no direct correlation between the measured horizontal position error and the reported EPH; thus, the EPH could not be used for the purpose of monitoring navigation performance. The investigation further concluded that there is no universal correlation between the sky openness ratio (SOR) seen by the UAS and the resulting horizontal position error, and a more complex model would need to be considered to translate 3D urban models to expected horizontal navigation uncertainty for the UAS Traffic Management (UTM) airspace.

Estimating the Instantaneous Frequency of Linear and Nonlinear Frequency Modulated Radar Signals-A Comparative Study

Automatic modulation recognition plays a vital role in electronic warfare. Modern electronic intelligence and electronic support measures systems are able to automatically distinguish the modulation type of an intercepted radar signal by means of real-time intra-pulse analysis. This extra information can facilitate deinterleaving process as well as be utilized in early warning systems or give better insight into the performance of hostile radars. Existing modulation recognition algorithms usually extract signal features from one of the rudimentary waveform characteristics, namely instantaneous frequency (IF). Currently, there are a small number of studies concerning IF estimation methods, specifically for radar signals, whereas estimator accuracy may adversely affect the performance of the whole classification process. In this paper, five popular methods of evaluating the IF-law of frequency modulated radar signals are compared. The considered algorithms incorporate the two most prevalent estimation techniques, i.e., phase finite differences and time-frequency representations. The novel approach based on the generalized quasi-maximum likelihood (QML) method is also proposed. The results of simulation experiments show that the proposed QML estimator is significantly more accurate than the other considered techniques. Furthermore, for the first time in the publicly available literature, multipath influence on IF estimates has been investigated.

A Novel UAV-Assisted Positioning System for GNSS-Denied Environments

Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are extensively used for location-based services, civil and military applications, precise time reference, atmosphere sensing, and other applications. In surveying and mapping applications, GNSS provides precise three-dimensional positioning all over the globe, day and night, under almost any weather conditions. The visibility of the ground receiver to GNSS satellites constitutes the main driver of accuracy for GNSS positioning. When this visibility is obstructed by buildings, high vegetation, or steep slopes, the accuracy is degraded and alternative techniques have to be assumed. In this study, a novel concept of using an unmanned aerial system (UAS) as an intermediate means for improving the accuracy of ground positioning in GNSS-denied environments is presented. The higher elevation of the UAS provides a clear-sky visibility line towards the GNSS satellites, thus its accuracy is significantly enhanced with respect to the ground GNSS receiver. Thus, the main endeavor is to transfer the order of accuracy of the GNSS on-board the UAS to the ground. The general architecture of the proposed system includes hardware and software components (i.e., camera, gimbal, range finder) for the automation of the procedure. The integration of the coordinate systems for each payload setting is described, while an error budget analysis is carried out to evaluate and identify the system’s critical elements along with the potential of the proposed method.

Anomaly Detection for Urban Vehicle GNSS Observation with a Hybrid Machine Learning System

In urban areas, the accuracy and reliability of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) vehicle positioning decline due to substantial non-line-of-sight (NLOS) signals and multipath effects. Recently, positioning enhancement approaches with supervised GNSS signal type classification based on 3D building model-aided labelling have received widespread attention. Despite the reduced computing costs and improved real-time performance, the strict requirements of 3D building models on accuracy and timeliness limit the popularization of the technology to some extent. Meanwhile, the diversity of anomalous observation sources is beyond the reach of NLOS/multipath detection methods. This paper attempts to construct an alternative framework for quality identification of GNSS observations combining clustering-based anomaly detection and supervised classification, in which the hierarchical density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (HDBSCAN) algorithm is used to label the offline dataset as normal and anomalous observations without the aid of 3D building models, and the supervised classifier in the online system learns the classification rule for real-time anomaly detection. The experimental results based on the measured vehicle GPS/BeiDou data show that after excluding anomalous observations the single point positioning accuracy of the offline dataset is improved by 87.0%, 45.9%, and 69.6% in the east, north, and up directions, respectively, and the positioning accuracy of two online datasets is improved by 48.4%/45.7%, 39.6%/63.3%, and 49.6%/49.1% in the three directions. Through a large number of comparative experiments and discussion on key issues, it is certified that the proposed method is highly feasible and has great potential in the practical application of urban GNSS vehicle positioning.

GNSS Performance Modelling and Augmentation for Urban Air Mobility

One of the primary challenges facing Urban Air Mobility (UAM) and the safe integration of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) in the urban airspace is the availability of robust, reliable navigation and Sense-and-Avoid (SAA) systems. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are typically the primary source of positioning for most air and ground vehicles and for a growing number of UAS applications; however, their performance is frequently inadequate in such challenging environments. This paper performs a comprehensive analysis of GNSS performance for UAS operations with a focus on failure modes in urban environments. Based on the analysis, a guidance strategy is developed which accounts for the influence of urban structures on GNSS performance. A simulation case study representative of UAS operations in urban environments is conducted to assess the validity of the proposed approach. Results show improved accuracy (approximately 25%) and availability when compared against a conventional minimum-distance guidance strategy.

Use of a Weighted ICP Algorithm to Precisely Determine USV Movement Parameters

The purpose of this article is to present a study aimed at developing a method for the precise determination of unmanned surface vehicle (USV) movement parameters (heading (HDG), speed over ground (SOG) and rate of turn (ROT)) through appropriate processing. The technique employs a modified weighted ICP (Iterative Closest Point) algorithm and a 2D points layer arranged in the horizon plane obtained from measurements. This is performed with the help of Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR). A new method of weighting is presented. It is based on a mean error in a given direction and the results of modified weighted ICP tests carried out on the basis of field measurement data. The first part of the paper characterizes LIDAR measuring errors and indicates the possibilities for their use in matching point clouds. The second part of the article deals with a method for determining the SOG and course over ground (COG), based on a modified weighted ICP algorithm. The main part of the paper reviews a test method aimed at evaluating the accuracy of determining the SOG and COG by the scan-matching method using a modified weighted ICP algorithm. The final part presents an analysis comparing the obtained SOG and COG results with reference results of GNSS RTK measurements and the resulting generalised conclusions.
