Rapid Iodine Sensing on Mechanically Treated Carbon Nanofibers

Potential of nanostructured carbon materials for iodine detection in realistic environments revealed by first-principles calculations

In the context of effective detection of iodine species (I2, CH3I) formed in nuclear power plants and nuclear fuel reprocessing facilities, we perform a comparative study of the potential sensing performance of four expectedly promising 2D materials (8-Pmmn borophene, BC3, C3N, and BC6N) towards the iodine-containing gases and, with the view of checking selectivity, towards common inhibiting gases in the containment atmosphere (H2O and CO), applying methods of dispersion-corrected density functional theory with periodic boundary conditions. A covalent bond is formed between the CO molecule and boron in BC3 or in 8-Pmmn borophene, compromising the anticipated applicability of these materials for iodine detection. The presence of nitrogen atoms in BC6N-2 prevents the formation of a covalent bond with CO; however, the closeness of adsorption energies for all the four gases studied does not distinguish this material as specifically sensitive to iodine species. Finally, the energies of adsorption on C3N yield a significant and promising discrimination between the adsorption energies of (I2, CH3I) vs. (CO, H2O), revealing possibilities for this material's use as an iodine sensor. The conclusions are supported by simulations at finite temperature; underlying electronic structures are also discussed.

Visualized electrochemiluminescence iodine sensor based on polymer dots with Co-reactive group for real-time monitoring system

Trace iodine (I₂) radioisotopes are commonly regarded as an indicator in nuclear security early warnings. Herein, we develop a visualized I₂ real-time monitoring system using electrochemiluminescence (ECL) imaging technology for the first time. In detail, the polymers based on poly [(9,9-dioctylfluorene-alkenyl-2,7-diyl)-alt-co-(1,4-benzo-{2,1',3}-thiadiazole)] are synthesized for iodine detection. An ultra-low limit of detection (0.01 ppt) to iodine can be achieved by adding the modification ratio of tertiary amine onto PFBT as a co-reactive group, which is the lowest detection limit in known iodine vapor sensors. This result can be attributed to the co-reactive group poisoning response mechanism. Considering to the strong ECL behavior of this polymer dots, P-3 Pdots with ultra-low detection limit for iodine is combined with ECL imaging technology to realize the visualized rapid I₂ vapor response with high selectivity. ECL imaging component based on ITO electrode can make iodine monitoring system more convenient and suitable for real-time detection in early warning of nuclear emergency. The detection result cannot be affected by vapor of organic compounds, humidity and temperature, indicating a good selectivity to iodine. This work provides a strategy for nuclear emergency early warning, showing its significance in environmental and nuclear security fields.

Ultrasensitive iodide detection in biofluids based on hot electron-induced reduction of p-Nitrothiophenol on Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles

Surveillance of iodine intake is important because either inadequate or excessive amount of iodine may lead to thyroid malfunctions. Herein, we report a method for fast iodide quantification based on a plasmonic hot electron-driven chemical reaction, which occurs on Au@Ag core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) coated with p-nitrothiophenol (PNTP) molecules. Upon resonant light illumination, hot electron-hole pairs are generated in the NPs. The hot holes capture iodide ions (I^-) and form AgI which decomposes under light; while the hot electrons are shifted to the electron orbital (LUMO) of PNTP and trigger its reduction to p-aminothiophenol (PATP). By measuring characteristic surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic (SERS) peaks of PNTP and PATP, the concentration of I^- in water can be quantitatively determined, with a linear response in the 0.5-20 μM range and a detection limit of 0.30 μM. The Au@Ag nanosensor was then applied for I^- detection in various biofluids including urine, serum and saliva, exhibiting superior detection sensitivity and high selectivity. This sensing assay requires a small sample volume of ∼10 μL and completes the entire detection process in ∼2 min, and therefore holds significant potential for application in point-of-care settings.

Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Films of the Sulfate Dawson Polyoxometalate, [S2W18O62]4-, and Polypyrrole for Iodate Electrocatalysis

The Dawson-type sulfate polyoxometalate (POM) [S₂W₁₈O₆₂]^4- has successfully been entrapped in polypyrrole (PPy) films on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surfaces through pyrrole electropolymerization. Films of varying POM loadings (i.e., thickness) were grown by chronocoulometry. Film-coated electrodes were then characterized using voltammetry, revealing POM surface coverages ranging from 1.9 to 11.7 × 10^-9 mol·cm^-2, and were stable over 100 redox cycles. Typical film morphology and composition were revealed to be porous using atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the effects of this porosity on POM redox activity were probed using AC impedance. The hybrid organic-inorganic films exhibited a good electrocatalytic response toward the reduction of iodate with a sensitivity of 0.769 μA·cm^-2·μM^-1.

Versatile Carbon Nanofiber-Based Sensors

Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) display colossal potential in different fields like energy, catalysis, biomedicine, sensing, and environmental science. CNFs have revealed extensive uses in various sensing platforms due to their distinctive structure, properties, function, and accessible surface functionalization capabilities. This review presents insight into various fabrication methods for CNFs like electrospinning, chemical vapor deposition, and template methods with merits and demerits of each technique. Also, we give a brief overview of CNF functionalization. Their unique physical and chemical properties make them promising candidates for the sensor applications. This review offers detailed discussion of sensing applications (strain sensor, biosensor, small molecule detection, food preservative detection, toxicity biomarker detection, and gas sensor). Various sensing applications of CNF like human motion monitoring and energy storage and conversion are discussed in brief. The challenges and obstacles associated with CNFs for futuristic applications are discussed. This review will be helpful for readers to understand the different fabrication methods and explore various applications of the versatile CNFs.

SU-8 cantilever with integrated pyrolyzed glass-like carbon piezoresistor

Glass-like carbon (GC) is a nongraphitizing material composed entirely of carbon atoms produced from selected organic polymer resins by controlled pyrolysis in an inert atmosphere. The GC properties are a combination of the properties of glass, ceramic, and graphite, including hardness, low density, low thermal conductivity, high chemical inertness, biocompatibility, high electrical conductivity, and microfabrication process compatibility. Despite these unique properties, the application of GC in mechanical sensors has not been explored thus far. Here, we investigate the electrical, structural, and chemical properties of GC thin films derived from epoxy-based negative photoresist SU-8 pyrolyzed from 700 to 900 °C. In addition, we fabricated microGC piezoresistors pyrolyzed at 700 and 900 °C and integrated them into nonpyrolyzed SU-8 cantilevers to create microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) mechanical sensors. The sensitivities of the GC sensor to strain, force, surface stress, and acceleration are characterized to demonstrate their potential and limits for electromechanical microdevices.

Distinct Roles of Tensile and Compressive Stresses in Graphitizing and Properties of Carbon Nanofibers

It is generally accepted that inducing molecular alignment in a polymer precursor via mechanical stresses influences its graphitization during pyrolysis. However, our understanding of how variations of the imposed mechanics can influence pyrolytic carbon microstructure and functionality is inadequate. Developing such insight is consequential for different aspects of carbon MEMS manufacturing and applicability, as pyrolytic carbons are the main building blocks of MEMS devices. Herein, we study the outcomes of contrasting routes of stress-induced graphitization by providing a comparative analysis of the effects of compressive stress versus standard tensile treatment of PAN-based carbon precursors. The results of different materials characterizations (including scanning electron microscopy, Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, as well as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) reveal that while subjecting precursor molecules to both types of mechanical stresses will induce graphitization in the resulting pyrolytic carbon, this effect is more pronounced in the case of compressive stress. We also evaluated the mechanical behavior of three carbon types, namely compression-induced (CIPC), tension-induced (TIPC), and untreated pyrolytic carbon (PC) by Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) of carbon samples in their as-synthesized mat format. Using DMA, the elastic modulus, ultimate tensile strength, and ductility of CIPC and TIPC films are determined and compared with untreated pyrolytic carbon. Both stress-induced carbons exhibit enhanced stiffness and strength properties over untreated carbons. The compression-induced films reveal remarkably larger mechanical enhancement with the elastic modulus 26 times higher and tensile strength 2.85 times higher for CIPC compared to untreated pyrolytic carbon. However, these improvements come at the expense of lowered ductility for compression-treated carbon, while tension-treated carbon does not show any loss of ductility. The results provided by this report point to the ways that the carbon MEMS industry can improve and revise the current standard strategies for manufacturing and implementing carbon-based micro-devices.

Electrochemical sensor for the quantification of iodide in urine of pregnant women

An electrochemical method has been developed to determine iodide in urine using an electrode modified with silver oxide microparticles-poly acrylic acid/poly vinyl alcohol (Ag₂OMPs-PAA/PVA). Silver oxide particles were formed by electrochemical oxidation via cyclic voltammetry. The modified electrode exhibited an excellent response to iodide detection by cathodic stripping voltammetry. The fabrication and operation conditions were optimized in terms of PVA concentration, K₂HPO₄ concentration, amount of AgMPs-PAA/PVA, number of cycles for oxide formation, electrolyte, applied potential (vs. Ag/AgCl), and time. Under the optimum conditions, iodide determination produced a linear range from 1 to 40 μM. The limit of detection was 0.3 μM. Precision was found to be within 7.4% RSD. The developed method was applied to the determination of iodide in urine samples of pregnant women with satisfying recoveries (86 ± 1 to 108 ± 1%). Graphical abstract.

Carbon Nanofiber-Based Functional Nanomaterials for Sensor Applications

Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) exhibit great potentials in the fields of materials science, biomedicine, tissue engineering, catalysis, energy, environmental science, and analytical science due to their unique physical and chemical properties. Usually, CNFs with flat, mesoporous, and porous surfaces can be synthesized by chemical vapor deposition and electrospinning techniques with subsequent chemical treatment. Meanwhile, the surfaces of CNFs are easy to modify with various materials to extend the applications of CNF-based hybrid nanomaterials in multiple fields. In this review, we focus on the design, synthesis, and sensor applications of CNF-based functional nanomaterials. The fabrication strategies of CNF-based functional nanomaterials by adding metallic nanoparticles (NPs), metal oxide NPs, alloy, silica, polymers, and others into CNFs are introduced and discussed. In addition, the sensor applications of CNF-based nanomaterials for detecting gas, strain, pressure, small molecule, and biomacromolecules are demonstrated in detail. This work will be beneficial for the readers to understand the strategies for fabricating various CNF-based nanomaterials, and explore new applications in energy, catalysis, and environmental science.
