Linear Interval Approximation of Sensor Characteristics with Inflection Points

The popularity of smart sensors and the Internet of Things (IoT) is growing in various fields and applications. Both collect and transfer data to networks. However, due to limited resources, deploying IoT in real-world applications can be challenging. Most of the algorithmic solutions proposed so far to address these challenges were based on linear interval approximations and were developed for resource-constrained microcontroller architectures, i.e., they need buffering of the sensor data and either have a runtime dependency on the segment length or require the sensor inverse response to be analytically known in advance. Our present work proposed a new algorithm for the piecewise-linear approximation of differentiable sensor characteristics with varying algebraic curvature, maintaining the low fixed computational complexity as well as reduced memory requirements, as demonstrated in a test concerning the linearization of the inverse sensor characteristic of type K thermocouple. As before, our error-minimization approach solved the two problems of finding the inverse sensor characteristic and its linearization simultaneously while minimizing the number of points needed to support the characteristic.

Linear Interval Approximation for Smart Sensors and IoT Devices

In this work, we introduce and use an innovative approach for adaptive piecewise linear interval approximation of sensor characteristics, which are differentiable functions. The aim is to obtain a discreet type of inverse sensor characteristic, with a predefined maximum approximation error, with minimization of the number of points defining the characteristic, which in turn is related to the possibilities for using microcontrollers with limited energy and memory resources. In this context, the results from the study indicate that to overcome the problems arising from the resource constraints of smart devices, appropriate “lightweight” algorithms are needed that allow efficient connectivity and intelligent management of the measurement processes. The method has two benefits: first, low-cost microcontrollers could be used for hardware implementation of the industrial sensor devices; second, the optimal subdivision of the measurement range reduces the space in the memory of the microcontroller necessary for storage of the parameters of the linearized characteristic. Although the discussed computational examples are aimed at building adaptive approximations for temperature sensors, the algorithm can easily be extended to many other sensor types and can improve the performance of resource-constrained devices. For prescribed maximum approximation error, the inverse sensor characteristic is found directly in the linearized form. Further advantages of the proposed approach are: (i) the maximum error under linearization of the inverse sensor characteristic at all intervals, except in the general case of the last one, is the same; (ii) the approach allows non-uniform distribution of maximum approximation error, i.e., different maximum approximation errors could be assigned to particular intervals; (iii) the approach allows the application to the general type of differentiable sensor characteristics with piecewise concave/convex properties.

fastSW: Efficient Piecewise Linear Approximation of Quaternion-Based Orientation Sensor Signals for Motion Capturing with Wearable IMUs

In the past decade, inertial measurement sensors have found their way into many wearable devices where they are used in a broad range of applications, including fitness tracking, step counting, navigation, activity recognition, or motion capturing. One of their key features that is widely used in motion capturing applications is their capability of estimating the orientation of the device and, thus, the orientation of the limb it is attached to. However, tracking a human’s motion at reasonable sampling rates comes with the drawback that a substantial amount of data needs to be transmitted between devices or to an end point where all device data is fused into the overall body pose. The communication typically happens wirelessly, which severely drains battery capacity and limits the use time. In this paper, we introduce fastSW, a novel piecewise linear approximation technique that efficiently reduces the amount of data required to be transmitted between devices. It takes advantage of the fact that, during motion, not all limbs are being moved at the same time or at the same speed, and only those devices need to transmit data that actually are being moved or that exceed a certain approximation error threshold. Our technique is efficient in computation time and memory utilization on embedded platforms, with a maximum of 210 instructions on an ARM Cortex-M4 microcontroller. Furthermore, in contrast to similar techniques, our algorithm does not affect the device orientation estimates to deviate from a unit quaternion. In our experiments on a publicly available dataset, our technique is able to compress the data to 10% of its original size, while achieving an average angular deviation of approximately 2° and a maximum angular deviation below 9°.

SSVEP Enhancement Using Moving Average Filter Controlled by Phase Features

Brain-computer interface (BCI) systems translate the human neurophysiological activities into commands through EEG analysis. Improving the BCI performances leads to faster and easier use and less fatigue. In this study, we proposed a new prepossessing approach to increase the robustness of a steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) based BCI. Inspiring from the known properties of the SSVEP frequency components, the goal was to enhance the signal quality by making it more convenient to be interpreted by the decision-making step. We first investigated the potential to detect the deteriorating periods based on the physiological properties of the SSVEP. The proposed system localizes the intervals which can obscure the SSVEP frequencies by a new algorithm founded on the processing and the analysis of the instantaneous phase. The piecewise linear regression allows a sampler comprehension of the phase signal. Then, these intervals are filtered by the moving average filter to enhance the SSVEP quality. Finally, the decision making is made by the canonical correlation analysis (CCA) algorithm. The results of experiments, using real EEG signals from five subjects, show that the proposed approach significantly increases the performances in terms of accuracy and information transfer rate by about 7.3% and 3.85 bits/min, respectively, in case of 2 s segment length. On the other hand, the spatial filtering methods of the literature weaken the system performances.

Step by Step Towards Effective Human Activity Recognition: A Balance between Energy Consumption and Latency in Health and Wellbeing Applications

Human activity recognition (HAR) is a classification process that is used for recognizing human motions. A comprehensive review of currently considered approaches in each stage of HAR, as well as the influence of each HAR stage on energy consumption and latency is presented in this paper. It highlights various methods for the optimization of energy consumption and latency in each stage of HAR that has been used in literature and was analyzed in order to provide direction for the implementation of HAR in health and wellbeing applications. This paper analyses if and how each stage of the HAR process affects energy consumption and latency. It shows that data collection and filtering and data segmentation and classification stand out as key stages in achieving a balance between energy consumption and latency. Since latency is only critical for real-time HAR applications, the energy consumption of sensors and devices stands out as a key challenge for HAR implementation in health and wellbeing applications. Most of the approaches in overcoming challenges related to HAR implementation take place in the data collection, filtering and classification stages, while the data segmentation stage needs further exploration. Finally, this paper recommends a balance between energy consumption and latency for HAR in health and wellbeing applications, which takes into account the context and health of the target population.
