Centimeter-Level Orbit Determination for TG02 Spacelab Using Onboard GNSS Data

A New Space-to-Ground Microwave-Based Two-Way Time Synchronization Method for Next-Generation Space Atomic Clocks

The accuracy of time synchronization can be significantly increased by enhancing the performance of atomic clocks. Future-generation time-frequency loads will be equipped with the latest ultrahigh-precision atomic clocks (with a day stability better than 10−17) and will leverage advantages of the space environment such as microgravity and low interference to operate a new generation of high-performance time-frequency payloads on low-orbit spacecraft. Moreover, using the high-precision time-frequency system of ground stations, low-time-delay high-performance time-frequency transmission networks, which have the potential to achieve ultrahigh-precision time synchronization, will be constructed. By considering full link error terms above the picosecond level, this paper proposes a new space-to-ground microwave two-way time synchronization method for scenarios involving low-orbit spacecraft and ground stations. Using the theoretical principles and practical application scenarios related to this method, a theoretical and simulation verification platform was developed to research the impact of the attitude, phase center calibration, and orbit determination errors on the single-frequency two-way time synchronization method. The effectiveness of this new method was verified. The results showed that when the attitude error is less than 72 arc seconds (0.02°), the phase center calibration error is less than 1 mm, and the precision orbit determination (POD) error is less than 10 cm (three-axis). After disregarding nonlink error terms such as equipment noise, this method can attain a space-to-ground time synchronization accuracy of better than 1.5 ps, and the time deviation (TDEV) of the transfer link is better than 0.7 ps @ 100 s, which results in ultrahigh-precision space-to-ground time synchronization.

A Sensitivity Study of POD Using Dual-Frequency GPS for CubeSats Data Limitation and Resources

Making use of dual-frequency (DF) global navigation satellite system (GNSS) observations and good dynamic models, the precise orbit determination (POD) for the satellites on low earth orbits has been intensively investigated in the last decades and has achieved an accuracy of centimeters. With the rapidly increasing number of the CubeSat missions in recent years, the POD of CubeSats were also attempted with combined dynamic models and GNSS DF observations. While comprehensive dynamic models are allowed to be used in the postprocessing mode, strong constraints on the data completeness, continuity, and restricted resources due to the power and size limits of CubeSats still hamper the high-accuracy POD. An analysis of these constraints and their impact on the achievable orbital accuracy thus needs to be considered in the planning phase. In this study, with the focus put on the use of DF GNSS data in postprocessing CubeSat POD, a detailed sensitivity analysis of the orbital accuracy was performed w.r.t. the data continuity, completeness, observation sampling interval, latency requirements, availability of the attitude information, and arc length. It is found that the overlapping of several constraints often causes a relatively large degradation in the orbital accuracy, especially when one of the constraints is related to a low duty-cycle of, e.g., below 40% of time. Assuming that the GNSS data is properly tracked except for the assumed constraints, and using the International GNSS Service (IGS) final products or products from the IGS real-time service, the 3D orbital accuracy for arcs of 6 h to 24 h should generally be within or around 1 dm, provided that the limitation on data is not too severe, i.e., with a duty-cycle not lower than 40% and an observation sampling interval not larger than 60 s.

Research on Attitude Models and Antenna Phase Center Correction for Jason-3 Satellite Orbit Determination

We focused on the researches of two models used for Jason-3 precise orbit determination (POD)-Jason-3 attitude modes and receiver phase center variation (PCV) model. A combined attitude mode for the Jason-3 satellite is designed based on experimental analysis used in some special cases, such as in the absence of quaternions or when inconvenient to use. We researched the linking of satellite attitude with antenna phase center. Specially, to verify the validity of the combined attitude, we analyzed the effects of different attitude modes on receiver phase center offset (PCO) estimation, PCO correction and POD. Meanwhile, the difference analysis of PCO correction based on attitude modes also contains the combined attitude modeling processes. The POD results showed that the orbital accuracies with the combined attitude are slightly more stable than those with attitude event file. By introducing receiver PCVs into POD, the mean residuals root-mean-square (RMS) is reduced by 1.9 mm and orbital 3D-RMS position difference is improved by 5.7 mm. The eight schemes were designed to integratedly verify the effectiveness of different attitude modes and receiver PCVs model. The results conclude that the accuracy using the combined attitude is higher than that of event file, which also prove the feasibility of the combined attitude in integrated POD and it can be as a revision of attitude event file. Using all mentioned attitude modes, the orbital accuracy by introducing PCVs can be improved by the millimeter level. The integrated effects of attitude modes and receiver PCVs on POD are almost consistent with the effects of a single variable. The optimal results of Jason-3 POD indicate that orbital mean radial RMS is close to 1 cm, and the 3D-RMS position difference is within 3 cm.
