Comparison of Soil Total Nitrogen Content Prediction Models Based on Vis-NIR Spectroscopy

Visible-near-infrared spectrum (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy technology is one of the most important methods for non-destructive and rapid detection of soil total nitrogen (STN) content. In order to find a practical way to build STN content prediction model, three conventional machine learning methods and one deep learning approach are investigated and their predictive performances are compared and analyzed by using a public dataset called LUCAS Soil (19,019 samples). The three conventional machine learning methods include ordinary least square estimation (OLSE), random forest (RF), and extreme learning machine (ELM), while for the deep learning method, three different structures of convolutional neural network (CNN) incorporated Inception module are constructed and investigated. In order to clarify effectiveness of different pre-treatments on predicting STN content, the three conventional machine learning methods are combined with four pre-processing approaches (including baseline correction, smoothing, dimensional reduction, and feature selection) are investigated, compared, and analyzed. The results indicate that the baseline-corrected and smoothed ELM model reaches practical precision (coefficient of determination (R²) = 0.89, root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) = 1.60 g/kg, and residual prediction deviation (RPD) = 2.34). While among three different structured CNN models, the one with more 1 × 1 convolutions preforms better (R² = 0.93; RMSEP = 0.95 g/kg; and RPD = 3.85 in optimal case). In addition, in order to evaluate the influence of data set characteristics on the model, the LUCAS data set was divided into different data subsets according to dataset size, organic carbon (OC) content and countries, and the results show that the deep learning method is more effective and practical than conventional machine learning methods and, on the premise of enough data samples, it can be used to build a robust STN content prediction model with high accuracy for the same type of soil with similar agricultural treatment.

Improving Land Cover Classification Using Extended Multi-Attribute Profiles (EMAP) Enhanced Color, Near Infrared, and LiDAR Data

Hyperspectral (HS) data have found a wide range of applications in recent years. Researchers observed that more spectral information helps land cover classification performance in many cases. However, in some practical applications, HS data may not be available, due to cost, data storage, or bandwidth issues. Instead, users may only have RGB and near infrared (NIR) bands available for land cover classification. Sometimes, light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data may also be available to assist land cover classification. A natural research problem is to investigate how well land cover classification can be achieved under the aforementioned data constraints. In this paper, we investigate the performance of land cover classification while only using four bands (RGB+NIR) or five bands (RGB+NIR+LiDAR). A number of algorithms have been applied to a well-known dataset (2013 IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society Data Fusion Contest). One key observation is that some algorithms can achieve better land cover classification performance by using only four bands as compared to that of using all 144 bands in the original hyperspectral data with the help of synthetic bands generated by Extended Multi-attribute Profiles (EMAP). Moreover, LiDAR data do improve the land cover classification performance even further.

Increasing the Geometrical and Interpretation Quality of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Photogrammetry Products using Super-Resolution Algorithms

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have now become very popular in photogrammetric and remote-sensing applications. Every day, these vehicles are used in new applications, new terrains, and new tasks, facing new problems. One of these problems is connected with flight altitude and the determined ground sample distance in a specific area, especially within cities and industrial and construction areas. The problem is that a safe flight altitude and camera parameters do not meet the required or demanded ground sampling distance or the geometrical and texture quality. In the cases where the flight level cannot be reduced and there is no technical ability to change the UAV camera or lens, the author proposes the use of a super-resolution algorithm for enhancing images acquired by UAVs and, consequently, increase the geometrical and interpretation quality of the final photogrammetric product. The main study objective was to utilize super-resolution (SR) algorithms to improve the geometric and interpretative quality of the final photogrammetric product, assess its impact on the accuracy of the photogrammetric processing and on the traditional digital photogrammetry workflow. The research concept assumes a comparative analysis of photogrammetric products obtained on the basis of data collected from small, commercial UAVs and products obtained from the same data but additionally processed by the super-resolution algorithm. As the study concludes, the photogrammetric products that are created as a result of the algorithms’ operation on high-altitude images show a comparable quality to the reference products from low altitudes and, in some cases, even improve their quality.

Methods and Challenges Using Multispectral and Hyperspectral Images for Practical Change Detection Applications

Multispectral (MS) and hyperspectral (HS) images have been successfully and widely used in remote sensing applications such as target detection, change detection, and anomaly detection. In this paper, we aim at reviewing recent change detection papers and raising some challenges and opportunities in the field from a practitioner’s viewpoint using MS and HS images. For example, can we perform change detection using synthetic hyperspectral images? Can we use temporally-fused images to perform change detection? Some of these areas are ongoing and will require more research attention in the coming years. Moreover, in order to understand the context of our paper, some recent and representative algorithms in change detection using MS and HS images are included, and their advantages and disadvantages will be highlighted.

Gradient in spectral and color images: from the Di Zenzo initial construction to a generic proposition

In this article, we define a generic gradient for color and spectral images, considering a proposed taxonomy of the state of the art. A full-vector gradient, taking into account the sensor's characteristics, is in compliance with the metrological properties of genericity, robustness, and reproducibility. Here, we construct a protocol to compare gradients from different sensors. The comparison is developed by simulating sensors using their spectral characteristics. We develop three experiments using this protocol. The first experiment shows the consistency of results for similar sensors; the second demonstrates the genericity of the approach, adapted to any kind of imaging sensors; and the third focuses on the channel inter-correlation considering sensors such as in the color vision deficiency case.
