Resonating Shell: A Spherical-Omnidirectional Ultrasound Transducer for Underwater Sensor Networks

Systematic design and experimental realization of a radially cascaded spherical piezoelectric transducer

As a critical component of ultrasonic vibration systems, piezoelectric transducers play an essential role in various practical application scenarios. Recent advances in spherical transducers have been widely used in underwater sound and structural health monitoring, while the cascaded spherical piezoelectric transducer with arbitrary piezoceramic shell thickness has not been investigated. Here, we propose a radially cascaded spherical piezoelectric transducer (RCSPT) and derive its electromechanical equivalent circuit with mechanical losses, dielectric losses, and load mechanical impedances. The resulting device is composed of three concentric spherical metal shells and two radially polarized spherical piezoceramic shells. The underlying physical mechanism is the inverse piezoelectric effect, which converts electrical signals into mechanical vibrations. The effects of the spherical piezoceramic shell's thickness and location on the RCSPT are studied. We also analyze the effects of mechanical losses, dielectric losses, and load mechanical impedances on the modulus of input electric impedance of the cascaded spherical transducer. The experiments are conducted to verify the electromechanical characteristics of the resulting device, which are in good agreement with the simulated results and theoretical predictions. Our methodology will offer new possibilities for designing RCSPTs and may promote applications in various fields, such as underwater acoustic detection and structural health monitoring.

Designing a Geodesic Faceted Acoustical Volumetric Array Using a Novel Analytical Method

We present a novel analytical method as an efficient approach to design a geodesic-faceted array (GFA) for achieving a beam performance equivalent to that of a typical spherical array (SA). GFA is a triangle-based quasi-spherical configuration, which is conventionally created using the icosahedron method imitated from the geodesic dome roof construction process. In this conventional approach, the geodesic triangles have nonuniform geometries due to some distortions that occur during the random icosahedron division process. In this study, we took a paradigm shift from this approach and adopt a new technique to design a GFA that is based on uniform triangles. The characteristic equations that relate the geodesic triangle with a spherical platform were first developed as functions of the operating frequency and geometric parameters of the array. Then, the directional factor was derived to calculate the beam pattern associated with the array. A sample design of GFA for a given underwater sonar imaging system was synthesized through an optimization process. The GFA design was compared with that of a typical SA, and a reduction of 16.5% in the number of array elements was recorded in the GFA at a nearly equivalent performance. Both arrays were modeled, simulated, and analyzed using the finite element method (FEM) to validate the theoretical designs. Comparison of the results showed a high degree of compliance between the FEM and the theoretical method for both arrays. The proposed novel approach is faster and requires fewer computer resources than the FEM. Moreover, this approach is more flexible than the traditional icosahedron method in adjusting geometrical parameters in response to desired performance outputs.

Design and Fabrication of a Stacked Three-Phase Piezoelectric Composites Ring Array Underwater Ultrasound Transducer

A stacked three-phase piezoelectric composites ring array underwater ultrasound transducer was developed in this paper. The circular structure of three-phase piezoelectric composite with a large open angle was improved based on the 1-3 piezoelectric composites. The structure size of the transducer’s sensitive component was designed by using ANSYS simulation software, and the single-ring samples of three-phase piezoelectric composites with different thicknesses were fabricated. Based on the bandwidth broadening theory of multimode coupled vibration, the piezoelectric composite ring-shaped sensitive component was fabricated by the piezoelectric composite curved-surface-forming process. According to the design structure of the transducer, the stacked three-phase piezoelectric composites ring array underwater ultrasound transducer was processed. The experimental results show that the maximum transmission voltage response is 154 dB, the open angle of the horizontal beam reaches 360°, and the bandwidth of −3 dB is 86 kHz. The developed transducers achieved a high frequency, broadband, and large open angle to radiate sound waves.

Spherical-Omnidirectional Piezoelectric Composite Transducer for High- Frequency Underwater Acoustics

Spherical-omnidirectional acoustic source has become a powerful tool to provide a near-ideal omnidirectional beam pattern for acoustic tests and communications. Current spherical-omnidirectional acoustic sources do not combine an omnidirectional beam pattern with a high transmitting voltage response (TVR) in the frequency range of above 200 kHz. This work presents the design, fabrication, and measurements of a high-frequency spherical-omnidirectional transducer that can provide a near-ideal omnidirectional beam pattern and a high TVR. The active element of the transducer consists of six identical square coupons with spherical curvature 1-3 piezoelectric composites operating in thickness mode. Electroacoustic responses of the fabricated transducer in water were measured. The measured resonance frequency of the transducer was 280 kHz. The maximum TVR was 161.3 dB re 1 μ Pa/V@1 m. The horizontal and vertical beamwidths of the transducer were 360° and 346°, respectively. Measurements show that the spherical piezoelectric composite transducer has a favorable spherical-omnidirectional behavior and a high TVR at high frequency. These results demonstrate that the spherical piezoelectric composite transducer is potentially a strong candidate for a high-frequency underwater acoustic source that requires an omnidirectional response.

A novelly universal theory: Toward accurately evaluating radial vibration characteristics for radially sandwiched spherical piezoelectric transducer

With the development of ultrasonic technology, some ultrasonic processing technologies require a wide processing range. In this paper, a radially sandwiched spherical piezoelectric transducer is proposed and analyzed, which is composed of a spherical piezoelectric ceramic sandwiched by two concentric spherical metal shells. The electromechanical equivalent circuits of the spherically isotropic spherical shell and the spherical piezoelectric ceramic with arbitrary wall thickness are derived from their motion equations. According to the mechanical boundary conditions, the electromechanical equivalent circuits and frequency equation of various piezoelectric composite vibration systems can be obtained, including the radially sandwiched spherical piezoelectric transducer. The correctness of the proposed theory is verified via comparison with the finite element method and the previous theoretical model. In addition, the 2nd-order effective mechanical coupling coefficient for the radially sandwiched spherical piezoelectric transducer is higher than that of 1st-order within a specific range of wall thickness, which can be designed as the high-frequency transducer. The radially sandwiched spherical piezoelectric transducer is expected to be used in underwater sound, structural health monitoring, and high-frequency ultrasound.
