Locating an Underwater Target Using Angle-Only Measurements of Heterogeneous Sonobuoys Sensors with Low Accuracy

This paper considers locating an underwater target, where many sonobuoys are positioned to measure the bearing of the target’s sound. A sonobuoy has very low bearing accuracy, such as 10 degrees. In practice, we can use multiple heterogeneous sonobuoys, such that the variance of a sensor noise may be different from that of another sensor. In addition, the maximum sensing range of a sensor may be different from that of another sensor. The true target must exist within the sensing range of a sensor if the sensor detects the bearing of the target. In order to estimate the target position based on bearings-only measurements with low accuracy, this paper introduces a novel target localization approach based on multiple Virtual Measurement Sets (VMS). Here, each VMS is derived considering the bearing measurement noise of each sonar sensor. As far as we know, this paper is novel in locating a target’s 2D position based on heterogeneous sonobuoy sensors with low accuracy, considering the maximum sensing range of a sensor. The superiority (considering both time efficiency and location accuracy) of the proposed localization is verified by comparing it with other state-of-the-art localization methods using computer simulations.

Cooperative Reception of Multiple Satellite Downlinks

Popular small satellites host individual sensors or sensor networks in space but require ground stations with directional antennas on rotators to download sensors’ data. Such ground stations can establish a single downlink communication with only one satellite at a time with high vulnerability to system outages when experiencing severe channel impairments or steering engine failures. To contribute to the area of improving the reception quality of small satellites signals, this paper presents a simple receive diversity scheme with proposed processing algorithms to virtually combine satellite downlink streams collected from multiple omnidirectional receivers. These algorithms process multiple received versions of the same signal from multiple geographically separated receiving sites to be combined in one virtual ground station. This virtual ground station helps detect the intended signal more reliably based only on a network of simple and cooperating software-defined radio receivers with omnidirectional antennas. The suggested receive diversity combining techniques can provide significant system performance improvement if compared to the performance of each individual receiving site. In addition, the probability of system outages is decreased even if one or more sites experience severe impairment consequences. Simulation results showed that the bit error rate (BER) of the combined stream is lower than the BER of the best quality receiving site if considered alone. Moreover, virtual ground stations with cooperative omnidirectional reception at geographically separated receivers also allow data to be received from multiple satellites in the same frequency band simultaneously, as software-defined receivers can digitize a wider portion of the frequency band. This can be a significant conceptual advantage as the number of small satellites transmitting data grows, and it is reasonable to avoid the corresponding necessary increase in the number of fully equipped ground stations with rotators.

A Novel Approach for Underwater Vehicle Localization and Communication Based on Laser Reflection

This study presents a device for tracking, locating and communicating underwater vehicles as they work near the seabed. The system includes a base station placed on the seabed and a reflective module mounted on a hybrid underwater profiler (HUP). The base station localizes and communicates with the HUP working near the seabed based on laser reflections of corner cube retroreflectors. A tracking method based on the particle filter algorithm is then presented. Localization is performed using the least-squares method with refraction compensation. Lost tracking links are retrieved via a recovering approach based on the interpolation method. Finally, a communication method using a modulating retroreflector installed on the reflection module is proposed. The proposed tracking, localization, and communication approach provides higher localization accuracy with lower power consumption at low cost compared with the commonly used acoustic methods. The effectiveness of the proposed approach was clarified via tracking, localization, and communication experiments.
