A Comparative Study of Parameter Identification Methods for Asymmetric Nonlinear Systems with Quadratic and Cubic Stiffness

Understanding the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of engineering structures is challenging, especially for the systems that exhibit asymmetric nonlinear behavior. This paper compared four parameter identification methods for asymmetric nonlinear systems incorporating quadratic and cubic stiffness nonlinearities. Hilbert transform, zero-crossing, direct quadrature, and wavelet transform were used to obtain the backbone, envelope, and restoring force curves from the free vibration time history. A nonlinear curve-fitting method was then applied to estimate the stiffness parameters of the asymmetric systems, and a linear least square fitting approach was utilized to estimate the damping parameters of the asymmetric systems. We used the Helmholtz-Duffing oscillator as a numerical example and a nonlinear vibration absorber with geometric imperfections to verify the feasibility and accuracy of these methods. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods and the deviations in estimated results are discussed.

Detection Based on Crack Key Point and Deep Convolutional Neural Network

Based on the features of cracks, this research proposes the concept of a crack key point as a method for crack characterization and establishes a model of image crack detection based on the reference anchor points method, named KP-CraNet. Based on ResNet, the last three feature layers are repurposed for the specific task of crack key point feature extraction, named a feature filtration network. The accuracy of the model recognition is controllable and can meet both the pixel-level requirements and the efficiency needs of engineering. In order to verify the rationality and applicability of the image crack detection model in this study, we propose a distribution map of distance. The results for factors of a classical evaluation such as accuracy, recall rate, F1 score, and the distribution map of distance show that the method established in this research can improve crack detection quality and has a strong generalization ability. Our model provides a new method of crack detection based on computer vision technology.

Autonomous Driving Robot That Drives and Returns along a Planned Route in Underground Mines by Recognizing Road Signs

In this study, an autonomous driving robot that drives and returns along a planned route in an underground mine tunnel was developed using a machine-vision-based road sign recognition algorithm. The robot was designed to recognize road signs at the intersection of a tunnel using a geometric matching algorithm of machine vision, and the autonomous driving mode was switched according to the shape of the road sign to drive the robot according to the planned route. The autonomous driving mode recognized the shape of the tunnel using the distance data from the LiDAR sensor; it was designed to drive while maintaining a fixed distance from the centerline or one wall of the tunnel. A machine-vision-based road sign recognition system and an autonomous driving robot for underground mines were used in a field experiment. The results reveal that all road signs were accurately recognized, and the average matching score was 979.14 out of 1000, confirming stable driving along the planned route.

Methods for Preventing Visual Attacks in Convolutional Neural Networks Based on Data Discard and Dimensionality Reduction

The article is devoted to the study of convolutional neural network inference in the task of image processing under the influence of visual attacks. Attacks of four different types were considered: simple, involving the addition of white Gaussian noise, impulse action on one pixel of an image, and attacks that change brightness values within a rectangular area. MNIST and Kaggle dogs vs. cats datasets were chosen. Recognition characteristics were obtained for the accuracy, depending on the number of images subjected to attacks and the types of attacks used in the training. The study was based on well-known convolutional neural network architectures used in pattern recognition tasks, such as VGG-16 and Inception_v3. The dependencies of the recognition accuracy on the parameters of visual attacks were obtained. Original methods were proposed to prevent visual attacks. Such methods are based on the selection of “incomprehensible” classes for the recognizer, and their subsequent correction based on neural network inference with reduced image sizes. As a result of applying these methods, gains in the accuracy metric by a factor of 1.3 were obtained after iteration by discarding incomprehensible images, and reducing the amount of uncertainty by 4–5% after iteration by applying the integration of the results of image analyses in reduced dimensions.

A Comparative Analysis of Signal Decomposition Techniques for Structural Health Monitoring on an Experimental Benchmark

Signal Processing is, arguably, the fundamental enabling technology for vibration-based Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), which includes damage detection and more advanced tasks. However, the investigation of real-life vibration measurements is quite compelling. For a better understanding of its dynamic behaviour, a multi-degree-of-freedom system should be efficiently decomposed into its independent components. However, the target structure may be affected by (damage-related or not) nonlinearities, which appear as noise-like distortions in its vibrational response. This response can be nonstationary as well and thus requires a time-frequency analysis. Adaptive mode decomposition methods are the most apt strategy under these circumstances. Here, a shortlist of three well-established algorithms has been selected for an in-depth analysis. These signal decomposition approaches—namely, the Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD), the Hilbert Vibration Decomposition (HVD), and the Variational Mode Decomposition (VMD)—are deemed to be the most representative ones because of their extensive use and favourable reception from the research community. The main aspects and properties of these data-adaptive methods, as well as their advantages, limitations, and drawbacks, are discussed and compared. Then, the potentialities of the three algorithms are assessed firstly on a numerical case study and then on a well-known experimental benchmark, including nonlinear cases and nonstationary signals.

The Extreme Function Theory for Damage Detection: An Application to Civil and Aerospace Structures

Any damaged condition is a rare occurrence for mechanical systems, as it is very unlikely to be observed. Thus, it represents an extreme deviation from the median of its probability distribution. It is, therefore, necessary to apply proper statistical solutions, i.e., Rare Event Modelling (REM). The classic tool for this aim is the Extreme Value Theory (EVT), which deals with uni- or multivariate scalar values. The Extreme Function Theory (EFT), on the other hand, is defined by enlarging the fundamental EVT concepts to whole functions. When combined with Gaussian Process Regression (GPR), the EFT is perfectly suited for mode shape-based outlier detection. In fact, it is possible to investigate the structure’s normal modes as a whole rather than focusing on their constituent data points, with quantifiable advantages. This provides a useful tool for Structural Health Monitoring, especially to reduce false alarms. This recently proposed methodology is here tested and validated both numerically and experimentally for different examples coming from Civil and Aerospace Engineering applications. One-dimensional beamlike elements with several boundary conditions are considered, as well as a two-dimensional plate-like spar and a frame structure.

Dynamic Characteristics and Damage Detection of a Metallic Thermal Protection System Panel Using a Three-Dimensional Point Tracking Method and a Modal Assurance Criterion

A thermal protection system (TPS) is designed and fabricated to protect a hypersonic vehicle from extreme conditions. Good condition of the TPS panels is necessary for the next flight mission. A loose bolted joint is a crucial defect in a metallic TPS panel. This study introduces an experimental method to investigate the dynamic characteristics and state of health of a metallic TPS panel through an operational modal analysis (OMA). Experimental investigations were implemented under free-free supports to account for a healthy state, the insulation effect, and fastener failures. The dynamic deformations resulted from an impulse force were measured using a non-contact three-dimensional point tracking (3DPT) method. Using changes in natural frequencies, the damping ratio, and operational deflection shapes (ODSs) due to the TPS failure, we were able to detect loose bolted joints. Moreover, we also developed an in-house program based on a modal assurance criterion (MAC) to detect the state of damage of test structures. In a damage state, such as a loose bolted joint, the stiffness of the TPS panel was reduced, which resulted in changes in the natural frequency and the damping ratio. The calculated MAC values were less than one, which pointed out possible damage in the test TPS panels. Our results also demonstrated that a combination of the 3DPT-based OMA method and the MAC achieved good robustness and sufficient accuracy in damage identification for complex aerospace structures such as TPS structures.

The Teager-Kaiser Energy Cepstral Coefficients as an Effective Structural Health Monitoring Tool

Recently, features and techniques from speech processing have started to gain increasing attention in the Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) community, in the context of vibration analysis. In particular, the Cepstral Coefficients (CCs) proved to be apt in discerning the response of a damaged structure with respect to a given undamaged baseline. Previous works relied on the Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCCs). This approach, while efficient and still very common in applications, such as speech and speaker recognition, has been followed by other more advanced and competitive techniques for the same aims. The Teager-Kaiser Energy Cepstral Coefficients (TECCs) is one of these alternatives. These features are very closely related to MFCCs, but provide interesting and useful additional values, such as e.g., improved robustness with respect to noise. The goal of this paper is to introduce the use of TECCs for damage detection purposes, by highlighting their competitiveness with closely related features. Promising results from both numerical and experimental data were obtained.
