Femtosecond Laser Direct Writing of Optical Overpass

With the rapid increase in information density, problems such as signal crosstalk and crossover restrict the further expansion of chip integration levels and packaging density. Based on this, a novel waveguide structure—photonic jumper wire—is proposed here to break through the technical restrictions in waveguide crossing and parallel line wrapping, which hinder the integration of photonic chips. Furthermore, we fabricated the optical overpass to realize a more complex on-chip optical cross-connection. Our method and structure promote a series of practical schemes for improving optical chip integration.

Multi-parameter sensor with high sensitivity based on a long-period fiber grating prepared by a polarization-maintaining fiber

We propose what we believe to be a novel long-period fiber grating (LPFG) based on a polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF) and single-mode fiber. Due to the principal axis of stress, the resonance peak is strongly dependent on the polarization state of the input light. Under different polarization states, the response of the resonance peak to the change of the external environment is different. A single resonance peak can measure several physical quantities without wavelength overlap using polarization multiplexing. The experimental results show that the PMF-LPFG realizes a high sensitivity torsion and bending measurement under different polarization states (-3.27 nm/rad*m and -13.38 nm/m) and can also measure the ambient temperature (84.10 pm/°C). The PMF-LPFG unit has the advantages of small size, high sensitivity, and multi-parameter measurement. The design scheme of the sensor provides a new idea for a multi-parameter sensor.

Long-period fiber grating based on inner microholes in optical fiber

A new, to the best of our knowledge, type of long-period fiber grating based on inner microholes in an optical fiber core is proposed and demonstrated. The device is fabricated by first using a femtosecond laser to write a series of vertical short line structures in the core of a single-mode fiber, followed by discharge of the short line areas with a fusion splicer. Owing to the high temperature generated, the line structure rapidly expands and forms an inner microhole. The device is found to have good high temperature sustainability up to 1000°C, with a sensitivity of approximately 13 pm/°C and its strain and bending sensitivities are approximately -1.57 pm/µɛ and -5.198 dB/m^-1, in the ranges of 0-800 µɛ and 0-0.77 m^-1, respectively. It is expected that the device can contribute to the multi-parameter sensing and detection of high temperature in harsh environments.

Arc-Induced Long-Period Fiber Gratings at INESC TEC. Part I: Fabrication, Characterization and Mechanisms of Formation

In this work, we reviewed the most important achievements of INESC TEC related to the fabrication of long-period fiber gratings using the electric arc technique. We focused on the fabrication setup, the type of fiber used, and the effect of the fabrication parameters on the gratings' transmission spectra. The theory was presented, as well as a discussion on the mechanisms responsible for the formation of the gratings, supported by the measurement of the temperature reached by the fiber during an electric arc discharge.
