Pre-Trained Deep Convolutional Neural Network for Clostridioides Difficile Bacteria Cytotoxicity Classification Based on Fluorescence Images

Deep Learning Based Classification of Dermatological Disorders

Automated medical diagnosis has become crucial and significantly supports medical doctors. Thus, there is a demand for inventing deep learning (DL) and convolutional networks for analyzing medical images. Dermatology, in particular, is one of the domains that was recently targeted by AI specialists to introduce new DL algorithms or enhance convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures. A significantly high proportion of studies in the field are concerned with skin cancer, whereas other dermatological disorders are still limited. In this work, we examined the performance of 6 CNN architectures named VGG16, EfficientNet, InceptionV3, MobileNet, NasNet, and ResNet50 for the top 3 dermatological disorders that frequently appear in the Middle East. An Image filtering and denoising were imposed in this work to enhance image quality and increase architecture performance. Experimental results revealed that MobileNet achieved the highest performance and accuracy among the CNN architectures and can classify disorder with high performance (95.7% accuracy). Future scope will focus more on proposing a new methodology for deep-based classification. In addition, we will expand the dataset for more images that consider new disorders and variations.

A Novel Deep-Learning-Based CADx Architecture for Classification of Thyroid Nodules Using Ultrasound Images

Nodules of thyroid cancer occur in the cells of the thyroid as benign or malign types. Thyroid sonographic images are mostly used for diagnosis of thyroid cancer. The aim of this study is to introduce a computer-aided diagnosis system that can classify the thyroid nodules with high accuracy using the data gathered from ultrasound images. Acquisition and labeling of sub-images were performed by a specialist physician. Then the number of these sub-images were increased using data augmentation methods. Deep features were obtained from the images using a pre-trained deep neural network. The dimensions of the features were reduced and features were improved. The improved features were combined with morphological and texture features. This feature group was rated by a value called similarity coefficient value which was obtained from a similarity coefficient generator module. The nodules were classified as benign or malignant using a multi-layer deep neural network with a pre-weighting layer designed with a novel approach. In this study, a novel multi-layer computer-aided diagnosis system was proposed for thyroid cancer detection. In the first layer of the system, a novel feature extraction method based on the class similarity of images was developed. In the second layer, a novel pre-weighting layer was proposed by modifying the genetic algorithm. The proposed system showed superior performance in different metrics compared to the literature.

A Novel Computer Vision Model for Medicinal Plant Identification Using Log-Gabor Filters and Deep Learning Algorithms

Computer vision is the science that enables computers and machines to see and perceive image content on a semantic level. It combines concepts, techniques, and ideas from various fields such as digital image processing, pattern matching, artificial intelligence, and computer graphics. A computer vision system is designed to model the human visual system on a functional basis as closely as possible. Deep learning and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) in particular which are biologically inspired have significantly contributed to computer vision studies. This research develops a computer vision system that uses CNNs and handcrafted filters from Log-Gabor filters to identify medicinal plants based on their leaf textural features in an ensemble manner. The system was tested on a dataset developed from the Centre of Plant Medicine Research, Ghana (MyDataset) consisting of forty-nine (49) plant species. Using the concept of transfer learning, ten pretrained networks including Alexnet, GoogLeNet, DenseNet201, Inceptionv3, Mobilenetv2, Restnet18, Resnet50, Resnet101, vgg16, and vgg19 were used as feature extractors. The DenseNet201 architecture resulted with the best outcome of 87% accuracy and GoogLeNet with 79% preforming the worse averaged across six supervised learning algorithms. The proposed model (OTAMNet), created by fusing a Log-Gabor layer into the transition layers of the DenseNet201 architecture achieved 98% accuracy when tested on MyDataset. OTAMNet was tested on other benchmark datasets; Flavia, Swedish Leaf, MD2020, and the Folio dataset. The Flavia dataset achieved 99%, Swedish Leaf 100%, MD2020 99%, and the Folio dataset 97%. A false-positive rate of less than 0.1% was achieved in all cases.

Method for Diagnosis of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Based on ViT-CNN Ensemble Model

Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is a deadly cancer that not only affects adults but also accounts for about 25% of childhood cancers. Timely and accurate diagnosis of the cancer is an important premise for effective treatment to improve survival rate. Since the image of leukemic B-lymphoblast cells (cancer cells) under the microscope is very similar in morphology to that of normal B-lymphoid precursors (normal cells), it is difficult to distinguish between cancer cells and normal cells. Therefore, we propose the ViT-CNN ensemble model to classify cancer cells images and normal cells images to assist in the diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The ViT-CNN ensemble model is an ensemble model that combines the vision transformer model and convolutional neural network (CNN) model. The vision transformer model is an image classification model based entirely on the transformer structure, which has completely different feature extraction method from the CNN model. The ViT-CNN ensemble model can extract the features of cells images in two completely different ways to achieve better classification results. In addition, the data set used in this article is an unbalanced data set and has a certain amount of noise, and we propose a difference enhancement-random sampling (DERS) data enhancement method, create a new balanced data set, and use the symmetric cross-entropy loss function to reduce the impact of noise in the data set. The classification accuracy of the ViT-CNN ensemble model on the test set has reached 99.03%, and it is proved through experimental comparison that the effect is better than other models. The proposed method can accurately distinguish between cancer cells and normal cells and can be used as an effective method for computer-aided diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

The Application of Cameras in Precision Pig Farming: An Overview for Swine-Keeping Professionals

The preeminent purpose of precision livestock farming (PLF) is to provide affordable and straightforward solutions to severe problems with certainty. Some data collection techniques in PLF such as RFID are accurate but not affordable for small- and medium-sized farms. On the other hand, camera sensors are cheap, commonly available, and easily used to collect information compared to other sensor systems in precision pig farming. Cameras have ample chance to monitor pigs with high precision at an affordable cost. However, the lack of targeted information about the application of cameras in the pig industry is a shortcoming for swine farmers and researchers. This review describes the state of the art in 3D imaging systems (i.e., depth sensors and time-of-flight cameras), along with 2D cameras, for effectively identifying pig behaviors, and presents automated approaches for monitoring and investigating pigs’ feeding, drinking, lying, locomotion, aggressive, and reproductive behaviors. In addition, the review summarizes the related literature and points out limitations to open up new dimensions for future researchers to explore.

Abstract

Pork is the meat with the second-largest overall consumption, and chicken, pork, and beef together account for 92% of global meat production. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt more progressive methodologies such as precision livestock farming (PLF) rather than conventional methods to improve production.
