User Orientation Detection in Relation to Antenna Geometry in Ultra-Wideband Wireless Body Area Networks Using Deep Learning

In this paper, the issue of detecting a user's position in relation to the antenna geometry in ultra-wideband (UWB) off-body wireless body area network (WBAN) communication using deep learning methods is presented. To measure the impulse response of the channel, a measurement stand consisting of EVB1000 devices and DW1000 radio modules was developed and indoor static measurement scenarios were performed. It was proven that for the binary classification of user orientation, neural networks achieved accuracy that was more than 9% higher than that for the well-known threshold method. In addition, the classification of user position angles relative to the reference node was analyzed. It was proven that, using the proposed deep learning approach and the channel impulse response, it was possible to estimate the angle of the user's position in relation to the antenna geometry. Absolute user orientation angle errors of about 4-7° for convolutional neural networks and of about 14-15° for multilayer perceptrons were achieved in approximately 85% of the cases in both tested scenarios.

AAL and Internet of Medical Things for Monitoring Type-2 Diabetic Patients

Due to an aging population, assisted-care options are required so that senior citizens may maintain their independence at home for a longer time and rely less on caretakers. Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) encourages the creation of solutions that can help to optimize the environment for senior citizens with assistance while greatly reducing their challenges. A framework based on the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) is used in the current study for the implementation of AAL technology to help patients with Type-2 diabetes. A glucose oxide sensor is used to monitor diabetic elderly people continuously. Spectrogram images are created from the recorded data from the sensor to assess and detect aberrant glucose levels. DenseNet-169 examines and analyzes the spectrogram pictures, and messages are sent to caregivers when aberrant glucose levels are detected. The current work describes both the spectrogram image analysis and the signal-to-spectrogram generating method. The study presents a future perspective model for a mobile application for real-time patient monitoring. Benchmark metrics evaluate the application's performances, including sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and F1-score. Several cross--validations are used to evaluate the model's performance. The findings demonstrate that the proposed model can correctly identify patients with abnormal blood glucose levels.

OPERAnet, a multimodal activity recognition dataset acquired from radio frequency and vision-based sensors

This paper presents a comprehensive dataset intended to evaluate passive Human Activity Recognition (HAR) and localization techniques with measurements obtained from synchronized Radio-Frequency (RF) devices and vision-based sensors. The dataset consists of RF data including Channel State Information (CSI) extracted from a WiFi Network Interface Card (NIC), Passive WiFi Radar (PWR) built upon a Software Defined Radio (SDR) platform, and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) signals acquired via commercial off-the-shelf hardware. It also consists of vision/Infra-red based data acquired from Kinect sensors. Approximately 8 hours of annotated measurements are provided, which are collected across two rooms from 6 participants performing 6 daily activities. This dataset can be exploited to advance WiFi and vision-based HAR, for example, using pattern recognition, skeletal representation, deep learning algorithms or other novel approaches to accurately recognize human activities. Furthermore, it can potentially be used to passively track a human in an indoor environment. Such datasets are key tools required for the development of new algorithms and methods in the context of smart homes, elderly care, and surveillance applications.

User-Centric Proximity Estimation Using Smartphone Radio Fingerprinting

The integration of infectious disease modeling with the data collection process is crucial to reach its maximum potential, and remains a significant research challenge. Ensuring a solid empirical foundation for models used to fill gaps in data and knowledge is of paramount importance. Personal wireless devices, such as smartphones, smartwatches and wireless bracelets, can serve as a means of bridging the gap between empirical data and the mathematical modeling of human contacts and networking. In this paper, we develop, implement, and evaluate concepts and architectures for advanced user-centric proximity estimation based on smartphone radio environment monitoring. We investigate innovative methods for the estimation of proximity, based on a person-radio-environment trace recorded by the smartphone, and define the proximity parameter. For this purpose, we developed a smartphone application and back-end services. The results show that, with the proposed procedure, we can estimate the proximity of two devices in terms of near, medium, and far distance with reasonable accuracy in real-world case scenarios.
