The Heterostructures of CuO and SnOx for NO2 Detection

CdSe/ZnS quantum dots as a booster in the active layer of distributed ternary organic photovoltaics

Organic solar cells are a promising candidate for practical use because of their low material cost and simple production procedures. The challenge is selecting materials with the right properties and how they interrelate in the context of manufacturing the device. This paper presents studies on CdSe/ZnS nanodots as dopants in a polymer-fullerene matrix for application in organic solar cells. An assembly of poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) and 6,6-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester was used as the active reference layer. Absorption and luminescence spectra as well as the dispersion relations of refractive indices and extinction coefficient were investigated. The morphologies of the thin films were studied with atomic force microscopy. The chemical boundaries of the ternary layers were determined by Raman spectroscopy. Based on UPS studies, the energy diagram of the potential devices was determined. The resistivity of the layers was determined using impedance spectroscopy. Simulations (General-Purpose Photovoltaic Device Model) showed a performance improvement in the cells with quantum dots of 0.36-1.45% compared to those without quantum dots.

Catalytic Systems in the Reduction of Nitrogen Oxide Emissions in Diesel-Powered Trucks

In recent years, the number of motor vehicles in circulation has increased in proportion to Brazil’s economic growth, resulting in an increase in emissions of toxic gases from combustion, such as nitrogen oxide, particulate matter, carbon dioxide and volatile organic compounds, among other polluting compounds. This type of pollution has its impacts potentiated in large cities, accumulating due to the configuration of streets and buildings in large urban centers, and can even penetrate indoor environments, having harmful effects on the health of residents. To minimize the emission of these gases, catalytic converters can be used in the vehicle exhausts. Catalytic converters are a promising technology used to reduce exhaust emissions from the engine. In this context, this paper presents an overview of the emission of toxic gases by heavy transport powered by diesel oil and the influence of the use of automotive catalysts in reducing the emission of toxic gases. Additionally, a proposal for monitoring the useful life of automotive catalysts is presented through an electronic sensing system, which makes it possible to determine the catalyst efficiency and the appropriate point for its reactivation or replacement.

Developing GLAD Parameters to Control the Deposition of Nanostructured Thin Film

In this paper, we describe the device developed to control the deposition parameters to manage the glancing angle deposition (GLAD) process of metal-oxide thin films for gas-sensing applications. The GLAD technique is based on a set of parameters such as the tilt, rotation, and substrate temperature. All parameters are crucial to control the deposition of nanostructured thin films. Therefore, the developed GLAD controller enables the control of all parameters by the scientist during the deposition. Additionally, commercially available vacuum components were used, including a three-axis manipulator. High-precision readings were tested, where the relative errors calculated using the parameters provided by the manufacturer were 1.5% and 1.9% for left and right directions, respectively. However, thanks to the formula developed by our team, the values were decreased to 0.8% and 0.69%, respectively.
