Vehicle State Estimation Using Interacting Multiple Model Based on Square Root Cubature Kalman Filter

The distributed drive arrangement form has better potential for cooperative control of dynamics, but this drive arrangement form increases the parameter acquisition workload of the control system and increases the difficulty of vehicle control accordingly. In order to observe the vehicle motion state accurately and in real-time, while reducing the effect of uncertainty in noise statistical information, the vehicle state observer is designed based on interacting multiple model theory with square root cubature Kalman filter (IMM-SCKF). The IMM-SCKF algorithm sub-model considers different state noise and measurement noise, and the introduction of the square root filter reduces the complexity of the algorithm while ensuring accuracy and real-time performance. To estimate the vehicle longitudinal, lateral, and yaw motion states, the algorithm uses a three degree of freedom (3-DOF) vehicle dynamics model and a nonlinear brush tire model, which is then validated in a Carsim-Simulink co-simulation platform for multiple operating conditions. The results show that the IMM-SCKF algorithm’s fusion output results can effectively follow the sub-model with smaller output errors, and that the IMM-SCKF algorithm’s results are superior to the traditional SCKF algorithm’s results.

Advanced Controller Development Based on eFMI with Applications to Automotive Vertical Dynamics Control

High-level modeling languages facilitate system modeling and the development of control systems. This is mainly achieved by the automated handling of differential algebraic equations which describe the dynamics of the modeled systems across different physical domains. A wide selection of model libraries provides additional support to the modeling process. Nevertheless, deployment on embedded targets poses a challenge and usually requires manual modification and reimplementation of the control system. The novel proposed eFMI Standard (Functional Mock-up Interface for embedded systems) introduces a workflow and an automated toolchain to simplify the deployment of model-based control systems on embedded targets. This contribution describes the application and verification of the eFMI workflow using a vertical dynamics control problem with an automotive application as an example. The workflow is exemplified by a control system design process which is supported by the a-causal, multi-physical, high-level modeling language Modelica. In this process, the eFMI toolchain is applied to a model-based controller for semi-active dampers and demonstrated using an eFMI-based nonlinear prediction model within a nonlinear Kalman filter. The generated code was successfully tested in different validation steps on the dedicated embedded system. Additionally, tests with a low-volume production electronic control unit (ECU) in a series-produced car demonstrated the correct execution of the controller code under real-world conditions. The novelty of our approach is that it automatically derives an embedded software solution from a high-level multi-physical model with standardized eFMI methodology and tooling. We present one of the first full application scenarios (covering all aspects ranging from multi-physical modeling up to embedded target deployment) of the new eFMI tooling.

Sensor Selection and State Estimation for Unobservable and Non-Linear System Models

To comply with the increasing complexity of new mechatronic systems and stricter safety regulations, advanced estimation algorithms are currently undergoing a transformation towards higher model complexity. However, more complex models often face issues regarding the observability and computational effort needed. Moreover, sensor selection is often still conducted pragmatically based on experience and convenience, whereas a more cost-effective approach would be to evaluate the sensor performance based on its effective estimation performance. In this work, a novel estimation and sensor selection approach is presented that is able to stabilise the estimator Riccati equation for unobservable and non-linear system models. This is possible when estimators only target some specific quantities of interest that do not necessarily depend on all system states. An Extended Kalman Filter-based estimation framework is proposed where the Riccati equation is projected onto an observable subspace based on a Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) of the Kalman observability matrix. Furthermore, a sensor selection methodology is proposed, which ranks the possible sensors according to their estimation performance, as evaluated by the error covariance of the quantities of interest. This allows evaluating the performance of a sensor set without the need for costly test campaigns. Finally, the proposed methods are evaluated on a numerical example, as well as an automotive experimental validation case.

Adaptive Unscented Kalman Filter for Target Tacking with Time-Varying Noise Covariance Based on Multi-Sensor Information Fusion

In this paper, an innovative optimal information fusion methodology based on adaptive and robust unscented Kalman filter (UKF) for multi-sensor nonlinear stochastic systems is proposed. Based on the linear minimum variance criterion, this multi-sensor information fusion method has a two-layer architecture: at the first layer, a new adaptive UKF scheme for the time-varying noise covariance is developed and serves as a local filter to improve the adaptability together with the estimated measurement noise covariance by applying the redundant measurement noise covariance estimation, which is isolated from the state estimation; the second layer is the fusion structure to calculate the optimal matrix weights and gives the final optimal state estimations. Based on the hypothesis testing theory with the Mahalanobis distance, the new adaptive UKF scheme utilizes both the innovation and the residual sequences to adapt the process noise covariance timely. The results of the target tracking simulations indicate that the proposed method is effective under the condition of time-varying process-error and measurement noise covariance.
