Real-Time Environmental Monitoring for Aquaculture Using a LoRaWAN-Based IoT Sensor Network

Optimal Distributed Finite-Time Fusion Method for Multi-Sensor Networks under Dynamic Communication Weight

Aiming at the problem of distributed state estimation in sensor networks, a novel optimal distributed finite-time fusion filtering method based on dynamic communication weights has been developed. To tackle the fusion errors caused by incomplete node information in distributed sensor networks, the concept of limited iterations of global information aggregation was introduced, namely, fast finite-time convergence techniques. Firstly, a local filtering algorithm architecture was constructed to achieve fusion error convergence within a limited number of iterations. The maximum number of iterations was derived to be the diameter of the communication topology graph in the sensor network. Based on this, the matrix weight fusion was used to combine the local filtering results, thereby achieving optimal estimation in terms of minimum variance. Next, by introducing the generalized information quality (GIQ) calculation method and associating it with the local fusion result bias, the relative communication weights were obtained and embedded in the fusion algorithm. Finally, the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed algorithm were validated through numerical simulations and experimental tests.

Mobility of LoRaWAN Gateways for Efficient Environmental Monitoring in Pristine Sites

Environmental monitoring of delicate ecosystems or pristine sites is critical to their preservation. The communication infrastructure for such monitoring should have as little impact on the natural ecosystem as possible. Because of their wide range capabilities and independence from heavy infrastructure, low-power wide area network protocols have recently been used in remote monitoring. In this regard, we propose a mobile vehicle-mounted gateway architecture for IoT data collection in communication-network-free areas. The limits of reliable communication are investigated in terms of gateway speed, throughput, and energy consumption. We investigate the performance of various gateway arrival scenarios, focusing on the trade-off between freshness of data, data collection rate, and end-node power consumption. Then we validate our findings using both real-world experiments and simulations. In addition, we present a case study exploiting the proposed architecture to provide coverage for Wadi El-Gemal national park in Egypt. The results show that reliable communication is achieved over all spreading factors (SFs) for gateway speeds up to 150 km/h with negligible performance degradation at SFs=11,12 at speeds more than 100 km/h. The synchronized transmission model ensures the best performance in terms of throughput and power consumption at the expense of the freshness of data. Nonsynchronized transmission allows time-flexible data collection at the expense of increased power consumption. The same throughput as semisynchronized transmission is achieved using four gateways at only five times the energy consumption, while a single gateway requires seventeen times the amount of energy. Furthermore, increasing the number of gateways to ten increases the throughput to the level achieved by the synchronized scenario while consuming eight times the energy.

Towards making the fields talks: A real-time cloud enabled IoT crop management platform for smart agriculture

Agriculture is the primary and oldest industry in the world and has been transformed over the centuries from the prehistoric era to the technology-driven 21^st century, where people are always solving complex problems with the aid of technology. With the power of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), the world has become a global village, where every digital object that prevails in the world is connected to each other with the Internet of Things (IoT). The fast proliferation of IoT-based technology has revolutionized practically every sector, including agriculture, shifting the industry from statistical to quantitative techniques. Such profound transformations are reshaping traditional agricultural practices and generating new possibilities in the face of various challenges. With the opportunities created, farmers are now able to monitor the condition of crops in real time. With the automated IoT solutions, farmers can automate tasks in the farmland, as these solutions are capable of making precise decisions based on underlying challenges and executing actions to overcome such difficulties, alerting farmers in real-time, eventually leading to increased productivity and higher harvest. In this context, we present a cloud-enabled low-cost sensorized IoT platform for real-time monitoring and automating tasks dealing with a tomato plantation in an indoor environment, highlighting the necessity of smart agriculture. We anticipate that the findings of this study will serve as vital guides in developing and promoting smart agriculture solutions aimed at improving productivity and quality while also enabling the transition to a sustainable environment.

CEBA: A Data Lake for Data Sharing and Environmental Monitoring

This article presents a platform for environmental data named “Environmental Cloud for the Benefit of Agriculture” (CEBA). The CEBA should fill the gap of a regional institutional platform to share, search, store and visualize heterogeneous scientific data related to the environment and agricultural researches. One of the main features of this tool is its ease of use and the accessibility of all types of data. To answer the question of data description, a scientific consensus has been established around the qualification of data with at least the information “when” (time), “where” (geographical coordinates) and “what” (metadata). The development of an on-premise solution using the data lake concept to provide a cloud service for end-users with institutional authentication and for open data access has been completed. Compared to other platforms, CEBA fully supports the management of geographic coordinates at every stage of data management. A comprehensive JavaScript Objet Notation (JSON) architecture has been designed, among other things, to facilitate multi-stage data enrichment. Data from the wireless network are queried and accessed in near real-time, using a distributed JSON-based search engine.
