Advancing Diabetes Management: The Future of Enzyme-Less Nanoparticle-Based Glucose Sensors-A Review

BACKGROUND

Glucose is vital for biological processes, requiring blood sugar levels to be maintained between 3.88 and 6.1 mmol/L, especially during fasting. Elevated levels signal diabetes, a global concern affecting 537 million people, necessitating effective glucose-monitoring devices.

METHOD

Enzyme-based sensors, though selective, are sensitive to environmental factors. Nonenzymatic sensors, especially those with nanoparticles, offer stability, high surface area, and cost-effectiveness. Existing literature supports their immediate glucose oxidation, showcasing exceptional sensitivity.

RESULTS

This review details nonenzymatic sensors, highlighting materials, detection limits, and the promise of nanoparticle-based designs, which exhibit enhanced sensitivity and selectivity in glucose detection.

CONCLUSION

Nanoparticle-based sensors, as reviewed, show potential for glucose monitoring, overcoming enzyme-based limitations. The conclusion suggests future directions for advancing these sensors, emphasizing ongoing innovation in this critical research area.

Convolutional neural network-based sea lion optimization algorithm for the detection and classification of diabetic retinopathy

AIMS

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) becomes a complicated type of diabetic that causes damage to the blood vessels of the retina's light-sensitive tissue. DR may initially cause mild symptoms or no symptoms. But prolonged DR results in permanent vision loss, and hence, it is necessary to detect the DR at an early stage.

METHODS

Manual diagnosing of DR retina fundus image is a time-consuming process and sometimes leads to misdiagnosis. The existing DR detection model faces few shortcomings in case of improper detection accuracy, higher loss or error values, high feature dimensionality, not suitable for large datasets, high computational complexity, poor performances, unbalanced and limited number of data points, and so on. As a result, the DR is diagnosed in this paper through four critical phases to tackle the shortcomings. The retinal images are cropped during preprocessing to reduce unwanted noises and redundant data. The images are then segmented using a modified level set algorithm based on pixel characteristics.

RESULTS

Here, an Aquila optimizer is employed in extracting the segmented image. Finally, for optimal classification of DR images, the study proposes a convolutional neural network-oriented sea lion optimization (CNN-SLO) algorithm. Here, the CNN-SLO algorithm classifies the retinal images into five classes (healthy, moderate, mild, proliferative and severe).

CONCLUSION

The experimental investigation is performed for Kaggle datasets with respect to diverse evaluation measures to deliberate the performances of the proposed system.

Rule extraction from biased random forest and fuzzy support vector machine for early diagnosis of diabetes

Due to concealed initial symptoms, many diabetic patients are not diagnosed in time, which delays treatment. Machine learning methods have been applied to increase the diagnosis rate, but most of them are black boxes lacking interpretability. Rule extraction is usually used to turn on the black box. As the number of diabetic patients is far less than that of healthy people, the rules obtained by the existing rule extraction methods tend to identify healthy people rather than diabetic patients. To address the problem, a method for extracting reduced rules based on biased random forest and fuzzy support vector machine is proposed. Biased random forest uses the k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) algorithm to identify critical samples and generates more trees that tend to diagnose diabetes based on critical samples to improve the tendency of the generated rules for diabetic patients. In addition, the conditions and rules are reduced based on the error rate and coverage rate to enhance interpretability. Experiments on the Diabetes Medical Examination Data collected by Beijing Hospital (DMED-BH) dataset demonstrate that the proposed approach has outstanding results (MCC = 0.8802) when the rules are similar in number. Moreover, experiments on the Pima Indian Diabetes (PID) and China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) datasets prove the generalization of the proposed method.
