A systematic review on the impact of artificial intelligence on electrocardiograms in cardiology

BACKGROUND

Artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized numerous industries, enhancing efficiency, scalability, and insight generation. In cardiology, particularly through electrocardiogram (ECG) analysis, AI has the potential to improve diagnostic accuracy and reduce the time needed for diagnosis. This systematic review explores the integration of AI, machine learning (ML), and deep learning (DL) in ECG analysis, focusing on their impact on predictive diagnostics and treatment support in cardiology.

METHODS

A systematic literature review was conducted following the PRISMA 2020 framework, using four high-impact databases to identify studies from 2014 to -2024. The inclusion criteria included English-language journal articles and research papers that focused on AI applications in cardiology, specifically ECG analysis. Records were screened, duplicates were removed, and final selections were made on the basis of their relevance to AI-ECG integration for cardiac health.

RESULTS

The review included 46 studies that met the inclusion criteria, covering diverse AI models such as CNNs, RNNs, and hybrid models. These models were applied to ECG data to detect and predict heart conditions such as arrhythmia, myocardial infarction, and heart failure. These findings indicate that AI-driven ECG analysis improves diagnostic accuracy and provides significant support for early diagnosis and personalized treatment.

CONCLUSIONS

AI technologies, especially ML and DL, enhance ECG-based cardiology diagnostics by increasing accuracy, reducing diagnosis time, and supporting timely interventions and personalized care. Continued research in this area is essential to refine algorithms and integrate AI tools into clinical practice for improved patient outcomes in cardiology.

ECG-based data-driven solutions for diagnosis and prognosis of cardiovascular diseases: A systematic review

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a leading cause of death globally, and result in significant morbidity and reduced quality of life. The electrocardiogram (ECG) plays a crucial role in CVD diagnosis, prognosis, and prevention; however, different challenges still remain, such as an increasing unmet demand for skilled cardiologists capable of accurately interpreting ECG. This leads to higher workload and potential diagnostic inaccuracies. Data-driven approaches, such as machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) have emerged to improve existing computer-assisted solutions and enhance physicians' ECG interpretation of the complex mechanisms underlying CVD. However, many ML and DL models used to detect ECG-based CVD suffer from a lack of explainability, bias, as well as ethical, legal, and societal implications (ELSI). Despite the critical importance of these Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence (AI) aspects, there is a lack of comprehensive literature reviews that examine the current trends in ECG-based solutions for CVD diagnosis or prognosis that use ML and DL models and address the Trustworthy AI requirements. This review aims to bridge this knowledge gap by providing a systematic review to undertake a holistic analysis across multiple dimensions of these data-driven models such as type of CVD addressed, dataset characteristics, data input modalities, ML and DL algorithms (with a focus on DL), and aspects of Trustworthy AI like explainability, bias and ethical considerations. Additionally, within the analyzed dimensions, various challenges are identified. To these, we provide concrete recommendations, equipping other researchers with valuable insights to understand the current state of the field comprehensively.

From Data to Diagnosis: How Machine Learning Is Changing Heart Health Monitoring

The rapid advances in science and technology in the field of artificial neural networks have led to noticeable interest in the application of this technology in medicine. Given the need to develop medical sensors that monitor vital signs to meet both people's needs in real life and in clinical research, the use of computer-based techniques should be considered. This paper describes the latest progress in heart rate sensors empowered by machine learning methods. The paper is based on a review of the literature and patents from recent years, and is reported according to the PRISMA 2020 statement. The most important challenges and prospects in this field are presented. Key applications of machine learning are discussed in medical sensors used for medical diagnostics in the area of data collection, processing, and interpretation of results. Although current solutions are not yet able to operate independently, especially in the diagnostic context, it is likely that medical sensors will be further developed using advanced artificial intelligence methods.
